1902 De Dion Bouton

This is a photograph that I took on a very rainy day at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.

It's the 1902 De Dion Bouton of W.A. Pownall, and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

5           Mr W. A. Pownall, Wilmslow, Cheshire.

             1902 De Dion Bouton 8½ h.p. 1-cyl. Tonneau.

This car spent a good deal of its life in India, hence the Surrey Top. It then belonged to an Indian Prince.

1901 De Dion Bouton 4½hp Voiturette

This was one of the entrants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980 and is pictured in a very wet Manchester before the start of the run.

It's the 1901 De Dion Bouton of Major Arnold Pownall and a note in the programme of the event says this about the car:

 

3. Major A.Pownall, Wilmslow, Cheshire

1901 De Dion Bouton 4½ h.p. Voiturette

This single cylinder car was assembled in America and spent its life there until 1972, when it was imported into this country.

 

The DVLA record says that the car is currently taxed and this is due for renewal in May 2026.

1925 Lancia Lambda

This is a photograph I took at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980 with the vehicles lining up to be flagged off one by one to start the Run.

This is a 1925 Lancia Lambda and the programme of the event has this note about the car:

107     J.V. Muschamp, Cowling, Nr. Keighley, W. Yorks.

            1925 Lancia Lambda, 4-cylinder, 2570 c.c.

This is a fifth series Lambda Torpedo Tourer. It was completely rebuilt four years ago. Interesting features on the Lambda are the sliding pillar independent front suspension, monocoque chassis and V4 engine.

1908 Minerva N

This was one of the cars that took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.

It's a 1908 Minerva N, and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

25   Kevin Bann, Fence, nr. Burnley, Lancs

       1908 Minerva 'N' two-seater 4-cylinder, 20/25h.p.

Part of the Peter Black collection, this powerful 4-cylinder car, made in Belgium, was a market competitor of Rolls-Royce for a period. This particular car started life with a commercial body and the present body was fitted by the Peter Black collection craftsmen.

1904 Turner Miesse

I took this photograph in a very wet Manchester at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.

I no longer have the programme of this event, but this is a 1904 Turner Miesse steam car which it seems was, and still is, owned by the Black Country Living Museum. The Turner Manufacturing Company originated as an engineering business around the middle of the 19th century in a small workshop in Wolverhampton. In 1902 the company’s owner, James Burns Dumbell, obtained the manufacturing rights for the Belgian Miesse steam car from the Brussels based company of J. Miesse. The Miesse steam cars were a first class design and proved to be very popular in Europe. At this time petrol engines were not always reliable and so there was a place in the market, albeit briefly, for steam cars. The car had a three cylinder, single acting engine (steam only admitted above the piston) with a paraffin-fired flash boiler.

1930 Standard Teignmouth

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.

It's a 1930 Standard Teignmouth but I no longer have the programme of the event so don't have details of the car and owner. I found this information in the Standard Register:

'A very popular model was the four door, four light, ‘Teignmouth’ fabric saloon.  This was later joined by a six-light steel-bodied coach built saloon which was also called the ‘Teignmouth’, this was joined in the range by the ‘Selby’ tourer, and the continental looking, two door, four seater, fabric bodied tourist coupe.     A contemporary road test of the ‘Teignmouth’ saloon, then priced at £215, showed a top speed of 52 m.p.h., 10 – 30 m.p.h. in middle gear in ten seconds, and petrol consumption of 32 – 34 m.p.g.  The gear ratios were 5.0, 9.3 and 20.0 to 1.'
