1924 Rolls Royce

This was one of the cars that took part in a vintage car show and a run from Stockport to Matlock in July 1985 organised by car dealers Gordon Ford of Stockport.
It appears to be a Rolls Royce 20 Open Touring which should have a 3,127cc engine, but the DVLA record say that it’s a 1924 Rolls Royce with a 6,283cc engine. The only other model Rolls Royce produced in 1924 was the  40/50 Silver Ghost with either a 7,036cc or a 7,428cc engine.

1928 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer

This was one of the participants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1984.
It's a 1928 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer, chassis GXL65, which should have a 6-cylinder inline 3,127cc engine but the DVLA record says it is 3,164cc. The programme of the event had this note about the car:

138 1928 Rolls Royce Tourer,
        Reg. CK 9680 6-Cylinder 20 hp 3164cc
        (Philip McIvor, Barrowford, Nelson, Lancs.)
Originally purchased for Mrs. Yates, of Yates Wine Lodge fame, it was bought three years ago by Mr McIvor in Southampton and driven to Lancashire in 7 hours, and repainted before being used at his daughter's wedding.

1923 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer

This car took part in the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1990 and is pictured in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester before the start of the Run.
It's the 1923 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer of Major A. Pownall of Wilmslow with only this basic entry in the programme of the event:

1923 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer,
Reg:  VK 6701  6 cylinder  20 hp
(Major A. Pownall, Wilmslow, Cheshire)

The car also took part in the Run in 1992, however, when this additional information was given:

'The "smallest" Rolls of its day, the 20 Tourer cost £1,000 in chassis form. Rolls quoted a power figure of 53 bhp at 3000 revs. It was the first Rolls to have a detachable cylinder head.'

1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost

I took this photograph in the Exchange Station car park in Manchester in May 1992 of two cars waiting for the start of the Lancashire Automobile Club's annual Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run.
The nearest car is a 1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and the only information about it in the programme of the event is that it was entered by Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd. of St Helens, Merseyside. It appeared in several of the Runs around that time though, and in the 1987 Run this note was in the programme:

1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost,
Reg:  XR 6727  6 Cylinder  7428 cc
(Pilkington Glass Co. Ltd., St Helens.)
Found derelict in Aughton. Lancs, and was rebuilt by apprentices and artisans at the Eccleston Works, St Helens, and at King's Norton Works, Birmingham, with kind assistance from Rolls Royce at Crewe. Has completed more than 900,000 miles in its lifetime.

The car next to it is a 1923 Rolls Royce 20. and again the only information in the programme is that it was entered by A Pownall of Wilmslow, Cheshire. This car also took part in the 1987 Run, and this was the note about it in that programme:

1923 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer,
Reg:  VK 6701  6 cylinder  20 hp
(Major A. Pownall, Wilmslow, Cheshire)
The "smallest" Rolls of its day, the 20 Tourer cost £1,000 in chassis form. Rolls quoted a power figure of 53 bhp at 3000 revs. It was the first Rolls to have a detachable cylinder head.

Engines

I took these photographs of two car engines in June 1986 at the Exchange Station car park in Manchester which was the start point of the Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car run organised by the Lancashire Automobile Club.
All I'd written down for this was that it was a 1924 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer, but I didn't identify the specific vehicle. There was, however, only one such car listed in the programme of the event so it looks as if it is the car then belonging to a John McGlynn of Blackpool, and the programme said this about the car:

48     1924 Rolls Royce 20 Tourer,
          Reg: CA 7243 6 cylinder 20 hp 3142cc
          (John McGlynn, Blackpool)
Completely original Barker-bodied, barrel-sided,
dual-cowl tourer, in regular use in Blackpool,
completing about 6,000 miles a year. Featured
in the film Grand National Nights (1953).

For this one I'd just written that it was a 1929 Bentley 6½ litre, and again there was only one such car shown in the programme:

138     1929 Bentley 6.5 litre,
           Reg: UP 2224 6 cylinder 37.2 hp
           6500cc
           (William Loughran, Walmer Bridge,
           Preston)
This car is a previous winner of the prestigious
Kensington Gardens Concours, and also a
previous winner on this Run. It has been
owned and maintained by Mr Loughran and
his wife for the past six years.

There's some information about this car on www.vintagebentleys.org.
