1938 Guy Wolf

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event but it’s a 1938 Guy Wolf with Waveney bodywork, one of the Llandudno Marine Drive Tour buses owned by Llandudno UDC and mainly used for the 5 mile tour round the Great Orme.

1948 Leyland Tiger PS1

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but it’s a 1948 Leyland Tiger PS1, originally Leeds Corporation fleet no 28 and has a Roe B36R body. It was withdrawn from service in 1962 and is now preserved at Keighley Bus Museum Trust.

1952 Leyland Comet

This was one of the entrants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but apparently it’s a 1952 Leyland Comet 90 Tractor Unit.

1956 Ford Zephyr Zodiac

This car was displayed on the stand of the 'Five Stars - Ford Mk1 Consul Zephyr Zodiac Owners Club' at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Exhibition Centre in Manchester in August 1990.

It's a 1956 Ford Zephyr Zodiac with a 6-cylinder inline 2,262cc engine, and was also referred to as a Ford Zodiac MkI after the Zodiac MkII was introduced later in 1956. The brochure of the event said this about the car:

 

'The stand this year celebrates the 1953 win of the Marque in that year's Monte Carlo Rally. Our car is owned by Andy Davies of Chorley, and won Best Car on our annual Manchester to Southport run.'

 

This is obviously not the actual car that won the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally - that was registration number VHK 194, and was driven by Maurice Gatsonides with Peter Worledge as his navigator (the rally number was 365 though). The DVLA say that KRJ 735 still exists and has only recently been re-taxed for another year.

 

Maurice Gatsonides, by the way, is much better known as the inventor of the 'Gatso' speed camera.

Daimler Conquest Drophead Coupé

This is a photograph that I took at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

 

It's a Daimler Conquest Drophead Coupé which had the same 6-cylinder inline 2,433cc engine as the Saloon and Roadster models.

1961 Leyland Titan PD3.4

This is one of the vehicles that took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It’s a 1961 Leyland Titan PD3.4 and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

1955 Leyland Titan PD2/11

This bus took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally  in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but it took part in the Rally in 1998, when the programme had this note about the vehicle:

New to Leeds Corporation Transport this is a very rare model of which only 20 were built, all 20 being supplied to Leeds, fitted with semi-automatic pneumocyclic transmission and air brakes. Bought for preservation in 1982 from a gliding club who were about to convert it to a towing winch. Now restored to mid 60's livery with period adverts.

1948 Leyland Tiger PS1

This vehicle took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1948 Leyland Tiger with a Brush body, and was provided new to Burnley, Colne and Nelson.  The note about it in the programme of the event reads as follows:

Sold by BCN in 1996 and purchased for preservation in 1974. During repairs to the body the rear entrance has been replaced.

1948 Bedford OB Plaxton

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990 at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally.

It's not listed in the programme of the event but it's a 1948 Bedford OB Plaxton, one of only 2 Plaxton bodied Bedford OB's thought to have survived. It was apparently new to Howard of Whitby in February 1948 and in 1990 looks to have been owned by Bee Coach Hire of Manchester.

1950 AEC Regent III

This is one of the vehicles that took part in the Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1950 AEC Regent III and the note about the vehicle in the programme of the event reads as follows;

Starting as a Greenline bus in 1950 this bus passed to London Country. London Transport purchased the bus back in 1972 and it was one of the last 13 RT's in service in 1979.

1948 Leyland Titan PD2/1

This was one of the participants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1948 Leyland Titan PD2/1 that was provided new to Weardale Motor Services of Frosterley, County Durham and remained with them until 1970. The programme of the event said this about the vehicle:

New to Weardale MS this bus was withdrawn in 1970. It was donated to BL Heritage after being restored by members of the Severn Valley Railway.

1949 Reliant Regent

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's a 1949 Reliant Regent with their own version of the 4-cylinder inline 747cc Austin Seven engine. The DVLA record shows that it still exists and is taxed up to the end of July 2026. It's the grandfather of Derek Trotter's 'Only Fools and Horses' 3-wheel Reliant Regal van.

1965 AEC Routemaster

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It's a 1965 AEC Routemaster and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

RM2116 is preserved in the livery of the Jubilee colours as worn when withdrawn in 1984.

1950 Foden PVSC6

This is a photograph that I took in September 1990 in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event but it’s a 1950 Foden PVSC6 with a Lawton C35F body which replaced the original Wadham body in 1954.

1964 AEC Regent V

This was one of the many buses on show at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1964 AEC Regent V and the programme of the event had this to say about it:

A Mayne and Son

Part of the collection of vehicles at the Museum of Transport, Manchester. This was one of the last AEC double deckers purchased by Mayne's and was finally sold in 1980 by them. Purchased the following year for preservation.

1951 AEC Regal IV

This is one of the vehicles that took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1951 AEC Regal IV with a Burlingham body but it's not listed in the programme of the event. It was apparently provided new to a company in Worcester and the 'FK' in the registration number shows that it was registered in Dudley. 

1949 Guy Arab III

This is a photograph that I took in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's a 1949 Guy Arab III and was new to Blackburn Transport in August 1949. It remained in service in Blackburn until 1973 when it was sold for preservation.

1970 Karrier Bantam Mobile Gas Showroom

This is one of the vehicles that was on display in Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1990.

It’s a 1970 Karrier Bantam modified for use as a Mobile Gas Showroom for the North Western Gas Board. The programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

Operated as a supplement to Gas Showrooms mainly in the South Lancashire area. Vehicle houses gas appliances from the 1960/70 period. Restored at the St Helens Workshops at St Helens.

1960 AEC Regent V

This was one of the buses that took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's not listed in the programme of the event but it's a 1960 AEC Regent V provided new to Sheffield Corporation, and has an Alexander H37/32R body. It was purchased for preservation in 1976.

1958 Leyland PD2/30

This is one of the vehicles that took part in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It's a 1958 Leyland Titan PD2/30 that was delivered new to Wigan Corporation in November 1958 with fleet number 115. It is chassis 581260 and has a 9.8 litre diesel engine with bodywork by Northern Counties. It remained in service with Wigan until 1971 and then became a driver training bus. It's not listed in the programme of the event, but when it took part in the Rally in 1996 there was this note in the programme:

Former Operator - Wigan. This 'Tin Front' Bus is housed in the Museum of Transport. The style of bus dates back to a BMMO design and later known as 'An Edinburgh Front'.
