1916 Willys Overland Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991, and is pictured in the Exchange Station car park before the start of the Run.

It's a 1916 Willys Overland Tourer, and the only information about it in the programme of the event is that it had a 4-cylinder 35hp engine and was entered by Dr M F Rudge of Ashton-in-Makerfield. The Overland Automobile Company was founded in 1903 by Claude Cox in Terre Haute, Indiana, and in 1905 moved to Indianapolis. In 1908 the Company was bought by John Willys and it was renamed the Willys-Overland Motor Company.

1910 Léon Bollée Landaulette

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1990, and is pictured in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's the 1910 Léon Bollée Landaulette of Kevin Bann, and the programme of the event has this information about the car:

Built in France at Le Mans by Léon Bollée, son of Amédée Bollée, pioneer of steam driven vehicles in France, this model, aimed at the American market, was backed with finance by the Vanderbilts. Cossetted passengers can communicate with the exposed driver by means of a speaking tube - forerunner of today's car-phone.

1929 Bentley 6.5 litre

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1987 and is pictured in the Exchange Station Car Park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's the 1929 Bentley 6.5 litre of William Loughran of Walmer Bridge, and the programme of the event said this about the car:

This car is a previous winner of the prestigious

Kensington Gardens Concours, and also a

previous winner on this Run. It has been 

owned and maintained by Mr Loughran and his

wife for the past six years. He specialises in

veteran and modern cars at his premises close

to Lancashire Constabulary Headquarters at

Hutton.

1929 Crossley 20.9 Tourer

This car is pictured in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991.

It's the 1929 Crossley 20.9 Tourer of Alan H Moores, a car that was built not far from there in Gorton. Crossley Brothers made their first car in 1904 and the vehicle manufacturing part of the company was registered as Crossley Motors Limited in 1906. Cars were made at their Napier Street - later renamed Crossley Street - site from 1904 to 1938, and buses till 1958. The Crossley 20.9 had the 6-cylinder inline engine from the Crossley 18/50, the 2,692cc unit being bored out to 3,198cc - though the DVLA record shows the capacity of NF 5377's engine to be 2,697cc. The programme of the event has this note about the car:

1912 Clément-Bayard 8hp

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1987 and is pictured before the start of the Run in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's the 1912 Clément-Bayard 8hp entered by Hilda Moores of Denton, and the programme of the event had the following information about the vehicle:

This two-seater was discovered derelict in 1984

and restoration is almost complete. The marque

competed in many early Grands Prix. A first for

the Manchester to Blackpool Run.

On 7 May 2017 I showed a photograph of a Clément-Bayard that I had taken at Oulton Park in 1992.

1925 Sunbeam 3-litre Super Sports

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car run in June 1986 starting from the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's shown in the programme of the event as a 1926 Sunbeam 3-litre Super Sports and has a 2,920cc 6-cylinder inline twin overhead camshaft engine. A note about the car in the programme says:

This car was designed specifically for the Le Mans 24-Hour Race, where on the only occasion it competed it finished second driven by Chassagne and S C H Davis, despite a fractured chassis. It still makes an annual pilgrimage to Le Mans in June, its considerable performance making it an ideal touring car even today. In 1984 it successfully completed a tour of Spain, and only a fortnight ago returned from a nine-day European trip taking in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland.

If this is that car then it should rightly be described as a 1925 car as the second placed car in the 1925 Le Mans 24-Hour Race was indeed the Sunbeam of Jean Chassagne and S C H Davis. The car was only offered for sale between 1926 and 1930 which is perhaps the reason for calling it a 1926 car.

1915 Overland Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1992 and is pictured here in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

The only information about it in the programme of the event is that it's a 1915 Overland Tourer entered by Robert S Kemp of Aughton near Ormskirk. The car was entered in the previous year's run, however, and the 1991 programme gave the following information:

This Overland was a one-family car for

more than 40 years from new. It is still in

totally original condition, and has only

covered minimal mileage in its lifetime.

Overland Motors was purchased by John North Willys in 1908, and the company was renamed Willys-Overland in 1912 so I suppose this 1915 car should be known as a Willys-Overland. It appears to be a model 83.

1929 Bentley 4½ Litre

This was one of the participants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991, and is pictured in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's the 1929 Bentley 4½ Litre of Russell Squires of Stalybridge and is chassis FB3315. It originally had a Weymann saloon body by Gurney Nutting, but was later rebuilt in the form shown above by Hoffman & Burton. A note in the programme of the event said this about the car:

1923 Rolls Royce Twenty Doctor's Coupe

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991, and is pictured here in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start.

It's not listed in the programme of the event, but is a 1923 Rolls Royce Twenty Doctor's Coupe, one of 2940 produced between 1922 and 1929. It is chassis number 86K2 and has a 20hp 6-cylinder 3,127cc engine, and coachwork by F Mitchell Ltd of Nottingham.

1923 Singer 10

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1987, and is pictured here in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's the 1923 Singer 10 of Clive Cooper and has a 1,097cc 4-cylinder inline sidevalve engine, and a note in the programme of the event said this about the car:

This Manchester registered car would appear to

have remained in the area all its life. A product

of the takeover by Singer of the Coventry

Premier Motor Co., it represented an entry into

the popular market, being a less costly version

of the Edwardian 10 hp model. The engine is

overhead valve, actuated by exposed push-

rods. It runs on beaded-edge tyres and has rear

brakes only.

There's a Singer Owners' Club for owners of the car and for Singer enthusiasts.

1921 Vauxhall 30/98 E-Type Velox

This car has just left the start point in the Exchange Station car park at the beginning of the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1986. That's Manchester Cathedral in the background.

It's the 1921 Vauxhall 30/8 E-Type Velox of Stuart L Baxter of Linthwaite, Huddersfield, and following it is another 1921 30/98, that of John Warburton of Atherton. The Vauxhall 30/98 was produced from 1913 to 1927 and the E-Type had a 4,525cc 4-cylinder inline engine - although the DVLA record says that this particular car's is 3,445cc. The entry for this car in the programme of the event reads as follows:

(Stuart L. Baxter, Linthwaite, Huddersfield)

First registered in Rawtenstall, and still in very

original condition, this Velox competed

regularly at Shelsley Walsh hillclimbs in the

1920's and as a course car at Silverstone as late

as 1960. Mr Baxter also has the original

log-book.

1912 Stoewer Open Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1992, starting in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's a 1912 Stoewer Open Tourer, and the only information about it in the programme of the event is that it was entered by Kevin Bann of Fence, Burnley, and that it ran in the class for cars from 1905 to 1918 of over 20hp RAC rating. The Stoewer company was founded by Emil and Bernhard Stoewer in Stettin (then in Germany) and produced cars from 1899 to 1940. At the end of the Second World War that part of Germany was occupied by the Russians who closed the factory down, and in 1945 Stettin became part of Poland and was renamed Szczecin. I've been unable to find out any more information about this particular car.

1912 Cadillac 30 Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991 starting in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's the 1912 Cadillac 30 Tourer of Roy Sherman of Billinge, and the only other information shown in the programme of the event is its registration number and that it's a 30hp car. The Cadillac 30 was introduced in 1909 and had a 226.2 cu in (or 3.7 litres) 4-cylinder inline engine. The engine size was increased to 255.4 cu in (4.2 litres) for 1910 and to 286.3 cu in (4.7 litres) for 1911 and 1912. The DVLA record says that the engine capacity is 4½ litres - and that the car hasn't been taxed since 2013.

On 7 April 2019 I showed a photograph of a 1911 Cadillac 30 Limousine that also competed in this 1991 event.

1898 Clement Voiturette

This car competed in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1990 and is pictured here in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.

It's an 1898 Clement Voiturette which was a regular participant in the Run, and the programme of the 1990 event had this to say about it:

This charming little yellow veteran is believed to be one of the oldest

cars regularly run in the north west, but previous outings have not been

without mishap. It broke its crank on the 1987 Manchester to Blackpool 

run and repeated the trick on the following year's London to Brighton.

Last year, however, it completed both the Manchester and Brighton Runs

successfully. Louise was, by the way, the youngest driver to compete in

each Run.

On 17 Sep 2015 I showed a photograph of the car at the 1986 Run where it was driven by Louise Williams' father Clive, who is standing beside the car in the above photograph.

1926 Vauxhall Tourer

This was one of the entrants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1987 starting in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's a 1926 Vauxhall Tourer and the programme of the event said this about it:

This white tourer is owned by Samuel Webster's Brewery and is today

being used by Piccadilly Radio, Manchester, as a base for live inserts

from the Run, for Mike Sweeney's Sunday morning Family Favourites

Show.

I don't know what model of Vauxhall this is. The DVLA record says that it has a 1,701cc engine, but I can find no Vauxhall model from the 1920s that had an engine of this capacity, nor one advertised as being a 17hp model.

1926 Morris Cowley

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1986, starting from the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.

It's a 1926 Morris Cowley, popularly known as the 'Bullnose' because of the rounded radiator cowling, and is seen here moving up to the start line. The programme of the event had this note about the car:

If this two-seater seems familiar, it could be because you've

glimpsed it on television - it has starred in Nanny, The

Mitford Sisters and The Good Companions, driven by

Judy Cornwell.

Although the programme note says that the car has a 1200cc engine, the 1926 Morris Cowley was offered with straight-4 engines of 1,548cc and 1,802cc capacity. To complicate matters even further, the DVLA say the capacity of this car's engine is 1,479cc.

Hudson Super 6

This car is pictured coming up to the start line in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester at the start of the Lancashire Automobile Car Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in May 1992.

It's a 1918 Hudson Super 6 and the only information about it in the programme of the event is that it was entered for the run by William West of Blackpool, Fylde. The Hudson Super 6 was produced by the Hudson Motor Car Company between 1915 and 1929 and has a 6-cylinder inline 4,736cc (289 cu in) engine producing 76 hp.

Cadillac 30 Limousine

This was one of the participants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991 and is pictured in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the run.

It's a 1911 Cadillac 30 Limousine, a car that was based on the 1907 Model G, and was produced from 1909 to 1911. The 1911 model had a 286.3 cu (4,692cc) engine. The programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

Imported from a San Francisco museum last August, this "Open Drive" Cadillac has four separately cast cylinders, each with its own copper water jacket. It sports Fisher Coachwork, and is driven today by William Ellam.

Singer Junior

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run starting from the Exchange Station car park in Manchester in June 1990.

It's a 1930 Singer Junior which was entered for the run by Alan German from Cleveleys. The Junior was in production from 1926 to 1935 and had a 4-cylinder inline 848cc engine. A note about the car in the programme of the event said this:

1911 Belsize Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run, starting at the Exchange Station car park in Manchester, in May 1987.

It's a 1911 Belsize Tourer and the programme of the event had this information about it:

This maroon and black five-seater was bought

new by W.B.White of Colne. Manchester-made

rarity, it has a twin-cam side-valve engine, and

was last seen on this Run in 1982.

Marshall and Company was probably Manchester's first car manufacturer, producing its first car at its factory in Clayton in 1897 which was badged as a Marshall. The company became Belsize Motors Limited in 1906 and continued producing cars until it ceased trading in 1925, having been in the hands of the receivers since 1923.
