1951 Fordson E83W

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990 at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally.
It's not listed in the programme of the event but it’s a 1951 Fordson E83W pickup truck which has a four-cylinder inline 1,172cc engine. The vehicle was in production from 1938 to 1957.

1949 Leyland Titan PD1/3

This is a photograph that I took at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1993.
I didn’t make a note at the time about this bus, but it appears to be one of the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s own vehicles, a 1949 Leyland Titan PD1/3, about which the programme of the event had this note:

Leyland Titan PD1/3, Metro-Cammell H30/26R,1949                                                                   JNA467
Manchester City Transport 3166
Entered by P.F.Wotton, Littleborough
Operated by M.C.T. until 1969, this vehicle carries bodywork to Manchester’s own design and is the sole survivor of a batch of 100 identical buses. It operated both North and South of the city during its career.

1928 Chrysler Model 72 Roadster

This is a photograph that I took at the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1983.
It’s a 1928 Chrysler Model 72 Roadster and a note in the programme of the event reads as follows:

144   1928 Chrysler Roadster “72”
           Reg: YV 6036, 6-Cylinder, 26 hp, 4096cc
(Nigel F. Walker DSO, DFC, Oxford)
Making its Manchester to Blackpool debut, this impressive American import has standard external contracting brakes, and the powerful 4-litre seven-bearing six cylinder engine.

1974 Bitter CD

Erich Bitter built his first car in 1973 based on an Opel floorplan and running gear, and between 1973 and 1986 he built 395 Bitter CD's and 488 SC's. Three of these cars were displayed by the Bitter Owners Club at the Footman James Classic Car Show Manchester at EventCity in September 2018 and this is one of them.
It’s a 1974 Bitter CD, and was described as follows:

'395 examples of the CD were built by Baur of Stuttgart for Bitter between 1973 and 1979. This CD is the only CD in the UK and was a personal import. The car is based on a shortened and stiffened Opel Diplomat chassis and fitted with a 5354cc American V8  (short block Chevy) and will achieve a top speed of 130mph. This was the 10th CD built and exported to South Africa by GM to try and establish the Marque there but no others followed. It was brought to the UK from South Africa in 2015 by its current owner. There are now less than 200 CD's left, mostly in Germany with a few in the Netherland, Belgium and the USA.
The car is owned by Andrew Grace.'

1948 Leyland Tiger PS1

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.
It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but it’s a 1948 Leyland Tiger PS1, originally Leeds Corporation fleet no 28 and has a Roe B36R body. It was withdrawn from service in 1962 and is now preserved at Keighley Bus Museum Trust.

1926 Jowett

This is a photograph that I took before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.
It’s a 1926 Jowett and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

72.     F. Barrett, Accrington, Lancs
            1926 Jowett, 2-cylinder, 6.9 h.p.
Horizontally opposed twin cylinder engine, cone clutch, external brakes on rear wheels only. Restored in the late 1960s after standing in a field for over 12 years. The car was bought from a scrap yard in 1949 by a student for £15 and driven 5,000 miles through Europe and over the mountains of Norway and Sweden, almost to the Arctic Circle, returning with little trouble. Has been featured twice on BBC/TV. Today is the Jowett’s tenth Manchester/Blackpool run.

1928 Amilcar CGSS

This is a photograph I took just after the start point for the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1978.
It's the 1928 Amilcar CGSS of R.C. Stafford, and apart from that there's no information about the car in the programme of the event. The CGSS was produced by the Amilcar Company between 1926 and 1929 and had a 4-cylinder inline 1,074cc engine. The DVLA record says that YX15 is 'Not taxed for on road use'.

1956 Ford Zephyr Zodiac

This car was displayed on the stand of the 'Five Stars - Ford Mk1 Consul Zephyr Zodiac Owners Club' at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Exhibition Centre in Manchester in August 1990.
It's a 1956 Ford Zephyr Zodiac with a 6-cylinder inline 2,262cc engine, and was also referred to as a Ford Zodiac MkI after the Zodiac MkII was introduced later in 1956. The brochure of the event said this about the car:

'The stand this year celebrates the 1953 win of the Marque in that year's Monte Carlo Rally. Our car is owned by Andy Davies of Chorley, and won Best Car on our annual Manchester to Southport run.'

This is obviously not the actual car that won the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally - that was registration number VHK 194, and was driven by Maurice Gatsonides with Peter Worledge as his navigator (the rally number was 365 though). The DVLA say that KRJ 735 still exists and has only recently been re-taxed for another year.

Maurice Gatsonides, by the way, is much better known as the inventor of the 'Gatso' speed camera.

This is a photograph that I took at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.
It's a 1902 Wolseley Tonneau and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

1924 Peugeot Quadrillette

This is a photograph that I took before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1976.
It’s a 1924 Peugeot Quadrillette and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

39     G.O. Wallis, Oldham, Lancs.
           1924 Peugeot Quadrillette 5 h.p. 4-cylinder.
“Alexandra” was found last year in a barn in the south of France where she had been since before the war. It is the only Quadrillette known with a wagonette body. This body is predominantly wood and its main purpose in life was undoubtably to take animals to the local market. By the deposits in the back and the smell when found it had obviously not been cleaned since last used. The acetylene lighting is rather poor so let’s hope we finish before sunset.

1911 Vauxhall C-type Prince Henry Tourer

This is a photograph that I took in Manchester before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1973.
It’s a 1911 Vauxhall C-type and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

21.      Vauxhall Motors Ltd., Luton, Bedfordshire.
             (Driver – Mr. A.A.Garland).
             1911 Vauxhall C-type “Prince Henry” Tourer, 20 h.p.
Here is an early example of the famous “Prince Henry” models designed by Lawrence Pomeroy and regarded by some experts as the first true Vauxhall sports car. It is named after Prince Henry of Prussia who sponsored early motor reliability trials, and the original price of the chassis alone was £485. The 3-litre side-valve engine of four cylinder construction has a cone clutch, four-speed gearbox and bevel gear rear axle. Maximum speed is around 70 m.p.h. at about 25 m.p.g.

1906 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost

This is a photograph that I took on  a very wet day in Manchester at the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1967
.
It’s the original Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and this is the note about the car in the programme of the event:

22.     Rolls-Royce Limited, London, W.1.
            (Driver – Mr D.E.A.Miller-Williams, Rolls-Royce Limited).
            1906 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 7036 c.c.
This is the original Silver Ghost built at the first Rolls-Royce works in Cooke Street, Manchester. The distinguishing name comes from the fact that Mr. Claude Johnson, the first managing director of the Company, was determined to demonstrate the ability of a new 40/50 h.p. chassis and fitted a special aluminium painted body with all the external metal work silver plated. In May 1907 the car was driven from London to Edinburgh directly in its third gear, and shortly afterwards achieved a world record run of 14,371 miles without an involuntary stop. Four drivers worked in relays for fifteen weeks under continuous R.A.C. supervision to achieve this record. To date this magnificent machine has covered well over half-a-million miles.

N.B. America’s recent Artemis mission recently travelled about the same distance going to the Moon and back.

1903 Peugeot Fore-car

This is a photograph that I took on a very rainy day in Manchester in June 1984 at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run.
It's a 1903 Peugeot Fore-car and the passenger at the front must have had an extremely uncomfortable ride that day. The programme of the event had this note about the car:

7.    1903 Peugeot Fore-car,
       Reg: DS 6469 2-Cylinder 334cc
       ( W. Green, Blackburn)
Bought by its present owner in 1979, it is hoped to have this unusual tricycle ready for this year's Run. Not a lot is known of its history, but from the original logbook, it was apparently first registered in Southampton, and its reg. number then was AA 999.
