Guernsey Old Car Club

Yesterday I showed photographs of two Ferraris that I had taken at the Guernsey Classic Vehicle Show that was held at Saumarez Park on 16 June 2019. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Guernsey Old Car Club and Guernsey Post released a set of six stamps to mark the occasion, each stamp depicting a car belonging to one of the members of the club. All six cars depicted were at the Classic Vehicle Show and I took the opportunity to photograph each one.

1898 Delahaye Type 2, a twin-cylinder 2.2 litre 6hp vehicle.

The 1911 Delage Type X has a 2,983cc 4-cylinder inline engine and is one of four cars built by Louis Delage to take part in the 1911 Coupe des Voitures Légère race at Boulogne, one of the cars winning the event.

A 1936 Riley Kestrel 12/4 with a 1,496cc 4-cylinder inline engine based on the Riley 9 unit.

A 1952 Bentley Mk VI with a 4¼ litre 6-cylinder inline engine and was named the 'standard steel sports saloon', being the first Bentley to be given a body at the factory instead of the chassis being sent to a coachbuilder of the customer's choosing.

A 1956 Triumph TR3 with the 1,991cc 4-cylinder inline engine that also powered the Standard Vanguard. From 1959 there was also the option of a 2,138cc engine.

A 1966 Morris Minor Traveller with a 1,098cc 4-cylinder inline engine.

I would have thought that Guernsey Post would have given the owner of each of the cars a set of the stamps but I was told by the wife of the owner of one of the cars that they had not done so, which seems to me to be a little mean of Guernsey Post.

Guernsey, April 2016

Back in Guernsey last week to see our grandchildren again and to spend some time looking after them. Here are some of the photographs I took during our stay.

Here's Eliza at the wheel of one of the cars in the garden. She usually laughs and smiles a lot, but obviously takes her driving very seriously.

On the Wednesday morning we walked through Saumarez Park where there was this colourful display of flowers.

Back to Saumarez Park on the Thursday with our grandchildren and their daddy. Here's Edward on his scooter.....

Edward in the playground which has recently been subject to a lengthy and expensive upgrade.

Part of the upgrade was the building of a 95ft long pirate ship, and here's Eliza exploring the results.

Children can share this particular swing, but neither Edward nor Eliza seem to be too sure about it.

Edward tried this climbing frame, but he's probably not big enough yet to be able to use it with confidence. And he's probably not wearing the ideal footwear either.

We paid a visit to the Shipwreck Museum at Fort Gray (known locally as the 'Cup and Saucer') on the Friday, but the day had started off very misty and when we arrived there we could barely see it from the road. It hadn't improved all that much when we finally left.

In the garden again on the Saturday, and Eric the cat had found a baby slow worm which we had to rescue from him.

On the Sunday morning we visited the Bluebell Woods on the south-east of the island.

The woods are quite extensive and cover the cliffs on this part of the island, so some of the paths involve steep climbs. But as it's on the coast you can turn a corner and see wonderful views across Soldiers' Bay.

We came home on the Sunday afternoon, and our grandchildren came to the airport to see us off. Edward lent a hand with the cases.

Guernsey, December 2015

Another short visit to Guernsey last week for our grandson Edward's third birthday. Both he and granddaughter Eliza were their usual selves.....

On the Thursday we had Edward for a large part of the day.....

.....we went for a walk in Saumarez Park in the afternoon.....

.....where someone was feeding the ducks.....

.....so Edward had to give them the remains of his lunch.

On the Saturday Edward had his birthday party and his mummy had made him a lovely Thomas the Tank Engine cake.

Very clever of mummy, but Eliza seemed to be wondering what clever mummy was doing wearing a donkey on her head.....

The party was rounded off with a game of 'Pass the Parcel'.

The next day after lunch at Crabby Jack's at Vazon we managed to have a walk on the beach for the only time during our stay there, although it was cold and dull. That didn't seem to bother Edward and Eliza though.....

.....they both seemed to enjoy running around in their wellies.

Guernsey, July 2015

Our Granddaughter Eliza was a year old on 28th July, so we paid another short visit to Guernsey to wish her a Happy Birthday. We started off by looking after Grandson Edward for the day on the Thursday and took him first to Saumarez Park where the Guernsey Royal Agricultural Show was being held.

We later walked from the Park to the beach at Cobo where Edward and Grandma went to collect shells and Edward had a paddle in the sea.

The next day involved a shopping trip to St Peter Port where they were holding the two week long Town Carnival.

There were musicians and other entertainers at various spots around the town centre and the Tropikal Vizions Steel Band seemed to be a popular attraction outside Boots on Le Pollet when we walked past.

On the Saturday I went with Paul and Edward into St Peter Port again and Edward wanted to see the big cruise ships anchored outside the harbour.

There were two ships there that day.....

.....Magellan, operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages.....

.....and Silhouette, operated by Celebrity Cruises.

On the Sunday we spent the morning with Paul & Anna and the children, and Eliza opened some early birthday presents before we all went out to lunch and then to Grandpa's house in the afternoon for a birthday party.

The weather improved as the day went on and the children were able to go into the garden and play, or sit with Grandpa.

Monday came all too soon and Edward and Eliza came with Daddy to the airport to say goodbye to Grandma (and Grandad of course).
