Lister Jaguar

In October 1965 a group of American drag racers came to Britain on an exhibition tour organised by the National Hot Rod Association in conjunction with the British Drag Racing Association, repeating their visit of the previous year,  and one of the events was held on the runway of RAF Woodvale near Southport. Here's one of the photographs I took there that day.
I don't recall having a programme at this meeting so I don't know who entered the car for this event, but this is a 1958 Lister Jaguar, chassis BHL 105, that was originally an Equipe Nationale Belge car and took part, with a 3-litre engine, in the 1958 Le Mans 24 Hour race driven by Freddy Rouselle and Claude Dubois. The car retired early in that race after losing oil pressure, then continued to be raced by the Belgian team until it crashed during practice for the Helsinki Grand Prix in 1959. It went back to the Lister factory but was repaired elsewhere and passed through various owners until it went to Switzerland in 1986, but is now back in this country and has undergone an extensive restoration.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.
This car's a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, chassis #2563GT, and was driven by Lukas Hüni and Gary Pearson in the RAC Tourist Trophy race at this meeting. The 250 GT SWB was introduced by Ferrari at the Paris Motor Show in 1959 and has the 2,953cc V12 engine that powers all the Ferrari 250 models.

On 23 May 2014 I showed a photograph of this car, together with another 250 GT SWB, at this meeting.

Riley Brooklands

This car took part in the 2 hour long White House Memorial Pre-War Team Relay race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2007.
It's the 1929 Riley Brooklands of Neil Perkins with what the programme of the event says is a 1,089cc engine, though the Riley Nine engine of the Brooklands is usually quoted as being a 4-cylinder 1,087cc unit.

On 17 January 2015 I showed a photograph of this car, and other Rileys, that I'd taken at Oulton Park in 2015.

Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS

The two cars shown here both competed in the MicroProse Spirit of Speed race for Pre-War Sports Cars at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1999.
They are two examples of the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS, and both are 1929 models. UU 9125 is the car of John Guyatt, who partnered Colin Warrington in the race. It is chassis 0312905, which was originally owned by Dr J D Benjafield who is more famous for winning the 1927 Le Mans 24 Hour race with Sammy Davis in a Bentley. UU 79 was entered Mrs Tricia Pilkington and driven in the race by Alex and Erika Pilkington. This car, chassis 0312909, was originally owned by the Hon. Anthony Brunner and is the car in which Boris Ivanowsky won the 1929 Irish Grand Prix at Phoenix Park.

Fiat Abarth

This car took part in the 60 minute long U2TC Touring Cars race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2008.
It's the 1962 Fiat Abarth 1000 driven in the race by Joey and Stephen Beale. The car is based in the Fiat 600 with the 4-cylinder inline engine enlarged to 992cc. It has a front mounted radiator behind the unusual looking bumper bar.
This is the car at Britten's chicane during the race.

Bentley Jackson Special

I took this photograph at the Old Hairpin during the Vintage Seaman Trophy Race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.
The leading car is Stanley Mann's 1927 6½ litre Bentley Jackson Special - otherwise known as 'Old Mother Gun' - driven by Michael Rudnig. Following is another Bentley, the 1926/30 3/8 of Simon Llewellyn (a 3-litre chassis with an 8-litre engine), and the 1,260cc 1930 Morgan Super Aero of Duncan Wood.

On 26 February 2014 I showed photographs of 'Old Mother Gun' that I'd taken at Oulton Park in 1996.

Ford Pilot

This is one of the cars I photographed at the Footman James Classic Car Show Manchester at EventCity in September 2017.
It's a 1950 Ford Pilot, powered by a 3.6 litre Flathead V8 engine which was essentially the same engine used by the 1937/38 American Ford cars. The Pilot was in production from 1947 to 1951 and was the largest British Ford, alongside the smaller Anglia and Prefect models. It was replaced by the Ford Zephyr in 1951.

Talbot T26 SS

At the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998 the 50th anniversary of racing at the circuit was marked by a reunion of many of the cars that took part in the 1948 British Grand Prix at that first meeting. This was one of the cars taking part.
It's the 1937 Talbot T26 SS of Richard Pilkington that originally started off as a 4 litre Talbot T150, chassis #892935, but in 1938 was given a 4½ litre straight-6 engine and redesignated as a T26 SS with a new chassis number #90202. In 1946 Lord Selsdon became the owner and was given a reserve entry for the 1948 British Grand Prix, but didn't actually take any part in the event.

Friday's Ferrari

This car competed in the GT Challenge race at the Aston Martin Owners Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2018.
It's the 2007 Ferrari F430 Challenge of Tony Jones
The F430 Challenge was produced from 2007 to 2010 and has a 4,308cc V8 engine
Here's Tony Jones at Druids Corner in the morning qualifying session.....
.....and here during the race on the stretch between Britten's chicane and Hilltop.

Leyland Titan PD2A/27

This was one of the entrants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society's Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1998.
It's not listed in the programme of the event, but it's a Leyland Titan PD2A/27 with East Lancs H37/28R body and was provided new to St Helens Corporation Transport with fleet number 54 in May of 1967.

Jaguar C-Type

This was one of the cars taking part in the HGPCA Race for Pre-1959 Drum-Braked Sports Cars at the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association's International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.
It's Nick Rossi's 1952 Jaguar C-Type replica, one of several cars created by Peter Jaye - in this instance based on a Jaguar XK120. It has the 3,442cc straight-6 engine that powered the original C-Types.

Bugatti Type 59

This car was one of the display exhibits in the paddock at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
It's a replica of a 1934 Bugatti Type 59, constructed in the 1980s. The Type 59 used a modified Type 54 chassis with a straight-eight engine of 3,257cc that was an enlarged version of the Type 57 engine. It was the last of the 1930's Bugatti racing cars, and the next new Bugatti to be seen on a racetrack was the brief appearance of the Type 251 in the French Grand Prix of 1956.

On 4 December 2013 I showed a photograph of this car, and other Bugattis, at Donington Park in 2005.

Lola Mk 4

This is another of my Kodak Brownie 127 photographs from practice day for the British Grand Prix at Aintree in July 1962.
It's the Lola Climax Mk 4 spare car for the Bowmaker-Yeoman Racing Team, used by John Surtees and Roy Salvadori during practice. The Lola Mk 4, like several of the other teams, used the 1,496cc V8 Coventry Climax FWMV engine. Three of these cars were apparently built, so with John Surtees driving chassis BRGP42 in the race and Roy Salvadori chassis BRGP43, this is presumably BRGP41. John Surtees qualified in second place on the grid behind Jim Clark's Lotus 25 and those two drivers finished the race in that order. Roy Salvadori qualified in eleventh place on the grid but failed to finish the race, retiring after 35 laps with ignition problems.

Darracq

This car was one of the entrants in the Concours at the VSCC's Boulogne and Hawthorn Trophies Race Meeting at Oulton Park in June 2006.
The only information in the programme of the event is that it's Robert Hassell-Gibson's 1914 Darracq Sports with a 4 litre engine. The DVLA record says that it's a Darracq V14 and has a 2,366cc engine, but then it also says that the car is blue (I suppose it may have had a repaint since 2006) and that it was built in 1921, which is clearly not so.

Maserati A6GCM

This car competed in two rounds of the Shell Historic Ferrari Maserati Challenge series at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in June 2003.
It's John May's 1951 6-cylinder inline 1,985cc Maserati A6GCM, a car created for Formula 2 racing, but which competed in World Drivers Championship races in 1952 and 1953 when these were run to Formula 2 regulations. Only 12 examples of this model were built, several of which were later converted to Maserati 250F specifications, and this one is chassis #2033. On 18 July 2017 I showed a photograph of this car that I'd taken at Silverstone in July 2000.

Friday's Ferrari

This is one of the cars taking part in the Ferrari Racing Days event at Silverstone in September 2017.
It's the 3,902cc V8 engined Ferrari 488 Challenge of Henry Hassid, and is pictured here at Club Corner.

Lotus 99T

This was one of the cars on display at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1996.
It's a 1987 Lotus 99T, the car with which Ayrton Senna finished third in the World Drivers Championship. Renault had provided engines for Lotus since 1983, but after they pulled out of F1 at the end of the 1986 season the Lotus 99T was powered by a turbocharged 1,494cc V6 Honda engine. Ayrton Senna won three of the races that season, with four second and two third places. Senna's win in the Detroit Grand Prix was the last for the Lotus team, ending a run of victories that was started by Stirling Moss winning the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix in Rob Walker's Lotus 18.

The following season Ayrton Senna moved to the McLaren team, winning the World Championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991, and finishing in second place in 1989.

On 4 November 2013 I showed a photograph of this car at Donington Park in 2003.

Porsche 904/6

This car competed in the 90 minute long Historic Motor Racing News Gentlemen Drivers GT And Sports Endurance Race at the HSCC's Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2005.
It's Irvine Laidlaw's 1965 Porsche 904/6, and he shared the driving in this race with James Diffey. The original Porsche 904, introduced in 1964 had a 1,966cc flat-four engine but the 1965 car had a variant of the Porsche 911's flat-six engine of 1,991cc. A few cars were built with a flat-eight engine of 1,962cc based on the engine of the 1962 804 F1 car. Irvine Laidlaw's car is chassis 906-012 and was originally a Porsche works car that took part in the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hour race driven by Günter Klass and Dieter Glemser, but it failed to finish, retiring after 16 hours with a broken camshaft.

On 2 May 2015 I showed a photograph of Burkhard von Schenk's Porsche 904/6 that I had taken at Donington Park in 2004.

ERAs

I took this photograph from the inside of Coppice Corner at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in May 2001.
The photograph was taken during the Historic Seaman Trophy race and shows David Morris, driving his father Martin's ERA R11B 'Humphrey', passing Ludovic Lindsay in ERA R5B 'Remus' on the inside. Both cars are 1936 models and have the 2 litre supercharged 6-cylinder engine, and you can read the histories of these cars, together with all the other ERAs, on this website.

Tatra T87

On 24 December 2014 I showed a photograph of a Tatra T87 that I'd taken at Silverstone in 1997 and made a reference to the small fin on the back of the car that you couldn't see in that photograph. Here's a photograph I took of what appears to be the same car at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995 where you can see the car's fin.
The Tatra T87 was produced at Kopřivnice, in what was then Czechoslovakia, from 1936 to 1950 with a rear-mounted 2,969cc air-cooled V8 engine.

Standard Cheltenham

This car was one of the participants in the Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1991, organised by the Lancashire Automobile Club and starting at the Exchange Station car park in Manchester.
The only information about it in the programme of the event is that it's a 4 cylinder 20hp 1913 Standard Cheltenham Cabriolet, and it was entered by P. Dawson of Leyland, Lancs. I've found out via the Standard Register that it's a Standard Model O with an engine of 3,336cc.

Peugeot 148

This car took part in a 4 lap handicap race at the VSCC's Boulogne and Hawthorn Trophies Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 2005.
It's the 1913 Peugeot 148 of Clive Press, originally built with a 4,536cc 4-cylinder engine, but now with a 9,934cc 4-cylinder Hall-Scott A-7 aero engine.
Here's Clive Press at Britten's chicane during the race leading the 1928 Riley Brooklands of John Williams and the 1927 Alvis 12/50 SD Sports of Robert Glover.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car I've featured several times before, and it's seen here again at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2004.
It's Alexander Boswell's 1952 Ferrari 625, originally a 2 litre Formula 2 Ferrari 500, but fitted with a 2½ litre engine in 1954 and converted to a 625 to compete in the new 2½ litre Formula 1. By 2004 it had acquired a 3 litre sportscar engine, and this barchetta.cc record shows the history of #0482. There are three other Ferraris in this photograph, as well as the 1953 Maserati A6GCS of Carlo Vögele (no. 37): the yellow car in front of the 625 is Carlos Monteverde's 1958 Ferrari Testa Rossa (#0738TR), next to that is the 1958 Ferrari 250GT LWB Berlinetta TdF of Thomas Studer (#0909GT), and in front of that is Erich Traber's 1954 Ferrari 250 Europa GT Coupe (#0357GT).

Aston Martin Project 214

This car competed in the Coys of Kensington GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994.
It's Simon Draper's 1963 Aston Martin DP214, who shared the driving in the race with Gillian Goldsmith. 5 NBP was one of two Project 214 cars built (the other being completely destroyed in an accident at the Nürburgring in 1964) and was based on DB4GT chassis 0194/R with the 3,670cc straight-6 engine bored out to 3,750cc.

On 23 January 2017 I showed a photograph of this car at Silverstone in 1996.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL

I took this photograph at the Doune Motor Museum which we visited when on a family holiday in Scotland in August 1996.
It's a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, and the board in front of the car reads:

1957 Mercedes Benz 300SL
A car which has been in the one family
since new. Brought over from Germany
and run for short periods in this country.
It has clocked up only 28,500 ml since
new and still retains its original set of
tyres.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL produced from 1954 to 1963 and was a development of the W194 that won the 1952 Le Mans 24 Hour race. Its distinguishing feature was the gull-wing doors, and it was powered by the 2,996cc straight-6 M198 engine with Bosch fuel injection.

Stewart Ford SF01

This is one of the cars that I photographed at the Donington Park museum in September 2014.
It's a 1997 Stewart Ford SF01, the first car built by Stewart Racing (Jackie Stewart and his son Paul) to contest F1 races. After three not very successful years - the best result being a win by Johnny Herbert in the 1999 European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring - the team was sold to Ford who ran the cars as Jaguars until in turn being taken over by Red Bull in 2005.

On 6 May 2017 I showed a photograph of one of these Stewart Ford SF01 cars at Silverstone in 1998.

Lamborghini Espada

This vehicle was in one of the car parks at the Aston Martin Owners Club's meeting at Oulton Park on 12 May 2018.
It's a 1975 Lamborghini Espada
Three different Series of the Espada were produced from 1968 to 1978 and this is a Series III car, introduced in 1972
All versions of the Espada had a 3,929cc Lamborghini V12 engine
The V12 engine has six Weber carburettors and 24 valves operated by two chain-driven overhead camshafts on each bank of cylinders
The car has independent suspension with double wishbones, coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars
The Espada has a steel monocoque body and provides ample room for the four passengers
1,227 cars were built in the eleven years of production

Aston Martin DB2

This is one of the cars that was on display at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993 where the theme of the meeting was 'British Racing Green'.
It's a 1949 Aston Martin DB2, one of three prototypes that were entered in the 1949 Le Mans 24 Hour race. The other two cars had the same 4-cylinder inline 1,970cc engine as the earlier Aston Martin 2-litre Sports, later known as the DB1, but UMC 66 (chassis number LML/49/3) had the 6-cylinder inline 2,580cc Lagonda engine. David Brown had bought both the Aston Martin and Lagonda companies in 1947 and incorporated them as Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. UMC 66 was to be driven at the 1949 Le Mans race by Leslie Johnson and Charles Brackenbury, but retired with a broken water pump after just 6 laps.

Connaught A Type

This car competed in the Flockhart Trophy Race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2006.
It's David Wenman's 1952 Connaught A type, with a 4-cylinder inline engine based on the 1,767cc Lea Francis engine with the capacity increased to 1,960cc in line with the then current Formula 2 regulations. It's chassis number A4, and was at one time campaigned by the Ecurie Belge team.

On 7 March 2017 I showed photographs of this car taken at Oulton Park in 2005.
