1971 McLaren M19A

I took this photograph at Old Hall Corner during practice for the 1972 Gold Cup race at Oulton Park in May 1972.
It's Denny Hulme in his 1971 McLaren M19A, chassis M19A/1, and he qualified for the race in second place to Peter Gethin's BRM P160B, though he won the race the following day ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus 72 and Tim Schenken's Surtees TS9. The McLaren M19A was designed by Ralph Bellamy and was powered by the 2,993cc V8 Cosworth DFV engine. In the 1972 World Drivers' Championship Denny Hulme finished in third place to Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart, winning just the South African Grand Prix, McLaren also finishing in third place in the World Constructors' Championship.

1970 Lotus 72

The two cars in this photograph competed in the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.
The number 72 car is a 1970 Lotus 72, chassis 72/R4 and beneath it is a 1971 McLaren M19A, chassis M19A/1, both of which belonged to the then owner of the Oulton Park racing circuit (and Brands Hatch and Snetterton), John Foulston, who drove the McLaren in that race whilst his wife Mary drove the Lotus. The Lotus 72 was designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe and the McLaren M19A was designed by Ralph Bellamy, both cars having the Ford Cosworth DFV 2,993cc V8 engine. The Lotus was the more successful of the two cars, Jochen Rindt winning the World Driver's Championship in 1970  and Emerson Fittipaldi  in 1972, and Lotus winning the World Constructor's Championship in 1970, 1972 and 1973. The McLaren's best results were a third place in the Driver's Championship in 1972 for Denny Hulme and a third place in the Constructor's Championship the same year for McLaren.

1971 McLaren M19A

This car took part in the HSCC Seldon Pre '71 Single Seater Championship race at the Historic Sports Car Club's Spring Historic Race Meeting at Oulton Park in May 1986.

It's the Otford Group's 1971 McLaren M19A, and was driven in the race by James Wallis. The car was designed by Ralph Bellamy with a 2,993cc V8 Ford Cosworth DFV engine and was campaigned by the McLaren team in the 1971 and the first three races of the 1972 season. In the 1971 season the car was plagued with reliability problems and finished in sixth place in the World Constructors' Championship with Denny Hulme the most successful driver, finishing in thirteenth place in the World Drivers' Championship with two fourth places, a fifth and a sixth. In 1972 Denny Hulme was again the leading McLaren driver with a second place in Argentina then a win in South Africa in the first two races before driving the McLaren M19C at Monaco and for the rest of that season. He finished in third place in the World Drivers' Championship that season behind Emerson Fittipaldi and Jackie Stewart.

McLaren M19A

This car was on the grid for the Grand Prix Masters race at the Silverstone Historic Tribute meeting in June 2004.
It's David Clark's 1971 3 litre V8 Cosworth DFV-engined McLaren M19A. This is chassis 02 and it was driven by Denny Hulme in the 1971 racing season and continued to be used by the team for the first part of the 1972 season until superseded by the M19C.
