1963 Lotus 23B

This car competed in the Historic Motor Racing News Gentlemen Drivers Sports Racing Challenge race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.

It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's Marshall Bailey's 1963 Lotus 23B. The Lotus 23 was introduced in 1962 to compete in the smaller classes of sports car  racing and was used with engines with capacities ranging from from 750cc up to 1600cc. It proved to be an extremely successful car and about 130 examples of the Lotus 23, 23B and 23C were produced between 1962 and 1963.

1956 Cooper T39

This car competed in the Louis Vuitton 1950s Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1996.

It's the 1956 Cooper T39 of Marshall Bailey, more commonly known as the Cooper Bobtail because of the truncated tail of the car which was aerodynamically effective, but which John Cooper claimed to have been shortened so that it would fit inside the works transporter. The car was used in the 1,100cc and 1,500cc classes of sportscar racing and this car has a 4-cylinder inline 1,460cc Coventry Climax engine. It was reputedly the road-holding characteristics of this car that led John Cooper to produce first the rear-engined 1½ litre Formula 2 car and then the 2½ litre Formula 1 car that gave Jack Brabham the World Drivers' Championship in 1959 and 1960. Cooper's successes led all the other teams to adopt the rear-engine layout, and the last Formula 1 Grand Prix to be won by a front-engined car was Ferrari's victory in the 1960 Italian Grand Prix.

1956 Lotus Eleven

This car competed in the BRDC Historic Sports Car Championship Race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2003.

It's the 1956 Lotus Eleven of Neil Davies which the programme of the event says has a 1,480cc engine. The Lotus Eleven was designed by Colin Chapman and the aerodynamic body by Frank Costin and was intended to compete in the 1,100cc sports car class. A Lotus Eleven with a 1,098cc Coventry Climax engine driven by Reg Bicknell and Peter Jopp finished in seventh place in the 1956 Le Mans 24 Hour Race, winning the 1,100cc class. The Lotus Eleven was raced with various other engine sizes up to 1,500cc, and for the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour Race Coventry Climax produced the 744cc FWC engine that enabled the Lotus Eleven of Cliff Allison and Keith Hall to win the 750cc class, and also the Index of Performance.

The car immediately behind the Lotus is the 1956 Cooper T39 Bobtail of Marshall Bailey that competed (with the number 19) in the Bonhams Drum Brake Sports Car Race. The number 6 car appears to be the 1955 Jaguar D-Type XKD505 that won the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hour Race driven by Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb, but the car isn't listed in any of the races in the programme of this event. Just visible on the right-hand side with the WEB 6 number plate is the 1950 Jaguar XK120 of Nigel Webb.

1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars

This is a photograph I took at McLeans Corner during the 1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

Leading is Marshall Bailey in his 1956 Cooper T39 Bobtail followed by the 1955 Maserati 300S of Rodney Smith (#3060) being driven by Mark Gillies. Closely behind Mark Gillies is the 1954 HWM Jaguar of Michael Steele and the car at the rear is the 1958 Lola Mk1 prototype of Richard Wills.

Lola T70 Spyder

On 24 April 2016 I showed photographs of a Lola T70 Spyder that took part in the Sports Racing Masters race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2006. Here are photographs of another Lola T70 Spyder that took part in the same race.

It's the 1966 car of Marshall Bailey with what the programme of the event says is a 5.7 litre engine, presumably the 350 cu in V8 Chevrolet engine that was fitted to many of these cars. Next to it are four cars that competed in the BRDC Historic Sports Car Race, the 3.4 litre Jaguar D-Type of Benjamin Eastick, and three Listers that aren't mentioned in the programme of the event. On the extreme left is the Cooper Maserati T51 of Andrew Garner that was driven in the HGPCA Pre-1966 GP Cars Race by Gary Pearson.

JBW F1

This car took part in the HGPCA Race for Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars at the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association's International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.

It's Marshall Bailey's 1959 JBW F1, a Maserati-engined car built by Brian Naylor's mechanic Fred Wilkinson to enable him to compete in British and International Formula One races. Brian Naylor didn't have much success in World Championship races, entering for six races over three seasons, failing to qualify for the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix, retiring in four other races, and finishing in thirteenth place in the 1960 British Grand Prix. The car derives its name from Naylor's forenames (John Brian) and the W from Fred Wilkinson's surname.

JBW F1

This car took part in the Historic Grand Prix Car Association Race at the VSCC's Boulogne and Hawthorn Trophies Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.

It's the 1959 JBW F1 car, built by Brian Naylor and his mechanic Fred Wilkinson round a 2½ litre Maserati engine. I saw this car race in the 1959 British Grand Prix at Aintree and once or twice when as a young schoolboy I used to cycle to Brian Naylor's car showroom on Wellington Road South in Stockport to see what cars he had on display there.

It was driven at this Oulton Park meeting by Marshall Bailey.
