1926 Jowett

This is a photograph that I took before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1980.

It’s a 1926 Jowett and the programme of the event had this note about the car:

 

72.     F. Barrett, Accrington, Lancs

            1926 Jowett, 2-cylinder, 6.9 h.p.

 Horizontally opposed twin cylinder engine, cone clutch, external brakes on rear wheels only. Restored in the late 1960s after standing in a field for over 12 years. The car was bought from a scrap yard in 1949 by a student for £15 and driven 5,000 miles through Europe and over the mountains of Norway and Sweden, almost to the Arctic Circle, returning with little trouble. Has been featured twice on BBC/TV. Today is the Jowett’s tenth Manchester/Blackpool run.

Willys Jeep

This is a photograph that I took in one of the car parking areas at the Vintage Sports car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in June 1975.

It’s a Willys Jeep, and it was quite common to see these vehicles  at meetings, particularly when bad weather was expected, to help people get their cars out when they became bogged down.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the Ferrari Racing Days meeting at Silverstone in September 2017.

It's a Ferrari F355 Berlinetta, one of 4,871 cars produced between 1994 and 1999. It has a 3,496cc V8 engine with twin overhead camshafts on each bank of cylinders and 5 valves per cylinder. The F355 replaced the Ferrari 348 and was itself replaced by the Ferrari 360. From 1997 the F355 became the first-ever road car to have the paddle operated F1 style gearbox transmission system.

2016 Aston Martin Vantage N430

This is a car that I came across in the Manchester United car park in January 2022.

It’s a 2016 Aston Martin Vantage N430, based on the standard Vantage model but with mechanical and styling changes. It’s powered by a 4,735cc V8 engine.

1930's ERA

This is a photograph that I took at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in June 1965.

It’s a 1930’s ERA, but unfortunately it has no race number (there is what looks like a faded ‘27’ on the front of the car, but that was a Frazer Nash at this meeting) and there were 7 ERA’s entered in the Historic Trophy Race. I'm told by people with a greater knowledge of  ERAs than me that this is the 1936 ERA R5B ('Remus') of the Hon. Patrick Lindsay.

1959 ERF

I took this photograph at Heaton Park, Manchester at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally in September 1988.

It’s a 1959 ERF and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

RDB 22 E.R.F. 6.6 GX Tractor. 1959. Entered by J.C. Wood, Bollington, Cheshire. 

New to John Stephens Limited of Heaton Mersey, this vehicle was in service until 1973 when it was withdrawn, being rescued for preservation in 1983.

Maserati 300S

I took this photograph in the paddock at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.

It's a Maserati 300S but didn't take part in any of the races that day, nor is it mentioned in the programme of the event and may well be a replica. The Maserati 300S has a 2,991cc 6-cylinder inline engine that was based on the 2½ litre unit of the 250F Grand Prix car with a longer stroke, and took part in the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1957.

1956 Tojeiro Jaguar

This is a photograph that I took in the paddock at the British Empire Trophy race meeting at Oulton Park in April 1959.

It’s the Ecurie Ecosse 1956 Tojeiro Jaguar that was driven in the race by Jock Lawrence, finishing in 13^th place.

1913 Peugeot 148

This is a photograph that I took at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

There had been a parade in the morning for 1906-1914 GP cars, and after the lunch break these cars came round the circuit delivering the marshals to their posts. There isn’t a list of the cars in the programme but this is the 1913 Peugeot 148 of Clive Press, originally built with a 4,536cc 4-cylinder engine and later had a 9,934cc 4-cylinder Hall-Scott A-7 aero engine.

Friday's Ferrari

This is one of the cars I photographed at the Ferrari Racing Days meeting at Silverstone in September 2017.

It's a 1990 Ferrari Testarossa and has a 4,943cc flat-12 Ferrari F113 engine. The Testarossa was produced from 1984 to 1991, with revised versions, the 512TR and F512M continuing until 1996 - almost 10,000 cars being built in total.

The DVLA say that the car currently has a SORN.

1972 Triumph GT6 MkIII

I took this photograph at a garage in Hyde in July 2023.

It's a 1972 Triumph GT6 MkIII and has a 6-cylinder inline 1,996cc engine. 40,926 GT6’s were produced between 1966 and 1973.

Lotus Elise

This is a car that I photographed in one of the car parks at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It’s a Lotus Elise, a car that was produced from 1996 to 2021with a choice of various engines of around 1.8 litres. The DVLA says it no longer has a record of this registration number, but the ‘V’ in the number indicates that it was registered between September 1999 and February 2000 which means that it’s Series 1 car.

1924 Star

This is a photograph that I took before the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club’s Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1979.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but it’s a 1924 Star, a car that was produced between 1922 and 1928 in the USA. The DVLA record says that it is taxed up to July 2027 and has a 1,945cc engine.

1969 Maserati Mexico

This is a photograph that I took at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.

It’s a Maserati Mexico, a car that was produced between 1966 and 1972 with a V8 engine of either 4.2 or 4.7 litres. The DVLA record says that this is a 1969 car with a 4,700cc engine.

1996 Volvo S40

I took this photograph at Druids corner during qualifying for the HSCC/TCRE Touring Car Challenge race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2018.

It’s Jason Minshaw in his 1996 Volvo S40 which has a 4-cylinder inline 2 litre engine.

1952 Leyland Comet

This was one of the entrants in the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally at Heaton Park, Manchester in September 1990.

It’s not listed in the programme of the event, but apparently it’s a 1952 Leyland Comet 90 Tractor Unit.

Friday's Ferrari

This car competed in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998.

It’s a 1956 Ferrari 860 Monza which has a Lampredi designed 3,432cc 4-cylinder inline engine and, in conjunction with the 290MM, was victorious in the 1956 World Sportscar Championship, winning three of the five races on the calendar, the 12 hours of Sebring, the Mille Miglia, and the Swedish Grand Prix. This car, #0604M, won the Sebring race that year driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Eugenio Castellotti. At this Silverstone meeting the car was driven by the then owner Nicolaus Springer. and a later owner of the car was Chris Evans.

1958 Cooper T45

This car was one of the competitors in a 10 lap race for Pre-1961 Racing Cars at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in August 1992.

It's Mike Haywood's 1958 Cooper T45 with what the programme of the event said was a 2 litre engine. The Cooper T45 was an improved version of the T43 and was used in both Formula One and Formula Two racing.

1936 Rover 12

This is a photograph that I took at a classic car show organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport in July 1987.

It’s a 1936 Rover 12 and has a 4-cylinder inline 1,496 cc engine. Over 22,000 of these cars were produced between 1934 and 1948.

1936/39 Delahaye 135

This car competed in four races at the Vintage Sports Car Club's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in June 1985.

 

The only information about it in the programme of the event is that it was the 1936/39 Delahaye of W.D.Fox and had a 3500cc engine. The Delahaye 135 was produced from 1935 to 1954 with a 6-cylinder inline engine, initially of 3,227cc, later increased to 3,557cc. I have been unable to find out any further information about W.D.Fox.
