1935 SS Jaguar 90

This is a photograph that I took in September 1985 at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester.

It's a 1935 SS Jaguar 90 which has a 2,663cc six-cylinder inline Standard engine. In 1936 the SS60 was replaced by the SS100 and car production stopped in 1940. In 1945 'SS' was dropped from the company's name, becoming simply 'Jaguar'. 

Citroën 11 Cabriolet

I photographed this car at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1994.

It's a Citroën 11 CV Cabriolet, a car that was produced from 1934 to 1957 with five different engine sizes during that period. It was succeeded in 1957 by the ID19.

Singer Owners Club

I took this photograph of cars belonging to members of the Singer Owners Club at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

I didn't make a note of the individual cars at the time, but I've been able to identify the first four. On the left is a 1934 Singer 1½ litre Four Seater Sports Tourer, registration number US 5285 and next to that is a 1½ litre 1934 Singer Le Mans, BGN 1. The third car is a 1937 1 litre Singer 9, CTB 357 and then a 1936 1 litre Singer Le Mans, APW 971.

1953 Jaguar C-Type

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1983.

It's a 1953 Jaguar C-Type with the 6-cylinder inline 3,442cc Jaguar XK engine. It is chassis XKC 053 and was a works team car in 1953 when it finished in second place in the Le Mans 24 Hour race driven by Stirling Moss and Peter Walker, the race being won by another Jaguar C-Type driven by Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton. Stirling Moss and Peter Walker took the car to third place in that year's RAC Tourist Trophy race while Peter Whitehead and Ian Stewart finished in third place in the Goodwood 9 Hour race with the car. At the end of that season XKC 053 was sold to the Ecurie Ecosse team.

1955 AC Ace

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985.

It's a 1955 AC Ace and should have the 6-cylinder inline 1,971cc Bristol engine derived from the M328 engine that powered the pre-war BMW 328, though the DVLA record says that its engine capacity is 1,991cc and it is now blue.

1954 MG TD

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

It's a 1950 MG TD and has the 4-cylinder inline 1,250cc XPAG engine. The MG T-Type started with the TA in 1936 and ended with the TF which was produced from 1953 to 1955. The T-Type was superseded by the MGA.

1937 SS100 Jaguar

This was one of the cars on display at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985.

It's a 1937 SS100 Jaguar which should have a 6-cylinder inline 2,663cc engine, though the DVLA record says that is only 1,970cc. This particular car, CHP 402, was one of a 3-car team that won the manufacturers team prize at the 1937 RAC Rally.

1934 Singer Le Mans

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

It's a 1934 Singer Le Mans, a special version of the Singer Nine Le Mans car, which originally had a 4-cylinder inline 972cc engine. The 1934 Le Mans Special had a 6-cylinder 1,493cc engine and the cars finished in 7th and 8th place in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race that year. BGN 1 was apparently at one time owned by a colleague of Ian Fleming, Merlin Minshall, and his adventures with the car are recorded by the Singer Owners Club.

1950 MG TD

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1983.

It's a 1950 MG TD and has the 4-cylinder inline 1,250cc XPAG engine. The MG T-Type started with the TA in 1936 and ended with the TF which was produced from 1953 to 1955. The T-Type was superseded by the MGA.

1959 Triumph TR3

This is a photograph I took at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985.

It's a 1959 Triumph TR3, a car sometimes known as a TR3A because the wider grille on the later models make it look a different vehicle to the original TR3. The original Triumph TR3 was produced between 1955 and 1957 with a 1,991cc straight-4 engine, and later versions from 1957 to 1962 with the 1,991cc engine, but with the option of a 2,138cc engine from 1959.

1933 MG J2

This is a photograph I took at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

It's a 1933 MG J2 Sports and has a 4-cylinder inline supercharged 847cc engine. 2083 examples of the J2 were built between 1932 and 1934.

Sunbeam Cars

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

The car on the left is a 1956 Sunbeam Mk III, and on the right is a 1955 Sunbeam Alpine. Both cars have a 4-cylinder inline 2,267cc engine.

1974 Jaguar E-Type Series III

This was one of the cars displayed at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1983.

It's the 1974 Jaguar E-Type Series III with which Bob Tullius and his Group 44 racing team won the SCCA Class B Production Car Championship in 1975. The Series III marked the final years of the Jaguar E-Type and was produced from 1974 to 1997 with V12 engines of 5.3, 6.0 and 7.0 litres, Bob Tullius' car having the 5,344cc unit. The car is now owned by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato

I took this photograph at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985

It's an Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato and I don't have any details of the car, but the 'L' at the end of the registration number indicates that it was registered between 1 August 1972 and 31 July 1973. It's a left-hand drive car though, so could have been manufactured earlier than that and imported to this country at a later date. Two versions of the Junior Zagato were produced, both with a 4-cylinder inline engine. From 1969 to 1972 the car had a 1,290cc Twin Cam engine, then in 1972 the 1600 Junior Zagato was introduced with a 1,570cc Twin Cam engine. Production of that car ended in 1975.

1950 Jaguar XK120

This was one of the exhibits at the Northern Classic Car Show in Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

It's Ian Appleyard's 1950 Jaguar XK120, most famous for its exploits in the Alpine Rally, where it won a Coupe des Alpes (Alpine Cup) in 1950, which was awarded for finishing the event unpenalised. Ian Appleyard repeated this feat with the car in 1951 and 1952, thus being awarded a Coupe d'Or (Gold Cup) for winning a Coupe des Alpes in three consecutive years. He also won the RAC Rally and the Tulip Rally in 1951 with NUB 120.

Austin Healey 3000 Mk II

This is a photograph I took at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1983.

They are Austin Healey 3000 Mk II's, the one on the left being a 1963 car and the one on the right a 1964 car. In 1963 56 FAC was driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Donald Morley in the Sebring 12 Hour Race where they finished in 26th place and 4th in class. The next year Paddy Hopkirk drove 767 KNX at Sebring, this time partnered by Grant Clark, but they failed to finish after Grant Clark was involved in an accident after about 6 hours of the race. The Austin Healey 3000 has a 6-cylinder inline 2,912cc engine.

1952 Jowett Jupiter

This was one of the exhibits at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985.

It's a 1952 Jowett Jupiter and has a 1,486cc flat four Jowett engine. The DVLA record says that the car is still being taxed, but recent photographs show that it has been painted green.

1905 Rolls Royce 10hp

This was one of the exhibits at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1984.

It's a 1905 Rolls Royce 10hp, a twin cylinder car which was the first produced by the company set up by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce. I no longer have the brochure of the event so I don't know if it contains any more information about the car, but I understand that it is chassis 20154. There are four examples of this car known to exist and this one is owned by Bentley Motors.

1959 MGA

This was one of the exhibits at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1983.

It's the 1959 MGA with which Ted Lund competed in the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1959, 1960 and 1961. In 1959 he was partnered by Colin Escott but retired after 21 hours with a broken gearbox. In 1960 again with co-driver Colin Escott he finished in 12th place and won the under 2 litre class, then for 1961 he had a new co-driver, Bob Olthoff but their race ended after 2 hours with engine problems.

1935 Alvis Speed 20

This was one of the cars on display at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue, Manchester in September 1985.

It's a 1935 Alvis Speed 20 with a straight-6 engine that the DVLA record says has a capacity of 2,762cc, and it says that the car has not been taxed since August 2008.
