1935 Brough Superior Dual Purpose

This is one of the cars I photographed in the Donington Park Museum in September 2014.

It's a 1935 Brough Superior Dual Purpose, one of only 19 cars that were produced. The chassis and 8-cylinder inline engine were supplied by Hudson, the capacity of the engine being 4,168cc, although the DVLA record shows it to be 4,250cc. H&H Classic Car Auctioneers sold this car in October 2013, which presumably is when it was acquired by the Museum.

1947 HRG 1500

This car was displayed by H&H Classic Car Auctioneers in the paddock at Donington Park at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting in May 2011.

It's a 1947 HRG 1500 with what the DVLA say is a 1,496cc engine. The HRG 1500 was produced between 1938 and 1956, 112 cars in all, and it was initially powered by a 1½ litre Singer 12 hp SOHC 1,525cc engine. The last 12 examples of the HRG 1500 had the Singer SM 1,497cc engine, so as JM 7075 does not appear to have been one of those last few cars built the engine seems to have been changed at some point for one of the Singer SM units - if the DVLA record is correct. The HRG Association was formed in 1960 for the benefit of HRG Owners. At the H&H car auction in June 2011 this car, chassis W123, apparently sold for £49,500.

Lagonda 2.6 Litre Drophead Coupe

This car was in the paddock at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in May 2011.

It's a 1952 Lagonda 2.6 Litre Drophead Coupe, one of 510 4-door saloon and 2-door coupe versions of the car that were produced between 1948 and 1953. At the time of its introduction the 2.6 litre was the only British car to have independent suspension, with coil springs at the front and torsion bars at the rear, and the 2,580cc straight-6 engine was the basis of the engines used to power the 1950s Aston Martin models.
This particular car was offered for sale by H&H Classic Car Auctioneers in October 2014.

Brough Superior SS100

When I attended the SeeRed meetings at Donington Park there was usually a display by H&H Auctioneers publicising a forthcoming auction with a display of vehicles. This was one of the vehicles shown at the SeeRed meeting in May 2011.

It's a 1938 Brough Superior SS100 built to special order with a 1,000cc JAP vee twin engine instead of the Matchless engine fitted to the standard Brough Superior SS100. It was offered for auction at the H&H Classics auction at Duxford on 21 September 2011.

Stutz DV32 LeBaron

I took this photograph at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

It's a 1933 straight-8 5 litre Stutz DV32 LeBaron Custom Sedan, chassis #DV-64-1595 and engine #33306. It was offered for auction by H&H Classics in 2009, but apparently failed to sell.

Bentley 3/8 litre

This car was in a team of Bentleys that took part in the 2 hour long VSCC Pre-War Sports Car Team Relay Race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2006.

It's the 1927 Bentley 3/8 litre of Adam Singer, and the original 3 litre Red Label Tourer is described in this history of the car when it was put up for auction in 2003 by H&H Auctioneers. It was apparently bought at that auction for a client by Stanley Mann Racing and was in need of a complete rebuild, during which it was given the 8 litre engine.

Lister Bristol

This was one of the cars taking part in the AMOC 50s Sports Cars race at the Aston Martin Owners Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2017.

It's Stephen Bond's 1955 1,991cc Lister Bristol 'Flat Iron', formerly John Horridge's Ecurie Bullfrog car.

The car was put up for auction in 2008 by H&H Auctioneers in a state of considerable disrepair.

Connaught L2

This car competed in the race for 1950s Sports Racing Cars at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting in September 2004.

It's Roger Seymour's 1948 Connaught L2, the first Connaught built, and was powered by a 1,767cc Lea Francis engine. The car was one of the auction lots in a sale by H&H Classic Car Auctioneers in July 2016, and here's how they described the car at that time.

Lotus 87

This was one of the cars taking part in the Grand Prix Masters F1 Cars 1966-1985 race at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.

This is David Coplowe's 1981 Lotus 87 that replaced the Lotus 81B after the Belgian Grand Prix for the remainder of the 1981 season and was driven by Nigel Mansell and Elio de Angelis. It appears to be chassis 87/4, advertised for sale here by H&H Classics.

McLaren M1B

Here's a car taking part in the HSCC Classic Racing Cars Race for the Retro Track and Air Trophy at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2004.

It's Chris Wilson at Foulstons chicane in his 1965/6 4.7 litre McLaren M1B. This car is chassis #30/09 which was put up for auction by H&H Auctioneers in 2013, and you can read what they had to say about it here. Lister Jaguar Coupe

This car was present at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998, but it didn't compete in any of the races.

It's the 1963 Lister Jaguar GT Prototype, and this Silverstone appearance is referred to in this history of the car by H&H Classic Auctions.

Connaught A Type

This car competed in the Cheshire Building Society Allcomer Race at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies Meeting at Oulton Park in June 1982.

It's Gerry Walton's Connaught A Type, chassis number A8, and you can read the history of the car in this description of the car issued by H&H Auctions when it was entered for auction in May 2002.

Talbot 105

This car competed in one of the races at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in May 2011.

It's Nicholas Pellett's 1931 Talbot 105, one of four cars (GO 51, GO 52, GO 53 & GO 54) campaigned by the Fox & Nicholl team in 1931 and 1932, finishing in 3rd place in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1932. The car was sold in November 2006 by H&H Classic Car Auctions, in preparation for which they produced this history of the car.

AC Ace

This car competed in the race for 1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

It's the 1955 AC Ace of John Arnold, previously campaigned by Ken Rudd's racing team and when H&H Classic Car Auctioneers had it up for sale in 2008 they produced this history of the car. The AC Ace was developed from the Tojeiro Bristol of Cliff Davies and this is one of the early cars, fitted with a 2 litre AC engine while later cars had a quicker Bristol unit fitted. Ken Rudd's team adapted the 2.6 litre Ford Zephyr engine for use in the AC Ace, but not many of those cars were built before Carroll Shelby had the idea of putting a big Ford V8 engine in the car which became the AC Cobra.

Piper GTT

This car took part in the AMOC Lighthouse Anglo-American Thoroughbred Challenge race at the Aston Martin Owners Club Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 2002.

It's Peter Bremner's 1970 Piper GTT, a car which was offered for auction by H&H Auctions in July 2008, though the programme of the Oulton Park race shows an engine capacity of 1600cc instead of the 1700cc shown in the auctioneers' description of the car. The Piper Sports & Racing Car Club keeps track of the surviving Piper cars.

Bugatti Type 50

This car was entered in the VSCC Bill Phillips Trophy Race at the Silverstone Historic Tribute 2004 meeting in June of that year.

It's a 1931 Bugatti Type 50 Le Mans, driven in the race by Mike Preston, and you can read about it in this history of the car as told by H&H Classic Car Auctions when it was put up for auction in 2002.

Alta Voiturette

This car participated in the race for the Historic Seaman Trophy at the Richard Seaman Historic Trophies meeting at Donington Park in June 2003.

It's a 1938 Alta Voiturette and was driven in the race by Martin Redmond. The programme of the event said this about the Alta entries:

The two Altas, that of David Baldock driven by Paul Jaye (121) and the other of Martin Redmond (4), can always be expected to challenge the rest. The Alta with its very advanced chassis with all independent suspension was designed and built by Geoffrey Taylor in a small workshop in Tolworth, southwest of London.

It looks as if this particular car was the subject of an H&H auction in July this year, but didn't sell.

Lister Bristol

I saw this car in the paddock at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in June 2008 in a display of vehicles by H&H Classic Car Auctions and recognised it as one I'd seen racing in the late 1950s.

The programme of the event included a notice of a forthcoming auction at Buxton which was to include this car and contained this brief description of its history:

'1955/1957 Lister Sports Racer

This Lister began life with a Riley engine and was entered for the 1955

Bol D'Or 24-hours Grand Prix  de  Paris.  It  was  converted  to  Bristol

power the following year and raced at national and international level

before crashing heavily at Snetterton in July 1957.  Thereafter, the  car

was rebuilt  by  the  Works  with  new  'flatiron'  bodywork.  The  Lister

has been in the current  ownership  since  August  1969  but  is  offered

for sale as a restoration project (Bristol engine and gearbox included).

Estimate: £50,000 - £70,000.'

AC Greyhound

On 3rd March 2015 I showed a photograph of two cars on the AC Owners Club stand at the Northern Classic Car Show at Belle Vue Manchester in September 1986. Also visible was the rear end of another car, and that car is pictured below.

It's a 1961 AC Greyhound, and the brochure of the event said this about the car:

'AC's brief foray into the 4-seater GT market is represented by Graham Howell's 1961 Greyhound, notable for spending its first three years with the British Embassy in Switzerland. Now fitted with the 2.2 litre version of the Bristol engine, it was a class winner at the club's recent Annual Concours.'

This car was offered in an auction by H&H Classics in September 1998.

Bugatti Type 57

This is a car brought along by H&H Classic Auctions to the VSCC SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in May 2008.

It's a 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Sports Saloon and it appears that it was sold at auction for £143,000
