1952 Lancia Aurelia B20

This car took part in the HSCC Pre ‘60 Historic Sports Car Championship Race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic race meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1952 Lancia Aurelia B20 of Tim Burrett. The B20 Series I car was introduced in 1951 with a 1,991cc V6 engine, followed by the Series II car, 721 of which were produced between 1952 and 1953 and which had a more powerful version of the same engine. The programme of the event says that this car has the 2,451cc V6 engine that was only introduced with the Series III car in 1953.

1950 Kieft F3

This was one of the competitors in the Formula 500 class in the Lenham Storage Formula Junior Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club’s Spring Historic Race meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It’s the 1950 Kieft of Malcolm Carter, Kieft being one of the most successful of the 500cc Formula 3 manufacturers alongside Cooper. There's a thriving 500 Owners Association with details of lots of the cars that have competed in 500cc racing since it started in 1946. In the background are two cars that took part in the same race, both of them Formula Junior cars. Number 4 is the 1960 Lola FJ Mk 2 of Josie Tolhurst and number 17 the 1961 Gemini Mk 3A of Bill Burrows.

1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk I

I took his photograph at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's a 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk I and has the 2,580cc version of the 6-cylinder inline Lagonda engine. The Aston Martin DB2/4 replaced the DB2 and was in production from 1953 to 1957, first with the 2,580cc version of the engine which was replaced by a larger 2,922cc engine in October 1954. This car is chassis LML/516 and it has since been repainted in the traditional Aston Martin metallic green colour.

Chevron B8

These two Chevron B8s were entered in the HSCC Atlantic Computers 2 Litre GT Championship race by Team Lazerlink at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

The one on the left is a 1967 car and was driven in the race by Tim Goss and on the right this 1968 car was driven by Richard Dodkins. A total of 44 Chevron B8s were built powered by different 4 cylinder 2 litre engines including Ford Cosworth FVA, BMW F10 and  Coventry Climax FVF.

 

1959 Rejo Mk IV

This was one of the competitors in the HSCC Pre '60 Historic Sports Car Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's David Methley's 1959 Rejo Mk IV and has a 4-cylinder inline 1,098cc Coventry Climax engine. The name 'Rejo' was formed from the initials of the designers Rod Easterling and Jim Osborn who produced the MkI, MkII and MkIII one-off models before producing the MkIV which was built to comply with Appendix C regulations.

1969 Brabham BT30

This car competed in the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987 and is seen here at Lodge Corner during the race.

It's the 1969 Brabham BT30 of Andrew Fellowes, chassis BT30/8,  with what the programme of the event says was a 1,598cc engine. The BT30 was built as a Formula 2 car when the capacity limit was set at 1,600cc and was usually powered by a 4-cylinder inline 1,599cc Ford Cosworth engine. It was originally bought by the Irish Racing Cars team of Mick Mooney where it was driven by Tommy Reid.

1966 Crosslé C9S

This car competed in the HSCC Atlantic Computers 2 Litre GT Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the 1966 Crosslé C9S of James Hunt (not that one!) which the programme of the event  says had a 1600cc engine. probably one of the three built in 1966 with a 1,557cc Ford Cosworth twin-cam engine.

1960 Cooper T53

This car competed in the HSCC Pre '65 Historic Grand Prix Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's shown in the programme of the event as John Harper's 1960 Cooper F1 car with a 2,496cc engine. The car was built by John Harper in the early 1980s from remains said to have been Arthur Owen's British Hillclimb Championship winning Cooper T53, and it may be chassis F2-5-60, the car that Bruce McLaren drove in the 1960 Formula 2 season.

1965 Lola T70 Spyder

This car took part in the HSCC Atlantic Computers Historic GT Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1965 Lola T70 Spyder of Colin Parry-Williams which the programme of the event says has a 5 litre engine. It's the former John Mecom Racing Zerex Special, chassis SL70/13 and you can read William I'Anson's history of the car here.

1966 Lola T70 MkIII

This was one of the competitors in the HSCC Atlantic Computers Historic GT Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1966 Lola T70 MkIII of Terry Smith, chassis SL71/23, originally a MkII car and raced in hillclimbs by Phil Scragg with open wheels and cycle fenders. Later went to Tony Harrison, Brian Classic and David Preece, then to Terry Smith who rebuilt the car with MkIII bodywork. The programme of the event shows the engine to be 5,000cc, but the DVLA record (which shows the car is untaxed since 1993) says that the engine capacity is 4,700cc.

1971 McLaren M19A

This car took part in the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the Otford Group's 1971 McLaren M19A, and was driven in the race by James Wallis. The car was designed by Ralph Bellamy with a 2,993cc V8 Ford Cosworth DFV engine and was campaigned by the McLaren team in the 1971 and the first three races of the 1972 season. In the 1971 season the car was plagued with reliability problems and finished in sixth place in the World Constructors' Championship with Denny Hulme the most successful driver, finishing in thirteenth place in the World Drivers' Championship with two fourth places, a fifth and a sixth. In 1972 Denny Hulme was again the leading McLaren driver with a second place in Argentina then a win in South Africa in the first two races before driving the McLaren M19C at Monaco and for the rest of that season. He finished in third place in the World Drivers' Championship that season behind Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart.

1971 March 701

I photographed this car at Deer Leap during the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the 1971 March 701 of Brian Tyler with a 2,993cc V8 Cosworth DFV engine, and is chassis #701-11. March Engineering was started in 1969 by Max Mosley, Alan Rees, Graham Coaker and Robin Herd, 'March' being formed using the initials of their names Mosley, Alan Rees, Coaker, Herd. The 701 was their first Grand Prix car, designed by Robin Herd, and eleven were built, three as the March Team's cars and eight for sale to customers. In the 1970 season Chris Amon and Jo Siffert drove the works cars, Chris Amon finishing in eighth place in the World Drivers' Championship but Jo Siffert didn't manage to finish in a points-scoring position in any of the thirteen races that counted towards the Championship. The most successful of the March drivers was Jackie Stewart who drove a March 701 for Ken Tyrrell's team for the first ten races until the Tyrrell 001 was available from the eleventh race onwards. Jackie Stewart finished in fifth place in the Championship, winning the Spanish Grand Prix and gaining two second place and a third place finish, all with the March 701, and retiring in the three races with the Tyrrell 001 - although he did take pole position with the car in its first race, the Canadian Grand Prix.

1968 Surtees TS5A

This car contested the Formula 5000 Class in the Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1968 Surtees TS5A, chassis #TS5A/007 of Jon Reakes, originally a Team Surtees car raced in the USA by David Hobbs in 1970. In 1971 it returned to the UK where it was leased to French driver Hervé Bayard  who competed in two races in the UK with the car, which then had a Chevrolet engine. At the end of that year it went to South Africa where it was given a Ford engine and remained there till at least 1974. By 1987 it had returned to the UK where it was acquired by Jon Reakes, and at some time between 1987 and 1992 the colour of the car was changed from blue to red.

On 1 February 2017 I showed a photograph taken in 1995 of the car at Oulton Park in its new red livery.

Brabham BT30

This car competed in the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

Cooper Bristol T23

This car competed in the HSCC Pre '65 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

It's the 1953 Cooper Bristol T23 (or MkII) of Graham Burrows and is powered by a 1,971cc straight-6 Bristol engine based on the one in the pre-war BMW 328. The original Cooper Bristol was designed as a Formula 2 car, but found itself involved in Grand Prix racing in 1952 and 1953 when the World Championship was run to Formula 2 regulations.

Chevron B19

This car took part in the HSCC Atlantic Computers Historic GT Championship race at the HSCC's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the North Downs Instruments 1971 Chevron B19 and was driven in the race by Tony Gordon. The Chevron B19 was designed to run in the European 2-litre Sports Car Championship and was powered by a 1,790cc 4-cylinder inline Cosworth FVC engine.

McLaren M8D

This car competed in the HSCC Atlantic Computers Historic G.T. Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the Haslemere Sports Cars Ltd's 5-litre 1970 McLaren M8D, driven in the race by John Foulston. The car was designed for the Canadian-American Challenge Cup Series (or Can-Am) that was contested from 1966 till 1987.

On 22 June 2016 I showed a photograph of this car, and also of other McLarens, at the HSCC meeting at Oulton Park in 1987.

Car and Helicopter

This is a photograph I took at the HSCC Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987.

The car's a Jaguar C-type, possibly a replica, and the helicopter appears to have the registration G-TOFF, If that is so, it's an Aerospatiale AS355F1 Ecureuil II, then owned by Atlantic Computer Leasing and since then re-registered several times, now bearing the registration G-OHCP.

Lotus 15

The Spring Historic Race meeting at Oulton Park in May 1987 organised by the Historic Sports Car Club included a race for the Pre '60 Historic Sports Car Championship. One of the cars that took part was this 1959 Lotus 15.

The Lotus 15 was the successor to the Lotus X and you can read about the car in this Wikepedia article. According to the Historic Lotus Register 27 of these cars were built but details of the individual cars don't seem to be available.

The car's entrant is shown in the programme of the meeting as P.R.W. Hillingdon Motors and the driver as Peter Walker

Here's Peter Walker in the race just going into Lodge Corner
