1935 Lagonda Rapier

This is a photograph that I took at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

It’s the 1935 Lagonda Rapier of I.Rowe which the programme of the event says had a 1,100 cc engine. 470 of these cars were built by between 1934 and 1935 and a further 46 by Rapier Cars who took over the rights to make the Rapier after the Lagonda company failed in 1935. It was originally made with a 4-cylinder inline 1,104cc engine which was later reduced to 1,084cc to allow it to compete in the 1,100cc racing class.

Morris 14

 I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It’s a Morris 14, a car that was produced from 1936 to 1937 and had a 6-cylinder inline 1,818cc engine. The DVLA record says that the vehicle record could not be found.

1970 Lotus 72

This is a photograph that I took at Deer Leap during the HSCC Pre ’71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club’s Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It’s the 1970 Lotus 72 entered by Haslemere Sports Cars and driven by Mary Foulston. It is chassis 72/R4 and belonged to the then owner of the Oulton Park racing circuit (and Brands Hatch and Snetterton), John Foulston. The Lotus 72 was designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe and had the Ford Cosworth DFV 2,993cc V8 engine. Jochen Rindt won the World Driver's Championship in 1970 with the Lotus 72  as did Emerson Fittipaldi  in 1972, Lotus winning the World Constructor's Championship in 1970, 1972 and 1973.

Morris Minor 8hp

This is one of the cars that took part in a Vintage & Historic Vehicle Display & Run organised by the Saddleworth Museum in June 1987.

It’s not mentioned in the entry list, but it appears to be one of the 8hp Morris Minors built between 1928 and 1932 which had a 4-cylinder inline 847cc engine.

1929 Lovell Elkhart Sprint Special

This is one of the cars that took part in the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy Race for Vintage Racing Cars at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

It’s the 1929 Lovell Elkhart Sprint Special of Nick Leston with a 3½ litre engine, and the programme of the event had this note about the car: 

'…..another American racer with a Model A Ford engine is Leston’s Lovell Elkhart Sprint Racing Car, which also wins the prize for the car with the longest name!'

1932 Austin 10

I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It’s a 1932 Austin 10 and should have a 4-cylinder inline 1,125cc engine, though the DVLA record says 1,141cc. It was introduced in 1932 and production lasted, with upgrades, until 1947.

1959 Lola FJ

This is a photograph that I took at Lodge Corner during the Lenham Storage Formula Junior Championship race at the HSCC Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It’s David Grant in his 1959 Lola FJ which has a 4-cylinder inline Ford Kent 1,098cc engine. Formula Junior was introduced in 1959 as a class of racing where younger drivers could be introduced to single-seater racing. It ended when Formula 2 and Formula 3 were re-introduced to the racing scene for the 1964 season. Formula Junior has continued to be featured at historic racing events.

1916/17 Laurel-Ford T

This was one of the competitors in a handicap race at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

The programme of the event says that It’s the 1916-17 Laurel-Ford T of B.M.Clarke with a 3,300cc engine (the original model T had a 177 cu in [2.9 litre] engine), but it doesn’t give any more information about the car. An online search for Laurel-Ford doesn’t help much, but it seems that the Laurel Company specialized in modifying Model T Fords for the race circuit. The DVLA record says that registration number DP 696 is now on a 2022 Hyundai.

1936 Ford CX

I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It's a 1936 Ford Model CX, a de-luxe version of the Model C, identifiable by the chrome strips across the radiator. It has the 4-cylinder inline 1,172cc Ford side valve engine that was used by many builders of 1950s 'specials' including the early Lotus cars.

1962 Brabham BT2

 

This is a photograph that I took at Lodge Corner during the Lenham Storage Formula Junior Championship  race at the Historic Sports Car Club’s Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It’s the 1962 Brabham BT2 of Mike Harrison which has a 1,098cc Ford Cosworth engine. Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac founded the MRD, or Motor Racing Developments team in 1961 and produced one car, the MRD1, latter changing the name of the team to ‘Brabham’ (and that car to ‘BT1’) when it was pointed out that the French pronunciation of MRD was a rather rude word. Eleven examples of the BT2 were  built.

1937 BMW 319

I took this photograph at the Vintage Sports Car Club's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

It was one of the entrants in the Concours d’Elegance and shown in the programme of the event as the 1937 BMW 319/55 of M.Garfit. HJ Adlington had arranged for Frazer Nash to import BMW cars into the UK in 1935, marketing them as Frazer Nash BMWs, and of the 102 BMW 319s built 26 were imported to the UK. They had a 1,911cc straight-6 engine and were badged here as Frazer Nash BMWs. The DVLA record shows that the car is still taxed and shows it as a 1937 Frazer Nash. The '55' after the '319' apparently refers to its 55hp which is more powerful than the standard 319 model.

1959/60 Lola MkII FJ

This car competed in the Lenham Storage Formula Junior Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1959/60 Lola MkII Formula Junior car of Tony Steele and appears to have a 4-cylinder online Ford Kent 1,098cc engine. Formula Junior was introduced in 1959 as a class of racing where younger drivers could be introduced to single-seater racing. It ended when Formula 2 and Formula 3 were re-introduced to the racing scene for the 1964 season and Formula Junior has continued to be featured at historic racing events.

1934 Buick

 I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

There was no list of the cars taking part in the car show, but the DVLA record says that this is a 1934 Buick with an engine capacity of 4,303cc. The nearest match I can find is the 1934 Buick Series 60 with an 8-cylinder inline 4,556cc engine.

1949 Talbot Lago T26C

This was one of the competitors in the Cheshire Building Society's Allcomers Race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

It's the 1949 Talbot Lago 26C of Colin Crabbe, chassis 110008. The Grand Prix regulations for 1946 to 1949, and for 1950 and 1951 after the World Drivers' Championship was introduced, stipulated a maximum capacity of 4½ litres for unsupercharged engine and 1½ litres for those with superchargers.

1987 Maserati Biturbo

This is a car that I photographed in the paddock at the Historic Sports Car Club’s Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It’s a 1987 Maserati Biturbo, a car that was produced between 1981 and 1994, but the early cars had a reputation for poor quality and reliability. There were three different sized twin-turbocharged V6 engines offered at 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 litres, and this car had the 2,491cc unit. The DVLA record says it has been untaxed since December 1994.

1929 Humber 16/50 Saloon

I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It’s a 1929 Humber 16/50 Saloon a car that was produced from 1928 to 1932, a successor to the 14/40, and had a 2,110cc six-cylinder engine – though the DVLA record for this car says it’s 1,572cc. There's a Humber Register for enthusiasts and owners of early Humber cars.

1930 Riley Brooklands

This car took part in two scratch races at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987 and is here seen at Lodge Corner during one of those races.

It's Neville Farquhar in his 1930 Riley Brooklands with a tuned version of the Riley Nine's 1,087cc 4-cylinder inline engine. The Riley Nine was designed by two of the Riley brothers, Percy and Stanley, and the Brooklands was the work of John G Parry Thomas and Reid Railton who shortened the chassis by some 15 inches and fitted an undershield the full length of the car. The engine had high compression pistons, special camshafts and 2 carburettors, increasing its output to 50bhp.

1959 Lister Jaguar

I took this photograph at Lodge Corner during the HSCC Pre ’60 Historic Sports Car Championship race at the HSCC Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's a 3.8 litre Lister Jaguar driven by Aidan Mills-Thomas and has the 'knobbly' body which featured on the early Lister Jaguars. The car was apparently severely damaged at one point, to the extent that it's registration number (WTM 446) and chassis number (BHL126) were transferred to another Lister Jaguar. This change of identity was subsequently disputed, and the result was an extremely expensive court case in which the judge finally decided that it was not his place to decide such a matter.

1929 Lea Francis

I took this photograph at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It’s a 1929 Lea Francis with what the DVLA record says is a 1,479cc engine. A search of Lea Francis models doesn’t show any with that size engine, so it’s probably a Lea Francis 12 which had a 1,496cc engine. There's a Lea-Francis Owners' Club for owners and enthusiasts.

1918 Straker Squire 24/90

This was one of the cars entered in the Cheshire Life Concours d'Elegance at the Vintage Sports Car Club's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in July 1987.

It's Adrian Liddell's 1918 Straker Squire 24/90 which the programme of the event says has a 3,921cc engine, though the 24/90 had a 6-cylinder inline 4,962cc engine - the DVLA record also says that it has a 3,921cc engine. The 20/25 had a 3.9 litre engine, so perhaps this car has had a change of engine at some point in its life.
