1902 Wolseley Tonneau

This is a photograph that I took at the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.

It's a 1902 Wolseley Tonneau and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

6.      Major James Gardiner, O.B.E., J.P., Thelwall, Warrington.

         1902 Wolseley Tonneau two-cylinder 4½. x 5¼ in.

This car was delivered to the famous Engineer William Worby Beaumont, a founder member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, who wrote the first technical book on motor cars on July 16th, 1902.

1909 F.N. (Fabrique Nationale)

This is a photograph that I took at the Broad Street/Cross Lane roundabout in Salford of one of the cars that took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.

It's the 1909 F.N. of Mr W.G.Steele, and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

16.  Mr. W.G. Steele, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent

         F.N. (Fabrique Nationale) Belgium 6-12h.p.

This car was originally owned by the Belgian Royal Family. Its snake horn “Horace” was in the film “School for Scoundrels” with Terry-Thomas. Many times Concours winner, including Grand Concours 1961, International Goodwood. This car is one of the many exhibits on show in Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire, Motor Museum, which also houses all forms of antique travel. Competed in all the previous Manchester/Blackpool Rallies and won the Vigzol Trophy in 1964.

N.B. The Vigzol Amoco Trophy was awarded for the Veteran or Edwardian car covering the greatest distance to the start under its own power.

1930 Rolls Royce 20/25

This is a photograph that I took on Salford Crescent during the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.

It's a 1930 Rolls Royce 20/25, a car that was produced from 1929 to 1936 with a 6-cylinder inline 3,669cc engine. The programme of the event had this note about the car:

153.  Modern Age Motors, Preston. (Driver - J.D. Fildes).

         1930 Rolls Royce Open 4-seater Tourer 25.3 h.p.

1930 Aero Morgan

When I went to the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966 I walked from the start point to the roundabout that at one time stood at the junction of the A6 and Cross Lane in Pendleton and when most of the cars had come past I walked back along the A6 towards the start point in Albert Square. On the way I came across this car stopped at the side of the road, presumably with some mechanical problem.

It's a three-wheel Aero Morgan, the only one in the Run and the only information in the programme of the event is this:

 

'158. Mr S.D. Wright, Manchester.

          1930 Aero  Morgan, 1100 c.c.'

 

The first three-wheel Morgan was built in 1911 and they were produced until 1952 with constant improvements being made. A three-wheel Morgan was also produced from 2012 till 2021.

1914 Belsize

This was one of the cars that took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966 and is pictured at the roundabout that at one time stood at the junction of the A6 and Cross Lane in Pendleton.

It's a 1914 Belsize, built by a company that began as Marshall and Company - probably Manchester's first car manufacturer, producing its first car at its factory in Clayton in 1897 which was badged as a Marshall. The company became Belsize Motors Limited in 1906 and continued producing cars until it ceased trading in 1925, having been in the hands of the receivers since 1923. A note in the programme of this event reads as follows:

30.   Mr. G.S. Fowler, Altrincham.

          1914 Belsize 2-seater 12 h.p.

This car was manufactured in Manchester and was found in a Belfast scrap yard about 15 years ago. Restored by the owner and has since been to Amsterdam, Galway, Brussels, and has just returned from the International Rally in Southern Eire.

1905 Alldays and Onions

This is a photograph that I took during the Lancashire Automobile Club's  Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966 at the roundabout that at one time stood at the junction of the A6 and Cross Lane in Pendleton.

It's a 1905 Alldays & Onions and the only information about it in the programme of the event reads as follows:

'10.  Mr L. Gleave, Wybunbury, Cheshire. (Driver - Air-Commodore R.L. Kippenberger).

1905 Alldays and Onions open four-seater 11 h.p.'

 

Onions (formed by John Onions in 1650) and William Allday & Co. (formed by William Allday in 1720) joined in 1889 under the ownership of Alldays & Onions Pneumatic Engineering Company Limited and produced its first car in 1898. The company hit commercial success with the 1.6-litre, vertical-twin side-valve 10/12, which was made from 1905 to 1913.

1914 Vinot Et Deguingand

I took this photograph during the Lancashire Automobile Club's  Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966 at the roundabout that at one time stood at the junction of the A6 and Cross Lane in Pendleton.

It's the 1914 Vinot et Deguingand of D G Dixon and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

 

30. Mr. D.G. Dixon, St. Helens

1914 Vinot Et Deguingand 4-seater tourer 1690c.c.

Only two other examples of this make are known in this country. The body was built in London, so the vehicle was probably imported from France as a chassis only. It has a very good performance for its comparatively small engine, and in 10 years has only failed once due to magneto trouble.

1900 Georges Richard Dogcart 9hp

This is a photograph I took at the Broad Street/Cross Lane roundabout in Salford of one of the cars that took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.

It's the 1900 Georges Richard Dogcart 9hp of  Mr J. E. Crossman of Whiston, Lancs and the programme of the event had this to say about the car:

'Found in a field in Shropshire about 19 years ago by the present owner. Regularly completes the London/Brighton run. Has a transverse engine (like a Mini) in principle, drives with a flat belt to the 4-speed and reverse Gearbox and by Chains to rear wheels. Wheels are wooden, solid tyres on rear and pneumatic on front.'

On 14 December 2021 I showed a photograph of the same Georges Richard Dogcart that I had taken at Oulton Park in May 2019.

1934 Sunbeam Twenty-Five

I took this photograph on The Crescent in Salford (the A6) during the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car run in June 1966. You can see the spire of Salford Cathedral in the background.

It's a 1934 Sunbeam Twenty-Five with a 3,317cc 6-cylinder engine. The car belonged to the actress Pat Phoenix who played Elsie Tanner in the Coronation Street TV programme and she was in the back seat of the car that day.

1897 Daimler 4hp Twin-Cylinder Tonneau

I took this photograph at the roundabout that at one time stood at the junction of the A6 and Cross Lane in Pendleton which was my vantage point for the Lancashire Automobile club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1966.

It's an 1897 Daimler 4hp Twin-Cylinder Tonneau, but I have no further information about the car or the owner as I no longer have the programme of the event.
