1907 Renault Landaulette

This is a photograph that I took in Manchester in June 1978 before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run.

It’s a 1907 Renault Landaulette and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

 

25        Mr. G. A. Griffin, Telford, Salop.

             1907 Renault Landaulette, 24.8 h.p.

This car was originally owned by the Hepworth family, and is one of the tallest cars made, being 7ft 6in high. It has a crest on the door declaring  “Loyal à Mort”. Her French ancestry is self-evident. It is being taken to Dieppe on April 20^th on a weekend rally.

1907 Rover Roi-des-Belges

This is a photograph that I took before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1978.

It's a 1907 Rover 20 with a Roi-des-Belges body, a car that was produced from 1907 to 1910 and had a 4-cylinder inline 3,251cc engine. The programme of the event had this note about the car (with the original spelling error);

12     Leyland Motors Historic Vehicles Ltd., Longbridge, Birmingham.

         1907 Rover, Roi de Belge Tourer, 20 h.p.

This model was originally announced in 1905 as the 16/20 h.p. car. Cylinder dimensions of 95mm x 110 mm were the same as those of the 1905 6 h.p. car and several components were common. The model achieved fame by winning the Tourist Trophy Race in the Isle of Man during 1907 driven by Ernest Courtis, who was Rover's Chief Tester at the time. His average speed was 28.8 mph for six laps of the 40.3 mile circuit. The car's normal maximum in "as sold" condition was about 45 mph and the chassis price was £375.

I understand that this car is now in the British Motor Museum in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

 

1915 Swift

This is one of the cars that took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1978 and is pictured in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's the 1915 Swift of Mr D J Casson - I can't find out much information about this car, but there is a Swift Club for the owners of Swift cars. A note in the programme of the event says this about the car:

'22 Mr. D.J. Casson, Slyne, Lancaster

1915 Swift 10  h.p.

This car was delivered to a wealthy landowner in Morayshire for his daughter's use. She used the car for only a year or so, financial troubles caught up with the family, and the car lay derelict until 1927 in an old stable adjoining the Mansion house. Purchased by the present owner in August 1977.'

1911 Humber Sports Raceabout

This is a photograph I took in the marshalling area before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1978.

It's the 1911 Humber Sports Racebout of Mr B L Rockcliffe and I've not been able to find out anything about the car, but this is the note about it in the programme of the event:

Mr B.L. Rockcliffe, Leyland.

1911 Humber Sports Raceabout, 11 h.p.

This car was brought over from Switzerland after being seen in Berne last August. It was one of the rare 9s and 12s made for the American market (unfortunately the vehicles were underpowered for the Yanks).

1913 Adler 5/13PS Kleinwagen Tourer

This vehicle took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1978 and is pictured here in Manchester before the start of the run.

It's a 1913 Adler 5/13PS Kleinwagen Tourer but I no longer have the programme of the event so I don't have any details of the then owner. I have found, however, that the car was sold by Bonhams in December 2008 when it was stated that the car was chassis 7840 and had a four cylinder sidevalve engine of 1,292cc numbered 8112K.
