MG Midgets

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane during the MG Cockshoot Cup Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

Chris Wright is leading Darrell Atherton and both are driving MG Midgets. The MG Midget was produced from 1961 to 1980 and according to the programme of the event both cars have the 1,250cc engine that was introduced in the MkIII in 1966. This doesn't necessarily mean that one or both of the cars are MkIII models as the 1,098cc engine of an earlier car could have been replaced by this larger engine, and the programme doesn't show the years of the competing cars.

MGB Roadster

I took this photograph at Foulstons chicane during the MG Cockshoot Cup Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

Leading is the MGB Roadster of Mark Ashworth followed by the MG Midget of Ashley Jacques and the Austin Healey Sprite of Rick Frisk. The programme of the event doesn't show the year of manufacture of any of the cars.

Porsche 911 Carrera

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's the Porsche 911 Carrera entered for the race by C.A.S. Motor Sport and was driven in the race by Richard Chilton. The only information in the programme of the event is that it had a 3 litre engine. The car competed in another race at this meeting, this time as number 25, and I showed photographs of the car in that guise on 2 February 2015.

Jaguar C-Type Replica

During the Jaguar Drivers' Club's meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 there was a parade round the circuit by some of the JDC members in their cars. I took these photographs close to the Cascades corner where the cars gathered before joining the circuit at Clay Hill via the old short circuit track.

It's a Jaguar C-Type, presumably a replica with a 6-cylinder 3,442cc Jaguar XK6 engine. I can't find any information about the car and the DVLA record says that 708 HP is now a red 1995 Rover.

Porsche 930 Turbo

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Intermarque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's the Porsche 930 Turbo of Chris Millard. The Porsche 930 Turbo was a turbocharged version of the Porsche 911 and this car has the 3,299cc version of the flat-6 engine which was produced from 1978 to 1989.

Porsches

These cars are taking part in the 36 lap 100 mile Cheshire Cats' Trophy Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 and are pictured at the exit of Lodge Corner at the start of the finishing straight.

Car number 35 is the 3.3 litre flat-6 Porsche 930 Turbo of Nick Wenham and Chris Millard and the driver is indicating that he is preparing to pull into the pits just a short distance ahead. The overtaking car number 24 is the 3 litre flat-6 Porsche 911 RS of Martin Quick and Bryan Eccles.

Aston Martin V8

This car competed in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Mike Cousins' Aston Martin V8, a car that was produced from 1969 to 1989 with a 5,340cc fuel injection V8 engine. Originally called the Aston Martin DBS V8 and marketed alongside the straight-6 Aston Martin DBS it became simply the Aston Martin V8 when production of the six-cylinder car ended in 1972.

Jaguar E-type

This car was one of a group of Jaguars that paraded round the Oulton Park circuit during a break in the racing at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting in April 1987.

There's no information about the car in the programme of the event, but it appears to be a Jaguar E-type Lightweight replica.....

.....with Ecurie Ecosse badging.

Porsche RSR

This car took part in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Mike Holland's car, listed in the programme of the event simply as a Porsche RSR and having an engine capacity of 3,500cc. It competed in the Porsche team against teams of AC Cobras. Aston Martins, Ferraris and Jaguars.

Here's the car during the race at what was then Foulstons chicane, but is now known as Britten's.

TVR Tuscan

This car took part in the Cheshire Cats' Trophy Race, which was for roadgoing production sportscars, at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's Paul Weldon's 1967 TVR Tuscan. The Tuscan, first produced in 1967, was based on the Grantura and the early cars were powered by a 289 cu in (4.7 litre) Ford V8 engine. Later cars had a 4.9 litre Ford V8 engine, but few vehicles were sold with the V8 engines and in 1969 the Tuscan was given a 3 litre V6 Ford engine. Paul Weldon's car has the early 4.7 litre engine.

Turner

The Jaguar Drivers' Club's 6th Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987 included The Cheshire Cats Trophy Race, a 36 lap 100 mile race for production sports cars which included the car shown below.

It's a Turner Mk1, and the co-drivers are shown in the programme of the event as Tony Broom and Geoff Sizzey. Turners were produced in the 1950s and 60s both in kit form and as complete cars, and you can read about the Turner Company here.

Jaguar Lister XJS

This car competed in the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race at the Jaguar Drivers' Club's Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's a 5.3 litre Jaguar Lister XJS, entered by BLE Automotive/WP Automotive and driven in the race by Iain Exeter. The Wikipedia article about the Jaguar V12 engine says this about the Jaguar Lister:

Lister Cars, a well-known Jaguar tuner with a long history of technical collaboration with the British automaker. The first Jaguar Lister XJRS's were built by the company BLE Automotive in Erdington, Birmingham in the early 1980s until the Lister brand was passed on to WP Automotive of Leatherhead.

Austin Healey 3000

This car took part in the AMOC Thoroughbred Sportscar Championship Race at the Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's a 1959 Austin Healey 3000, entered by Denis Welch Swish Healey Racing Team and driven in the race by Denis Welch. You can read about the history of this particular car here.

Porsche 911 Carrera

This is one of the cars that took part in the two of the races at the Cheshire Cats' Trophy Meeting organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club at Oulton Park in April 1987.

It's a 3 litre Porsche 911 Carrera entered by C.A.S Motor Sport which as number 27 was driven in the 15 lap Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship Race by Richard Chilton. The notes in the programme of the event for the 36 lap Cheshire Cats' Trophy Race say; 'A 100 mile race for Roadgoing Production Sportscars with a current Road Fund Licence. Co-Drivers are allowed and a pit stop is mandatory between laps five and thirty-two. Refuelling is not allowed.' In that race the Porsche was number 25 and the driving was shared by Richard Chilton and Michael Phillips.

SS2 Swallow

On the Jaguar Drivers' Club stand at the Northern Classic Car Show at the Belle Vue Exhibition Halls in September 1986 was this 1933 SS2 Swallow.

Swallow Coachbuilding Ltd was founded by William Lyons in 1922 and he founded SS Cars Ltd in 1933, the companies being combined in 1934. After 1945 the company changed its name to Jaguar Cars Ltd. You can read here what Wikipedia says about SS Cars Ltd.

Jaguar Mk1 & Mk2

Here are some photographs taken at the Jaguar Drivers' Club event at Oulton Park in April 1987 billed as the 6th Cheshire Cats Trophy Meeting. They all feature the Jaguar Mk1 or Mk2 saloon of the mid 1950s to late 1960s.

This is the Mk2 of Laurence Bailey

Race 2 was the CSCC Pre '65 Saloon Car Challenge Race and this is Andrew Moore in a Jaguar Mk1 between two Lotus Cortinas at the Foulstons chicane.

Race 4 was the JDC Pre '68 Saloon Car Challenge Race and here is a group of Jaguar Mk1 and Mk2s at the Foulstons chicane.

Another pair of Mk2s in race 4 at the Foulstons chicane, I think this is Tony Williams in the red and silver car leading Rob Newall in the red one.

Another photograph from race 4 with what looks like Tony Williams and Rob Newall again at Foulstons, and you can see here the entire loop of the circuit from Island Bend through Shell Oils Corner to Foulstons. Foulstons is now called Britten's and Shell Oils Corner was originally called Esso Bend.

Jaguar

This is a photograph of a line of Jaguar E-types taken at The 6th Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club at Oulton Park on 25th April 1987.

After the Second World War Jaguar had produced three sports car models prior to the E-type in 1961, the XK120 from 1948 to 1954, the XK140 from 1954 to 1957, and the XK150 between 1957 and 1961. Here are photographs of each of these models taken at the same Jaguar Drivers' Club meeting.

Friday's Ferrari

The Cheshire Cats' Trophy meeting organised by the Jaguar Drivers' Club at Oulton Park in April 1987 included, as was usual in this type of event, Inter-Marque races in which drivers of other makes of car were invited to participate. Several Ferrari 308GTBs took part and the photographs below show three of these cars.

Car entered and driven by Colin Lee - being unloaded from its trailer above, and below exiting the chicane which was then known as Foulstons and heading towards the Knicker Brook corner. The area where cars are gathered and prepared prior to racing is known as the paddock and the paddock at Oulton Park in 1987 suggests the original meaning of the word - 'a fenced area used chiefly for grazing horses'. The whole area is now completely covered in tarmac. In the background you can see the footbridge which used to cross the circuit near to the start/finish line, but which was removed some years ago.

Another 308GTB in the paddock, this one being entered by Trafford Brake and Hose Services Ltd and driven by Malcolm Little. This car contested the Gordon Russell Furniture Inter-Marque Championship race together with the above car of Colin Lee.

This car, entered by Huntington Antiques Ltd with the driving shared by Mike Golding and Tony Harvey and seen here rounding Lodge Corner, took part in the later 100 mile Cheshire Cars' Trophy race.
