Formula Ford Racing

 

This is a photograph that I took at the Knickerbrook chicane during the HSCC Historic Formula Ford race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

Leading is Gary Pearson in his 1971 Merlyn Mk20 followed by the 1971 Crossle 20F of Mike Whatley and the 1969 Lotus 61 of Simon Hadfield.

1959 Lotus Elite

This was one of the competitors in the HSCC Classic Sports Car Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's the 1959 Lotus Elite of George Hadfield which has a 4-cylinder inline 1,216cc Coventry Climax FWE engine. Over 1,000 of these cars were built between 1957 and 1962.

1960 Lola MkII FJ

This car competed in the Formula Junior Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's the 1960 Lola MkII Formula Junior car of Tony Steele and appears to have a 4-cylinder online Ford Kent 1,098cc engine. Formula Junior was introduced in 1959 as a class of racing where younger drivers could be introduced to single-seater racing. It ended when Formula 2 and Formula 3 were re-introduced to the racing scene for the 1964 season and Formula Junior has continued to be featured at historic racing events.

1958 Chevrolet Corvette

I took this photograph during the HSCC Historic Road Sports race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

The 1968 Chevrolet Corvette of Bernie Chodosh is following the 1969 Lancia Fulvia of Paul Howarth, the Lancia having a 1,298cc V4 engine and the programme of the event says that the Corvette has a 5.2 litre engine.

1959 Gemini Mk2

This car competed in the MRC Monoposto Formula Junior Championship Race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's the 1959 Gemini Mk2 of David Noble and has a 1,098cc engine. About thirty Gemini Mk 2s were built, four powered by Ford Cosworths and all others by BMC A Series engines.

1969 Lotus 61

This was one of the competitors in the HSCC Formula Ford Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1969 Lotus 61 of Kevin Stanzl and has a 1,599cc 4-cylinder inline Ford Kent engine that was originally developed for the 1959 Ford Anglia, and styling reminiscent of the Lotus 56 which contested the 1968 Indianapolis 500 race.

1971 Lola T300

This car competed in the HSCC Historic Formula Racing Car Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's John Harper's 1971 Lola T300 Formula 5000 car designed by Frank Gardner and John Barnard. It has a 5 litre Chevrolet V8 engine and is chassis HU12.

1966 Shelby GT 350

This car took part in the HSCC Historic Road Sports race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1966 Shelby 350 GT of Kevin Kivlochan and has the 289 cu in Ford Small Block V8 engine, shown as 4,727cc in the programme of the event. A total of 1,373 fastbacks were produced in 1966 and in order to help Shelby sales, Ford, the major shareholder of Hertz, persuaded the rental car giant to purchase 1,000 of these cars. The deal with the Hertz Corporation to offer these cars for rental was that after their rental-car lives were finished they would be returned to Ford, refurbished, and sold to the public as 'GT350H' models. Most Hertz cars were black with gold LeMans stripes and sill stripes, although a few were white with blue stripes. You can see on the sill of Kevin Kivlochan's car just behind the front wheel that it has the GT350H of the ex-Hertz hire cars.

1974 March 74S & 1974 Chevron B31

I took this photograph at Lodge Corner during the HSCC 2 Litre Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

Number 52 is the 1974 March 74S of Gregory Hart and has a 1,975cc Ford Cosworth BD series engine. The number 33 car is the 1974 Chevron B31 of Gerard MacQuillan which has a 1,998cc BMW M12 engine.

1963 Brabham BT6

This car competed in the Historic Formula Racing Cars Pre '65 Single Seater Championship Race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1963 Brabham BT6 of Chris Alford, originally built as a Formula Junior car with an engine with a maximum capacity of 1 litre, but according to the programme of the event had a 1,500cc engine. A total of 20 Brabham BT6 Formula Junior cars were built and they are listed on this website, but it doesn't indicate which of these cars was the one owned by Chris Alford.

1963 Marcos Fastback

This was one of the competitors in the Barley Construction Improved Road Sports Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Par in July 1992.

It's the 1963 Marcos Fastback of Bruce Orton and eighteen of these cars were produced in 1963, but the only information about the car in the programme of the event is that it has a 1,650cc engine.

1973 Chevron B26

This was one of the competitors in the RJB Mining Championship race at the HSCC Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995 where it competed in the '2 Litre Group 6 cars with Cosworth BD derived engines' class.

It's the 1973 Chevron B26 of Richard Evans, seen here at Lodge Corner during the race. The B26 was a replacement for the B23, and as well as revised suspension and a rear wing it had an aluminium monocoque tub instead of the spaceframe chassis of all the earlier Chevron sports racing cars. It had a 4-cylinder inline 2 litre Ford engine with an aluminium block, which had been designed by Brian Hart and re-engineered by Cosworth. Only 9 of these cars were made, mainly due to lack of demand because of the 1973 oil crisis in the UK.

Merlyn Racing Cars

I took the photographs of these two Merlyns at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992. Merlyn cars were produced by Colchester Racing Developments from 1960 to 1979, mainly for Formula Junior, Formula 3 and Formula Ford racing

This is the 1971 Merlyn Mk20 of John Pearson with a 1.6 litre Ford engine and built for Formula Ford racing. It competed in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford race at this meeting.

This car took part in the HSCC Historic Formula Racing Car Championship race which was open for Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 5000 cars. This Merlyn Mk21 of Alf Skeels competed in the Formula 3 Class and also had a 1.6 litre Ford engine.

1976 Lancia Fulvia Coupé 3

This car took part in the HSCC 70's Road Sports Championship race at the HSCC's Summer Race meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1976 Lancia Fulvia Coupé 3 of Dave Edwards and has a 1,298cc V4 engine driving the front wheels. The Lancia Fulvia was produced from 1963 to 1976 and was the last car to be introduced by Lancia before the company was taken over by Fiat in 1969.

Chevron

These three Chevrons took part in the RJB Mining Group 6 Championship and HSCC 2 Litre Championship race at the HSCC's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.  All the photographs were taken at Lodge Corner.

This is Roger Andreason's 1973 Chevron B23, shown in the programme of the event as having a 1,995cc engine, and competing in the 'Ford BD engined Group 6 cars' class.

Gerard MacQuillan's 2 litre 1974 Chevron B31 was driven in the 'BMW and Hart engines Group 6 cars' class.

Richard Budge's 2 litre 1975 Chevron B31/36 was driven by Mike Wilds and this car also competed in the 'BMW and Hart engines Group 6 cars' class.

Cooper Mk V

This car took part in the Historic Formula Racing Cars Pre '65 Single Seat Championship race at the HSCC's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1952 Cooper Mk V of Ian Scott which competed in the Formula 3 races of the 1950s where engines were limited to 500cc. The programme of the event says that this car's capacity was 499cc and I noted at the time that it's a JAP engine, but it doesn't say so in the programme.

There's a 500 Owners Association for owners of these cars and their website has details of all the cars that took part in this class of racing, including the Cooper Mk V.

Lancia Fulvia

This car competed in the QED Standard Road Sports Championship race at the HSCC's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's Paul Howarth's 1968 Lancia Fulvia with a 1,298cc V4 engine and is pictured at Lodge Corner during the race.

On 9 September 2017 I showed a photograph of a 1969 Lancia Fulvia that Paul Howarth drove at Oulton Park in 1995.

Lotus 51B

This was one of the entrants in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992.

It's Paul Stringer's 1968 Lotus 51B designed to run in the Formula Ford class of racing. Formula Ford was a first step onto the motor racing ladder, using a mildly tuned 1600cc Ford Cortina GT engine and ordinary road tyres that would prove less expensive than the existing Formula Junior and Formula 3 classes. About 218 of the cars were produced and this one is chassis #51B/FF/139.

Lola T70

This car took part in the RJB Mining Championship Race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1995.

It's the 1967 Lola T70 of Richard Dodkins which the programme of the event says has a 5,700cc engine. The Lola T70 was powered by a variety of engines but this seems to suggest that it has the Chevrolet small-block 350 cu in unit, and it appears to be the Lola T70 Mk3, chassis SL73/109, that was offered for sale here by Hemmings. The car is pictured above at Lodge Corner during the race.

Triumph TR3

I photographed this car at the HSCC's Summer Race Meeting at Oulton Park in July 1992 where it took part in the HSCC Classic Sports Car Championship race.

It's Mike Reason's 1959 Triumph TR3, a car sometimes known as a TR3A because the wider grille on the later models make it look a different vehicle to the original TR3. The original Triumph TR3 was produced between 1955 and 1957 with a 1,991cc straight-4 engine, and this later version from 1957 to 1962 with the 1,991cc engine, but with the option of a 2.138cc engine from 1959. The programme of the event says that this car has an engine of 2,187cc.
