Emirates Airbus A380

The Emirates airline has three daily services between Dubai and Manchester and has been using an Airbus A380 for one of these since 2010. In February this year the Boeing 777 on the evening flight was also replaced by an Airbus A380. Here are some photographs of the evening flight passing over Hyde just before 7.30pm on 14th April 2015.
It's Emirates flight EK19 from Dubai

An Airbus A380-861

The registration number is A6-EDU

Aircraft land at Manchester Airport about 3 minutes after passing over our house

Fordson E83W

This is a photograph I took at Heaton Park, Manchester, in September 1995 at the Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally organised by the Greater Manchester Transport Society, and once again it's one that isn't included in the list of vehicles shown in the programme of the event.
It's a 1953 Fordson E83W 10cwt van, powered by the 1172cc engine which it shared with the smaller models in the Ford car range produced at that time.

Renault 8 Gordini

When I was much younger, probably in the late 1950s, one of the cars I coveted was the little-known Gordini-tuned Renault Dauphine. The photograph below shows its successor, the Renault 8 Gordini, produced between 1964 and 1970.
The photograph was taken at the Renault Owners Club stand at the G-Mex Exhibition Centre, Manchester, at the Northern Classic Car Show in August 1994.

Rolls Royce 20hp

In May 1987 the starting point of the Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run was the Exchange Station car park in Manchester. This photograph shows one of the entrants before the start of the run, a 1928 Rolls Royce 20hp Barker Limousine.
The only information about the car given in the programme of the event is this:

135     1928 Rolls Royce Barker Limousine
           Reg: XV 8026 6 cylinder 20 hp
           (Gerald Morris, Bury, Lancashire)

Behind the car and to the right you can see the ventilation tower of Strangeways Prison.

Teddy

About three weeks ago I was walking home from Hyde town centre up Henry Street when I spotted this at the compound at the corner of Henry Street and Syddall Street:
I didn't know if Ted was trying to climb in or out of the compound......

......but a few days later I walked past again and found this:
So it looks as if he was climbing in and looks quite happy now relaxing in his new home.

Lancia D24

This car contested the Champagne Charles Heidsieck Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993,
It's a 1953 Lancia D24 which was driven in the race by Peter Groh. I can't find out anything about this particular car but it seems that this is one of the four replicas built in the 1980s.
This is what the programme of the event said about the car:
'Enthusiasts will also welcome the appearance of a Lancia D24 for the first time in a British race since the 1954 Tourist Trophy. It was beaten by Ferrari in that race, but succeeded in winning the Mille Miglia, the Carrera Panamericana and other big races. Today's entry is in the hands of Peter Groh who, like Thomas Bscher, is one of the growing band of German historic car collectors/racers.'

Friday's Ferrari

Here are a a couple of photographs I took at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in 1971.
I've featured this car before (on 11 May 2012) at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting in 1970. It's designated as a 1957 Ferrari 625 GP Monoposto, serial number 0712, which was built for New Zealander Pat Hoare and you can read something about the car and see more photographs of it here.
Not a very good photograph, but it shows the car on the Hill Top straight leading to Knickerbrook corner. I don't have the programme of the event, but the owner of the car at that time was Nigel Moores (of the Littlewoods Pools family), so he's probably driving it here.

Atlantique Air Assistance

This is Atlantique Air Assistance flight TLB332 passing over our house in the afternoon of 11th April 2015 on its way to landing at Manchester Airport. It's a Beech 1900C, registration number F-GPYY, one of five aircraft operated by Atlantique Air Assistance and had come from Poitiers.

Allard JR

The Donington International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004 organised by the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association included a Gentleman Drivers GT and Sports Endurance race lasting 2¼ hours. The car pictured below is one of those taking part in this race.
It's a 1953 Allard JR and the co-drivers in the race were Martin Walford and Michael Windsor Price. Sydney Allard drove an Allard JR at the 1953 Le Mans 24 hour race and actually led on the first lap of the race, but had to retire on lap 4 with a collapsed rear suspension. The JR and J2R were the final evolution of the J2 and a total of 10 models were built. It appears that arrangements were made recently to start manufacturing continuation models.

Three Aeroplanes

Photographs I took on 8 April 2015 of three aeroplanes passing over the house when coming in to land at Manchester Airport.
At 2.46pm this is Thomas Cook Airlines flight TCX59GJ from Venice to Manchester. It's an Airbus A321-211 and the registration number is G-TCDK.

At 3.05pm this is Aer Lingus flight EI208 from Dublin to Manchester. It's an Airbus A320-214 and the registration number is EI-EDS.

At 3.11pm this is Etihad Airways flight EY21 from Abu Dhabi to Manchester, It's a Boeing 777-3FX(ER) and the registration number is A6-ETI.

Cooper T59

This car competed in the Historic Grand Prix Car Association race at the VSCC Boulogne and Hawthorn Trophies Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.
It's the 1963 Cooper T59 driven on that day by Tony Bailey and previously campaigned by Patsy Burt, possibly the most successful British female racing driver this country has seen. You can read about her racing career in this Wikipedia article.

Bristol L6A

This is a photograph taken in Heaton Park, Manchester, in September 1998 at the Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally organised by the Greater Manchester Transport Society.
It's not shown in the programme of the event, but it's a 1948 Bristol L6A with a Beadle C31F body, originally in service with the Western National Omnibus Company of Exeter and you can read its history here.

Chrysler Wimbledon

This is one of the cars on display at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Centre, Manchester in August 1989.
It's a 1935 Chrysler Wimbledon Sedan and as far as I can make out from the brochure of the event the 'SMTMS' logo on the stand appears to relate to the Stockport Motor Transport Museum Society, though I can't find out anything about this club. The car recently appeared in a Barons auction and you can read here what they had to say about this car.

Friday's Ferrari

Here's a Ferrari photographed in the pit garage at the VSCC Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Donington Park in June 2003 which isn't exactly what it appears to be.
It looks like a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC but it actually started off life as a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTE, being rebuilt in it's present form in the early 1980s and the serial number is 4873GT. The car has belonged to Stuart Anderson since 1997 and you can read something of the history of the car here on his website. Have a look down the list of contents on the website as well - I found it most interesting and informative.

Ecurie Ecosse Transporter

In the paddock at Silverstone in July 2010 at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting was the Ecurie Ecosse Commer transporter which was used to carry the team's cars around for over 10 years from 1960. Here it's got one of the team's Jaguar D-types and the 1961 Le Mans Austin Healey Sprite on top, and there was room for a further car inside.
The transporter was later sold to Neil Corner and I remember seeing it several times bearing his name in the paddock at Oulton Park. I've featured the transporter previously in October 2013 with a photograph I took at Silverstone in 1995.

Austin Healey 3000

This car took part in the AMOC Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship Race at the Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club at Oulton Park in April 1987.
It's a 1959 Austin Healey 3000, entered by Denis Welch Swish Healey Racing Team and driven in the race by Denis Welch. You can read about the history of this particular car here.

Frazer Nash BMW 328

This car competed in one of the Scratch Races at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy Meeting organised by the VSCC at Donington Park in June 2003. It's a 1939 Frazer Nash BMW, and the programme of the event says this about the car:
'Alastair Pugh's 328 BMW (93) is a car that changed the way sports cars would be made with its 6-cylinder 2 litre engine, tubular frame and independent front suspension.'

The Frazer Nash company, AFN Ltd, started to import and assemble BMW cars in 1934 and sold them under the name of Frazer Nash-BMW. You can read about the BMW 328 here.

Jaguar E-type

This is another of those old Kodak Brownie 127 photographs taken at Aintree, but I don't know in this instance at which meeting it was taken - it's probably the BARC 200 meeting in 1961, but could have been the 1962 event.
It's a 1961 Jaguar E-type, and it's the one in which Graham Hill won on the car's first outing, at Oulton Park in April 1961. I don't think it actually competed at this Aintree event.

Morris Series Z Van

This is another of the vehicles I photographed in the Pallot Museum in Jersey when we visited in May 2013.
It's a 1940s Morris Series Z van, derived from the Morris 8 car, and I remember that many of these vehicles saw service in the Royal Mail and Post Office Telephone fleets.

Star

This photograph was taken in June 1993 at the Village Hotel in Cheadle prior to the start of the annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run organised by the Lancashire Automobile Club.
The programme of the event in 1993, as with the previous year or two, was very sparse, containing only a list of the cars entered in the run together with their owners - whereas previously little snippets of information about many of the cars had been included. This car, however, wasn't even listed in the programme and the only thing I knew about it was that it was a Star. But I've found photographs and details of this particular car on the site of the Star Register, so I now know that it's a 1909 Star 4-cylinder model with a 12hp engine, and the owner is a P.Whitty.

Friday's Ferrari

This car was in the Ferrari Owners Club area at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
It's a 1968 Ferrari 365 GTC. This was a car which replaced the 330 GTC, having a 4.4 litre engine instead of the 4 litre engine of the 330 GTC, and was itself replaced by the 365 GTC/4 in 1970. The serial number of this car is 11333.

Cadillac Eldorado Seville

The Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally organised by the Greater Manchester Transport Society always included a class for American cars, and here's one at Heaton Park, Manchester in August 1993.
Although it's not shown in the programme of the event, it's a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Seville Third Generation.

Wednesday, 8 April 2015

De Tomaso Pantera

I photographed this car on the stand of the De Tomaso Drivers Club in the G-Mex Exhibition Centre in Manchester at the Northern Classic Car Show in August 1991.
It's a 1980 De Tomaso Pantera. Alejandro de Tomaso started by building a Formula One car which appeared sporadically from 1961 to 1963, and after an unsuccessful attempt to re-enter racing in conjunction with Frank Williams in 1970 he gave up Formula One to concentrate on the road-going models which he had started to manufacture in 1963. The Pantera replaced the Mangusta and was produced from 1971 till 1992.

Bentley EXP Speed 8

The Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in 2003 took place just a couple of months after the Le Mans 24 Hour race had been won by Bentley. On display in the Oulton Park paddock that day was the car pictured below.
It's the Bentley EXP Speed 8 that finished in 4th place at Le Mans the previous year and the names of the drivers of the car that day are displayed on the door of the car: Andy Wallace, Butch Leitzinger and Eric van der Poele.

Lotus Elise GT1

In the paddock at Silverstone at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting in July 1999 was the car shown below.
It's a 1997 Lotus Elise GT1 (Hydro) and was driven in the 1997 FIA GT Championship by Andrea Boldrini and Mauro Martini for GBF UK Ltd.

Bentley 3 litre

I photographed this car in the paddock at the VSCC SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in June 2008 where it took part in the  1 hour long Motor Racing Legends Pre-war Sports Car race.
Because it's not got the usual hallmark radiator casing it's not instantly recognisable, but it's a 1922 Bentley 3 litre. It's described in the programme of the event as a Bentley TT 3 litre, the 1922 TT in the Isle of Man being the first serious race in which Bentley took part, entering a team of 3 cars. It seems that this car wasn't one of the cars which took part in that race, but a replica of those cars. It was driven in the Donington Park race by Richard and Andrew Frankel.

Chevrolet Truck

A few weeks ago I showed a photograph of a 1962 Chrysler 300H which our son David had seen close to where he works in New Jersey, and here's another photograph he's sent to me which he took on another occasion at the same place.
It's a Chevrolet Truck from the late 1950s, possibly a 1958 Apache.

Friday's Ferrari

In August 1996 during a holiday in Scotland we visited the Doune Motor Museum near Stirling, and here's one of the cars that was on display in the museum.
It's a 1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona, but there's no other information about it in the brochure of the museum and I can't find out anything else about this particular car.

Cooper BRM

This car took part in the HSCC Classic Racing Cars Championship race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2002. The race included cars in six different classes and this car was in Class E2 (single seater racing cars built and raced between 1.1.66 and 31.12.70 up to 1600cc, 2 valves per cylinder).
It's a 1966 Cooper T82 with a 1-litre BRM engine which was built to compete in the 1966 European Formula 2 Championship. Here it's being prepared in the paddock prior to the start of racing......
......and here's what it looks like when it's been put back together again. It was driven in the race that day by Paul Busby of Melton Mowbray.

Lagonda 3 litre Tourer

This is a photograph taken on the Exchange Station car park in Manchester in May 1992 at the start of the Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run organised by the Lancashire Automobile Club.
It's a 1929 Lagonda 3 litre Tourer, but apart from the fact that it was entered in the run by Tom Sharples of New Longton, Preston, there's no other information in the programme of the event about this car. According to the list of models in the Wikipedia article about Lagonda, it's got a 2931cc ohv 6-cylinder engine and 570 of these cars were made between 1928 and 1934.
