1979 TVR 3000M

This is a photograph that I took at Britten’s chicane during the HSCC Roadsports Championship Race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

Julian Barter in his 1979 TVR 3000M is leading, closely followed by the 1970 TVR Tuscan of Jim Baynham.

1913 Peugeot 148

This is a photograph that I took at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

There had been a parade in the morning for 1906-1914 GP cars, and after the lunch break these cars came round the circuit delivering the marshals to their posts. There isn’t a list of the cars in the programme but this is the 1913 Peugeot 148 of Clive Press, originally built with a 4,536cc 4-cylinder engine and later had a 9,934cc 4-cylinder Hall-Scott A-7 aero engine.

1920 Hudson Series 'O' Super Six Touring Phaeton

This is a photograph that I took at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's not listed amongst the cars that took part in the Concours D'Elegance at the meeting, but was with a group of similar cars near to the paddock. It's a 1920 Hudson Series 'O' Super Six Touring Phaeton and is chassis 34687.

Friday's Ferrari

The SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005 included 'A Demonstration of Italian Racing Cars' which consisted of some laps of the track by a variety of Maseratis, Ferraris and a Lancia D50. This is one of the Ferraris that took part in the demonstration.

It's Nick Mason's 1978 Ferrari 312 T3, chassis number 034 and the car Gilles Villeneuve drove for most of the 1978 racing season.

Chevron B17C and Lotus 69

This is a photograph that I took in the paddock at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

On the left is the 1970 Chevron B17C of Ray Davies, a Formula 2 car which took part in the Open Wheeled Chevron Race. It is chassis F2-70-2 and has a 1600cc Ford twin cam engine. The car on the right is Andy Middlehurst’s 1971 Lotus 69, a car designed to be used in Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula Ford racing. This car had a 1600cc engine in accordance with the Formula 2 regulations in 1971 - probably the Ford twin cam. The Lotus 69 was also used in Formula B racing in the United States.

1933/4 Riley 12/4 Special

This car competed in a handicap race and a scratch race at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It’s the 1933/4 Riley 12/4 Special of Alan Couper and has a 4-cylinder inline 1,496cc engine based on the Riley Nine engine. The 12/4 engine continued to be used in Riley cars until 1955.

1933 Talbot 105

This car competed in the Bill Phillips Trophy Race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's the 1933 Talbot 105 of Gideon Hudson, a car that was developed by Georges Roesch from the Talbot 90, the 6-cylinder inline 2,276cc engine of which was increased to 2,969cc. The Talbot 105 was a prominent competitor at Brooklands and also achieved success in the Alpine Trials.

Maseratis

The featured marque at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005 was Maserati with particular emphasis on the 250F and twelve of these cars are listed in the Celebration Maserati Invitation Race with a further four being shown as static display or track demonstration cars. This is a photograph that I took at McLean’s corner during that race.

Leading is Klaus Edel in the ex-Gilby Engineering Company's Maserati 250F, with the replacement chassis #2507/2 given to the car after an accident at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in 1954. Behind it is the 1934 Maserati 8CM, chassis #3009, of Sean Danaher and the car in the background seems to be Stefan Rettenmaier's 1956 Maserati 250F, chassis #2520.

1965 Lancia Flavia Zagato

This is a photograph that I took at tha exit of Lodge Corner during the HSCC Historic Roadsports Championship race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

It's Mark Hoble in his 1965 Lancia Flavia Zagato which has the 1.8 litre version of the 4-cylinder boxer engine.

1913 Sunbeam 25/30 Torpedo

This is a photograph that I took at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's a 1913 Sunbeam 25/30 Torpedo, chassis 5320, with a 6-cylinder inline 6,098cc engine. It looks like it should be one of the cars entered in the Concours D'Elegance, but it's not listed as such in the programme of the event. The DVLA record says that the car has been untaxed since October 2013.

1956 Lotus Eleven

This is a photograph that I took at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

It's the 1956 Lotus Eleven of Neil Davies that competed in the BRDC Historic Sportscar Championship race and which the programme of the event says has a 1,480cc engine. The Lotus Eleven was designed by Colin Chapman and the aerodynamic body by Frank Costin and was intended to compete in the 1,100cc sports car class. A Lotus Eleven with a 1,098cc Coventry Climax engine driven by Reg Bicknell and Peter Jopp finished in seventh place in the 1956 Le Mans 24 Hour Race, winning the 1,100cc class. The Lotus Eleven was raced with various other engine sizes up to 1,500cc, and for the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour Race Coventry Climax produced the 744cc FWC engine that enabled the Lotus Eleven of Cliff Allison and Keith Hall to win the 750cc class, and also the Index of Performance. 

The number 22 car in the background is Bernard Brock’s Formula Junior 1959 Elva 100.

1957 Maserati 250F

The SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005 produced probably the largest gathering of Maserati 250Fs that has ever been seen in this country - I understand that there were 24 in all. This is one of those cars, photographed at McLean's Corner during a track demonstration by a number of Italian cars.

It's Nigel Corner in the car that was campaigned mainly by Jean Behra in the 1957 season, but also driven that year by Juan Fangio and Harry Schell, and is chassis #2528. This car has been owned and raced by the Corner family, Nigel and his father Neil, since 1972.

1969 Lotus 61

This was one of the competitors in the HSCC Legends Racing Historic Formula Ford race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

It’s the 1969 Lotus 61 of Dick Dixon and has a 1,599cc 4-cylinder inline Ford Kent engine that was originally developed for the 1959 Ford Anglia, and styling reminiscent of the Lotus 56 which contested the 1968 Indianapolis 500 race. The car number 6 alongside is another Lotus 61, that of Neil Davies.

1952 Allard J2X Le Mans

This car competed in the Hawthorn International Trophy race at the Vintage Sports Car Club meeting at Oulton Park in June 2005.

It's the1952 Allard J2X Le Mans of Tom Walker. The Allard J2 had motor cycle style mudguards and the J2X was introduced to comply with 1952 FIA regulations which said that cars must have all-enveloping bodywork.

1935 Wolseley Hornet Special

This car competed in two races at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in June 2005.

It’s John Seber’s 1935 Wolseley Hornet Special and has a six-cylinder inline 1,630cc supercharged engine. There's a Wolseley Hornet Special Club for owners and enthusiasts.

1956 Maserati 250F

The featured marque at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005 was Maserati with particular emphasis on the 250F and twelve of these cars are listed in the Celebration Maserati Invitation Race with a further four being shown as static display or track demonstration cars. This is a photograph that I took at McLean’s corner during that race.

It's Stefan Rettenmaier's in his 1956 Maserati 250F, chassis 2520 which was driven for the Maserati team by José Froilán Gonzales in the Argentine Grand Prix in January of 1956 and by Pablo Gulle in the Buenos Aires City Grand Prix two weeks later. It was then sold to Australian Stan Jones (father of later World Drivers' Champion Alan Jones) who raced the car 'down under' with considerable success during the rest of the 1950s. In 1963 it was brought to the UK by Colin Crabbe and it passed through various other hands before spending some time in the private collection of Giulio Dubbini in Padova until it was acquired by Stefan Rettenmaier.

1963 Lotus 23B

This car competed in the Historic Motor Racing News Gentlemen Drivers Sports Racing Challenge race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's Marshall Bailey's 1963 Lotus 23B. The Lotus 23 was introduced in 1962 to compete in the smaller classes of sports car  racing and was used with engines with capacities ranging from from 750cc up to 1600cc. It proved to be an extremely successful car and about 130 examples of the Lotus 23, 23B and 23C were produced between 1962 and 1963.

1923 Vauxhall Rowley Special

This car competed in the Boulogne Trophy Race at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's the 1923 Vauxhall Rowley Special of Geoffrey O’Connell, a car that was built in 1978 with a 14-40 chassis and a 30-98 engine by John Rowley and Julian Ghosh. The car then had the registration number DS 7502 and was driven in VSCC races by Julian Ghosh, who later became President of the VSCC. In the early 1980's the car's chassis was shortened and a different engine fitted, and in the late 1980s the car passed to James Warne then soon afterwards to David Biggins. David Biggins competed with the car for about 15 years and it has had a few different owners since then, including one in Northern Ireland where it acquired a GIG 8664 registration number. The programme of the event says that its engine capacity is 4,224cc, presumably the Vauxhall OE engine.

1958 Bocar XP-5

I took this photograph at Britten's chicane during the 1950's Sports Racing Cars race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's Dean Butler's 1958 Bocar XP-5. The Bocar was a series of limited-production two-seaters developed by Bob Carnes in Lakewood Colorado starting with an experimental X-1 in 1958 which was followed by X-2 and X-3 examples and about five XP-4s. The first real production cars, begun in mid-1959 were the XP-5s which had a glass-reinforced polyester body surrounding a welded moly-tube space frame and a beefed-up Volkswagen rear suspension. The most common engine was a 283 cu in Corvette V8 unit. Dean Butler’s Bocar XP-5  was built by Bocar expert Doug Karon with Mustang front suspension, Jaguar rear suspension and a 383 cu in Chevrolet  small block engine - but the programme of this event says the car has a 4,735cc engine, which equates to 299 cu in.

1954 Maserati 250F

Maserati was the featured marque at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005, and in particular the 2½ litre 250F Formula One car. A total of 16 of the 250Fs appeared at the meeting, either competing or being displayed on and off the track, and here is one of them.

This is Josef Rettenmaier at McLean’s Corner during the Celebration Maserati Invitation Race in his 1954 car, chassis #2508, which was once owned by Stirling Moss. There were short notes in the programme of the event giving details for each Maserati 250F chassis number, and this is what it said about Josef Rettenmaier's car:
