1904 Ransomes, Simms & Jefferies traction engine

This is a photograph that I took at the Pallot Steam, Motor & General Museum in Jersey in May 2013.

It’s a 1904 Ransomes, Simms & Jefferies traction engine, and the Pallot Museum website has this to say about 'Dolly May' - named after the wife of Lyndon Charles 'Don' Pallot:

 

'This engine was brought over to Jersey soon after the Occupation, to be used for soil sterilization at La Valeuse Farm, St Brelade.  Fortunately, the ‘workings’ remained intact and eventually it was ‘put out to grass’.  It was only when the scrap man had been contacted on several occasions in the 1960’s and had failed to collect the machine that, in desperation, the owners got got in touch with the late Don Pallot, founder of the Steam Museum, and a deal was agreed for the sum of £12.10 shillings.'

1923 Ford Model T

I took this photograph at the Pallot Museum in Jersey which we visited during a holiday on the Island in May 2013.

It's a 1923 Ford Model T one ton truck owned and restored by Sam Pollet, and has a 4-cylinder inline 2,896cc engine.

1935 Morris 8

This is one of the vehicles displayed at the Pallot Museum when we visited it on a holiday in Jersey in May 2013.

It's a 1935 Morris 8 and has a 4-cylinder inline 918cc side-valve engine. Over 160,000 of these cars were produced between 1935 and 1937 and they were produced in saloon and open tourer versions.

Two US Military Vehicles

I took these two photographs at the Pallot Museum in Jersey which we visited while on holiday there in May 2013.

This one is a LaFrance M1A1 Heavy Wrecker, about 5,000 of which were produced during the Second World War.

This is a 1942 Mack NM5 Prime Mover, a heavy lorry constructed for military use from 1940 to 1945 by the Mack Manufacturing Corporation of New York U.S.A. It was brought to Jersey by the British Liberation Forces in 1945.

Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico

This is one of a variety of cars that were in the Pallot Museum in Jersey that we visited while on holiday in May 2013.

The Ford Escort Mark I was a successful rally car and the Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Its greatest victory was probably in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, driven by Finnish driver Hannu Mikkola with Swedish co-driver Gunnar Palm. Ford then produced this special edition road version named the Escort Mexico which had a 4-cylinder inline 1,598cc crossflow engine and over 10,000 of these cars were produced between 1970 and 1974.

Morris Commercial

This is one of the vehicles displayed at the Pallot Museum when we visited it on a holiday in Jersey in May 2013.

It's a Morris Commercial, probably one of the LC4 or LC5 that were produced between 1952 and 1960.

1960 Standard Companion

This is one of a variety of cars that were in the Pallot Museum in Jersey that we visited in May 2013.

It's a 1960 Standard Companion, an estate version of the Standard 10 with the same 4-cylinder inline 948cc engine. The Companion was produced between 1954 and 1961 when it was replaced by the Triumph Herald Estate.

1929 International Model S R Truck

During our holiday in Jersey in May 2013 we visited the Pallot Steam, Motor & General Museum which the advertising brochure says is "An absorbing evocation of times past. There is something to excite the interest of everyone in this fascinating collection of Steam, Motor, Farm and other machinery." This is one of the vehicles in the collection.

The Museum's description of this vehicle reads as follows:

'1929 International Model S R Lorry 25 h.p. 130” wheel base, 4 cylinder side valve Lycoming engine.  Supplied by Richmond of Bath Street, St Helier, Jersey.  Body and cab built by Underhills.'

1931 Chevrolet Truck

During our holiday in Jersey in May 2013 we visited the Pallot Steam, Motor & General Museum which the advertising brochure says is "An absorbing evocation of times past. There is something to excite the interest of everyone in this fascinating collection of Steam, Motor, Farm and other machinery." Inside you'll find cars, commercial vehicles, bicycles (unicycles, tricycles etc), assorted agricultural implements, steam locomotives, a variety of tractors, and there's even a church organ. This was one of the commercial vehicles on show.

It's a 1931 Chevrolet truck and the wording on the door says that it belonged to A.E Du Feu of St Helier.

1949 Austin FX3 Taxicab

 This is one of the vehicles I photographed on a visit to the Pallot Museum in Jersey in May 2013.

It's an Austin FX3 Taxicab, and judging by the Jersey registration number it's a 1949 model. The FX3 was produced from 1948 to 1958 and the coachwork on the Austin chassis was built by Carbodies of Coventry. It originally had the 2,199cc ohv petrol engine from the Austin 16, but because the petrol engined car proved expensive to run later models were given a diesel engine.

Sunbeam Mk III

This is one of a variety of cars that were in the Pallot Museum in Jersey that we visited in May 2013.

It's a Sunbeam Mk III, a car that was produced between 1954 and 1957 and was the final version of a series of cars that started with the Sunbeam Talbot 90 of 1948, the 'Talbot' being dropped for this model. Following on from the Sunbeam Talbot 90 Mk II and Mk IIA, the MkIII can be identified by the enlarged air intakes on each side of the radiator grille and the three small portholes just below the bonnet and near to the windscreen on each side of the car, though these are largely obscured by the wing mirror on this photograph. The Sunbeam Mk III was powered by a 4-cylinder inline 2,267cc engine, and it was good enough for one of the cars to win the 1955 Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Per Malling and Gunnar Fadum.

Ford Thames

I've showed photographs previously of some of the vehicles in the Pallot Steam, Transport & General Museum in Jersey which we visited in May 2013, and here's another of them.

It's a 1962 Ford Thames 15cwt, and you can read about it here. On 10 November 2015 I showed a photograph of another Ford Thames 15cwt which had been made into a replica of a Team Lotus transporter.

Dodge Truck

This is one of the commercial vehicles we saw in the Pallot Steam, Motor & General Museum in Jersey when we visited in May 2013.

It's a 1933 Dodge truck, produced after the company had been sold to Chrysler in 1928.

Albion Merryweather Fire Engine

This is another of the vehicles at the Pallot Steam. Motor & General Museum in Jersey that I photographed when we visited in 2013.

It's a 1934 Albion Merryweather fire engine which entered service in St Helier in January 1935 as the board in front of the vehicle tells you:

Mini Moke

This is another of the vehicles I photographed in the Pallot Museum in Jersey when we visited in 2013.

It's a Mini Moke from the late 1960s. As the name suggests it was designed to use parts from the Austin and Morris Mini cars, and one of the briefs was to produce a small jeep-like vehicle with 4 seats for the armed forces which could be dropped by parachute. The low ground clearance, however, meant that it was not suitable for off-road use and so the armed forces lost interest in the project. The car did become a cult vehicle though after appearing in television series such as The Avengers and The Prisoner. There is a club for enthusiasts of the Mini Moke - 'Moke', by the way, was on old British dialect name for a donkey.

Scammell Scarab

This is another of the vehicles in the Pallot Museum in Jersey which we visited in May 2013.

It's a 1964 Scammell Scarab and you can tell from the trailer that it was used in the brewing industry. Because of its very tight turning circle the Scarab was popular with companies that had to carry out deliveries in urban streets. The notice in the windscreen reads:

Austin 301

Here's another of the vehicles in the Pallot Museum in Jersey photographed in May 2013.

It's an Austin 301, a model that was produced between 1953 and 1957 and this TrucksPlanet.com site tells you a little bit about that model.

Morris Series Z Van

This is another of the vehicles I photographed in the Pallot Museum in Jersey when we visited in May 2013.

It's a 1940s Morris Series Z van, derived from the Morris 8 car, and I remember that many of these vehicles saw service in the Royal Mail and Post Office Telephone fleets.

Morris L type Commercial

This is a photograph of one of the commercial vehicles at the Pallot Museum in Jersey.

The only information about it at the museum is the notice in the windscreen which states that it's a 1925 Morris L type Commercial of 11.9 hp with a load capacity of 12 cwt, but I've been able to glean the following information from the Morris Register.

First produced in 1925 as a 12cwt payload van, a truck bodied variant was introduced in 1927 and both van and truck were produced until 1930. Mechanically the L type was very similar to the T “Tonner”. The vehicle used the same engine as the contemporary Morris Cowley car, a 1548cc 4-cylinder side valve 11.9hp Hotchkiss type with a 3 Speed gear box and magneto ignition with a clutch consisting of a cork insert between metal. Both the van and the truck had a 9ft 6in wheelbase chassis and a load capacity of 12cwt.
