Lotus Elise

This is a car that I photographed in one of the car parks at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It’s a Lotus Elise, a car that was produced from 1996 to 2021with a choice of various engines of around 1.8 litres. The DVLA says it no longer has a record of this registration number, but the ‘V’ in the number indicates that it was registered between September 1999 and February 2000 which means that it’s Series 1 car.

1956 MG Magnette ZB

This is a photograph that I took in one of the car parks at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It’s a 1956 MG Magnette ZB and has a 4-cylinder inline 1,489cc engine. 18,524 of these cars were built between 1956 and 1958.

2018 Porsche 991 Carrera GTS

I took these photographs in the Manchester United car park in May 2019.

It’s a 2018 Porsche 991 Carrera GTS which is a seventh generation model of the Porsche 911 and has a 2,981cc flat-six engine.

1971 Gilbern Invader

This is a photograph that I took at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It’s a 1971 Gilbern Invader, 603 of which were produced between 1969 and 1973. It has a 2,994cc V6 Ford Essex engine.

2004 Buick Rainier

This is a photograph that I took in September 2019 – I don’t remember taking it but it looks like it was in a car park near to Tameside Hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne.

It’s a 2004 Buick Rainier, an SUV vehicle that was produced from 2004 to 2007 and had a choice of a 6-cylinder inline 254 cu In (4,160cc) engine, or a V8 with a capacity of 325 cu In (5,328cc). The DVLA record says that the ‘vehicle details could not be found’.

BMW Z4 M40i

Here are two photographs that I took in the car park at Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground in September 2019.

It’s a BMW Z4 M40i which was introduced in 2018 and has a 6-cylinder inline 2,998cc turbocharged engine.

1950 Bristol 400

I took these photographs at the Vintage Sports Car Club’s meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's a 1950 Bristol 400, one of 487 cars built between 1947 and 1950. After the Second World War the Bristol Aeroplane Company set up a car division, which later became Bristol Cars, and this was the first car they produced. AFN Ltd had reached an agreement with BMW in 1934 to import their cars, and to build and market them in the UK as Frazer Nash BMWs, and Bristol acquired a licence from Frazer Nash to base their car on the box-section frame of the BMW 326 and the engine of the BMW 328. The Bristol's engine was a slightly modified version of the 328's 6-cylinder inline 1,971cc unit.

2018 McLaren 570S Coupé

This is a car that I spotted on the Manchester United car park at Old Trafford in October 2019.

It’s a 2018 McLaren 570S which has a twin turbocharged 3,799cc V8 McLaren M838T engine and was produced from 2015 to 2021.

1969 Ford Mustang

This is a photograph that I took at the local Shell filling station in Hyde in September 2019.

It’s a 1969 Ford Mustang, a First Generation car which was produced from 1964 to 1973. It has the 6-cylinder inline 200 cu in (3,277cc) engine.

Aston Martin DB11

These are photographs that I took on the Manchester United car park at Old Trafford in May 2019.

It’s an Aston Martin DB11, a car that was produced from 2016 to 2023 with a choice of 2 engines – an Aston Martin 5.2 litre twin turbo V12, or a Mercedes Benz 4 litre twin turbo V8.

The DVLA record now says that the vehicle details could not be found.

1964 Elva Courier

This is a photograph that I took during the Equipe GTS race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's the 1964 Elva Courier of Rob Cobden, one of about 400 of the MkI and MkII Couriers produced between 1958 and 1961. Various different engines were used to power the Courier, the most common being the Riley 1.5 or MGA unit, but Rob Cobden's car has the 1,498cc Kent engine from the Ford Cortina.

1937 Delahaye 135

I took this photograph at Knickebrook corner during a morning practice session at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's Malcolm Underwood in his 1937 Delahaye 135 which the programme of the event says has a 3,590cc engine. The Delahaye 135 was produced from 1935 to 1954 with a 6-cylinder inline engine, initially of 3,227cc, later increased to 3,557cc.

1958 Peerless

This car competed in the Equipe Pre-63 race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in 2019 and is pictured at the Knickerbrook chicane during the morning practice session.

It's the 1958 Peerless of Dan and Lucas Smith which was based on the running gear of the Triumph TR3 with the 4-cylinder inline 2,138cc engine and about 325 were produced between 1957 and 1960.

1938 ERA Parnell Challenger

I took this photograph at Druids Corner during one of the races at the Vintage Sports Car Club's Formula Vintage meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's Duncan Ricketts in the ERA Parnell Challenger which was conceived by Reg Parnell for the 1½ litre Formule Internationale which was expected to be introduced in 1941 - events in 1939 obviously stopped that from happening. It was apparently intended to be fitted with an MG engine, but its only appearance before the war was at Prescott in early 1939 when it had an ERA engine. After the war Reg Parnell fitted it with an 8-cylinder inline Delage engine, but lost interest in the project after acquiring a Maserati 4CL. It was driven by David Hampshire in a couple of events with the Delage engine in 1947 and more recently came into the ownership of Duncan Ricketts who restored the car with a supercharged 1,488cc ERA engine.

1966 Triumph GT6 Mk1

I took this photograph during the Equipe GTS race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's the 1966 Triumph GT6 MkI of Gethin Chislett and has the 6-cylinder inline 1,996cc engine. Triumph went on to produce a MkII then a MkIII, and 40,926 cars were built between 1966 and 1973.

1935/37 Railton LS Tourer

This car took part in two races at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's the 1935/37 Railton LS Tourer of Anthony Fenwick-Wilson and has an 8-cylinder inline 4,168cc Hudson engine.

1948 Alvis Goodwin Special

This was one of the competitors in the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy Race for Post-War Racing Cars at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's the 1948 Alvis Goodwin Special of Alex Simpson - I've not been able to find out much about the history of the car but it was built by the Goodwin brothers in 1948, apparently using the 6-cylinder inline  4,387cc engine that powered the Alvis Speed 25 in the late 1930s.

1989 TVR Tuscan Challenge

This car didn't take part in any of the races, but was in one of the public car parks at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's a 1989 TVR Tuscan Challenge and this note telling the history of the car was on the windscreen:

1925 AC/GN Cognac

This car competed in the Boulogne Trophy Race for Vintage Cars at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's the 1925 AC/GN Cognac  of Tony Lees which is one of several Specials that were constructed in the 1920s and 30s using the chassis of a GN Cyclecar and either an AC or a Frazer Nash engine. The car was built by a Mr S.A.Cohen and 'Cognac' is an acronym composed from the maker’s name –  Cohen, the fact that it had a GN chassis and an AC engine that gives CO-GN-AC. One long time owner was Ron Footitt and the subsequent owner was a good friend of his, Freddy Giles, who told this story of 'Ron's last race' in the programme of the 2005 VSCC meeting at Oulton Park:

Ron’s Last Race…….

‘Ron Footitt of Cognac Special fame, winner of umpteen trophies and five times winner of the Vintage Seaman Trophy Race at Oulton Park, died in November 1990 and wanted his ashes spread at the Cheshire circuit. Ron wanted me to own the Cognac, and when I bought it from him we had quite a conversation about scattering him on the circuit from the back of his car. I could not carry out his wishes last year – the VSCC didn’t go to Oulton and anyway I had broken his favourite toy. This year was different – the car was going well and we were at Oulton. At what point of the weekend, and where on the circuit and how was I to release the ashes? Testing on Friday? Practice session? NO – let Ron do his last Vintage Seaman. Going by the practice times on Saturday, then it seemed quite possible that the Combination of Cognac, self and Ron in a small leather bound box could win the race. It was not to be – young Majzub in a type 35B (breathed on, it is said by Ivan Dutton) who didn’t practice until Sunday morning, had beaten our best practice times of Saturday. Never mind – let’s not give up before we start! The Sunday weather didn’t start too well and soon we were into rain. The expert opinion of Martin Stretton was called for – how to drive Oulton in the wet. It was fast, it was slippery, Old Hall got more and more slippery as the race went on. Ron and I couldn’t live with Julian, but we were well ahead of Alex Boswell in the Bequet-Delage and then in the mirrors appeared the great giant-killer, Stu Harper in the Morgan. At one time I’m sure that we were welded together and then he made his move, that I couldn’t stop and he was past, only to lose it at Old Hall! I didn’t get past him and I’m sure Ron was kicking me! Anyhow we finished a creditable third and on the slowing down lap I let Ron out as we came up Deer’s Leap under the Dunlop Bridge and just after Knickerbrook. It had been arranged with the photographers for that to be Where, and How was from the box that had been with me for the race. Sorry Ron, we weren’t first home, but we all three enjoyed it nonetheless.’

1929 Frazer Nash Super Sports

I took this photograph at Druids corner during the 45th Bill Phillips Race for Standard & Modified Pre-war Sports Cars at the Vintage Sports Car Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2019.

It's Mrs Jo Blakeney-Edwards in a 1929 Frazer Nash Super Sports which has 4-cylinder inline 1,496cc engine. About 165 of these chain drive cars were built between 1925 and 1930, mainly with Anzani engines.
