Jaguar D-Type Replica

I took this photograph at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It resembles a 1956 Jaguar D-Type, but it's obviously a replica as the shape of the car isn't quite right. I can't find out much about the car, except that the DVLA says it's a Jaguar that was manufactured in 1970 and has a 4,235cc engine - which is the capacity of the 4.2 litre version of the Jaguar XK engine.

JDC Inter-Marque Championship Race, Oulton Park 1987

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane during the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

Leading is the Jaguar E Type of Malcom Hamilton followed by the Porsche Carrera RSR of Gideon Hudson and the Aston Martin V8 of Mike Cousins. Bringing up the rear is Richard Chilton in his CAS Motor Sport Porsche 911 Carrera.

MG Midgets

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane during the MG Cockshoot Cup Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

Chris Wright is leading Darrell Atherton and both are driving MG Midgets. The MG Midget was produced from 1961 to 1980 and according to the programme of the event both cars have the 1,250cc engine that was introduced in the MkIII in 1966. This doesn't necessarily mean that one or both of the cars are MkIII models as the 1,098cc engine of an earlier car could have been replaced by this larger engine, and the programme doesn't show the years of the competing cars.

MGB Roadster

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane during the MG Cockshoot Cup Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

Leading is the MGB Roadster of Mark Ashworth followed by the MG Midget of Ashley Jacques and the Austin Healey Sprite of Rick Frisk. The programme of the event doesn't show the year of manufacture of any of the cars.

Porsche 911 Carrera

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's the Porsche 911 Carrera entered for the race by C.A.S. Motor Sport and was driven in the race by Richard Chilton. The only information in the programme of the event is that it had a 3 litre engine. The car competed in another race at this meeting, this time as number 25, and I showed photographs of the car in that guise on 2 February 2015.

Jaguar C-Type Replica

During the Jaguar Drivers' Club's meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 there was a parade round the circuit by some of the JDC members in their cars. I took these photographs close to the Cascades corner where the cars gathered before joining the circuit at Clay Hill via the old short circuit track.

It's a Jaguar C-Type, presumably a replica with a 6-cylinder 3,442cc Jaguar XK6 engine. I can't find any information about the car and the DVLA record says that 708 HP is now a red 1995 Rover.

Lotus Cortina

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane at Oulton Park during the CSCC Pre '65 Saloon Car Challenge Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting in April 1987.

There were ten Lotus Cortinas in this race, together with four Ford Cortina GTs and I'm having some difficulty trying to identify the cars shown here. The second car is that of Colin Woodcock and the fourth car Simon Sayward's,but I don't know who was driving the car between those two. The car in the lead appears to be Chris Boon's, which the programme of the event shows as the only red Lotus Cortina in the race. Colin Chapman's collaboration with Ford started in 1961 when he commissioned Harry Mundy to design a twin-cam version of the Ford Kent engine. It first appeared in a Lotus 23 in 1962 and was used in the Lotus Elan which was introduced that year. Ford then approached Colin Chapman to suggest that Lotus should fit this engine to 1,000 examples of the Ford Cortina so that they could homologated for Group 2 racing. Between 1963 and 1966 3,306 examples of the Mark 1 Lotus Cortina were produced.

Lister Jaguar

This car competed in the JDC Modified Jaguar Challenge and JDC Lister Challenge race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's shown in the programme of the event as a 3,781cc Lister Jaguar driven by Aidan Mills-Thomas and has the 'knobbly' body which featured on the 1958 cars.

The car was apparently severely damaged at one point, to the extent that it's registration number (WTM 446) and chassis number (BHL126) were transferred to another Lister Jaguar.

This change of identity was subsequently disputed, and the result was an extremely expensive court case in which the judge finally decided that it was not his place to decide such a matter. The court case is referred to in this description of the other car involved, a 1963 Lister Jaguar GT Prototype.

The photograph below is one that I took of the 1963 Lister Jaguar GT Prototype at Silverstone in 1998.

Porsche 930 Turbo

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Intermarque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's the Porsche 930 Turbo of Chris Millard. The Porsche 930 Turbo was a turbocharged version of the Porsche 911 and this car has the 3,299cc version of the flat-6 engine which was produced from 1978 to 1989.

Austin Healey Sebring Sprite

This car took part in the MG Cockshoot Cup Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Tony Whitehead's Austin Healey Sebring Sprite, which the programme of the event says has a 1,300cc engine. The registration number is XNB 712 and there's a short history of this car here. The photograph was taken just after Foulstons chicane at the beginning of the long run to Knickerbrook.

Porsches

These cars are taking part in the 36 lap 100 mile Cheshire Cats' Trophy Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 and are pictured at the exit of Lodge Corner at the start of the finishing straight.

Car number 35 is the 3.3 litre flat-6 Porsche 930 Turbo of Nick Wenham and Chris Millard and the driver is indicating that he is preparing to pull into the pits just a short distance ahead. The overtaking car number 24 is the 3 litre flat-6 Porsche 911 RS of Martin Quick and Bryan Eccles.

SS Jaguar 100

During the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 there was a parade of Jaguar cars round the circuit, and this is one of those taking part.

It's a 1938 SS Jaguar 100, one of 118 cars built from 1938 to 1941 with the 3,485cc straight-6 engine. The earlier version of the car had a 2,663cc engine and 191 examples were built between 1935 and 1939. That car was the first of the SS cars to bear the Jaguar name.

Aston Martin V8

This car competed in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Mike Cousins' Aston Martin V8, a car that was produced from 1969 to 1989 with a 5,340cc fuel injection V8 engine. Originally called the Aston Martin DBS V8 and marketed alongside the straight-6 Aston Martin DBS it became simply the Aston Martin V8 when production of the six-cylinder car ended in 1972.

Jaguar E-type

This car was one of a group of Jaguars that paraded round the Oulton Park circuit during a break in the racing at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting in April 1987.

There's no information about the car in the programme of the event, but it appears to be a Jaguar E-type Lightweight replica.....

.....with Ecurie Ecosse badging.

Porsche RSR

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Mike Holland's car, listed in the programme of the event simply as a Porsche RSR and having an engine capacity of 3,500cc. It competed in the Porsche team against teams of AC Cobras. Aston Martins, Ferraris and Jaguars.

Here's the car during the race at what was then Foulstons chicane, but is now known as Britten's.

TVR Tuscan

This car took part in the Cheshire Cats' Trophy Race, which was for roadgoing production sportscars, at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Paul Weldon's 1967 TVR Tuscan. The Tuscan, first produced in 1967, was based on the Grantura and the early cars were powered by a 289 cu in (4.7 litre) Ford V8 engine. Later cars had a 4.9 litre Ford V8 engine, but few vehicles were sold with the V8 engines and in 1969 the Tuscan was given a 3 litre V6 Ford engine. Paul Weldon's car has the early 4.7 litre engine.

Honda S800

Here's a car that took part in the Cheshire Cats Trophy Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Norman Mortimer's Honda S800, a car introduced by Honda in 1965 to replace the smaller-engined S600.

Turner

The Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 included The Cheshire Cats Trophy Race, a 36 lap 100 mile race for production sports cars which included the car shown below.

It's a Turner Mk1, and the co-drivers are shown in the programme of the event as Tony Broom and Geoff Sizzey. Turners were produced in the 1950s and 60s both in kit form and as complete cars, and you can read about the Turner Company here.

Lotus Cortina

The Jaguar Drivers' Club Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 included as one of the events The CSCC Pre '65 Saloon Car Challenge Race. The field included no less than ten Lotus Cortinas and here are photographs of two of them.

Jaguar Lister XJS

This car competed in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's a 5.3 litre Jaguar Lister XJS, entered by BLE Automotive/WP Automotive and driven in the race by Iain Exeter. The Wikipedia article about the Jaguar V12 engine says this about the Jaguar Lister:

Lister Cars, a well-known Jaguar tuner with a long history of technical collaboration with the British automaker. The first Jaguar Lister XJRS's were built by the company BLE Automotive in Erdington, Birmingham in the early 1980s until the Lister brand was passed on to WP Automotive of Leatherhead.
