1967 Ferrari 330P4

I took this photograph at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992 where there was a special display of Ferraris in the paddock numbered 1 to 32, and a page in the programme of the event gave details of each of the cars.
This is what the note in the programme said about the car:

'24  330 P4
Mid-engined V12; 4 litres; 450bhp at 8000; Twin ohc per bank; 3 valves per cylinder; Lucas fuel injection; all round independent suspension, double wishbones/coil springs. Final development of the 330 P series cars. Intended for use by the works teams they entered racing in the Daytona Continental 24 Hour race on February 4/5 1967. The two that were entered came 1st and 2nd. They proved to be the mainstay of the Ferrari effort in prototype racing that year but it was close run with Ferrari scoring 34 points to the 32 gathered by Porsche.'

The car was apparently built by David Piper using an engine and a collection of other parts sold to him by Enzo Ferrari together with a set of plans for the Ferrari 330P4 chassis, and he was allowed to give it the chassis number 900. It apparently has the body from 330P4 chassis 0860.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the RAC Tourist Trophy Race at Oulton Park in May 1965.
It's David Piper in his 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, which should strictly be called a 275 LM because it has the larger 3.3 litre engine instead of the 3 litre engine of the 250LM. The car is chassis number 5897 and it finished in third place in the race which was won by Denny Hulme in a Brabham BT8.

Friday's Ferrari

This car competed in the Pre-1972 Le Mans Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998.
It's Davis Piper's 1966 Ferrari 330 P2 which has a Gioacchino Colombo designed 3,967cc V12 engine. I don't remember who drove the car in the race - the programme of the event says 'to be nominated'.

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
It's the 1964 Ferrari 250LM, chassis 8165, of David Piper and was driven in the race by Chris Rea. The '250LM' should indicate a 3 litre engine, but since all but the first example of the model (which did have the 2,953cc V12 Colombo engine) had the 3,286cc version of that engine it should really be referred to as a 275 LM. The intention was for the 250LM to be homologated for the FIA's Group3 GT class so when the larger engine was fitted Enzo Ferrari insisted that the '250LM' should be retained to help with the homologation process.

Friday's Ferrari

David Piper drove this car in the Shell Ferrari Historical Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998 and is seen here leaving the pit lane during the morning qualifying session.
Listed in the programme of the event as a 1965 Ferrari 330 P2 with a 4 litre engine it looks more like the 330 P3 - David Piper's Ferraris are often difficult to identify, but I would guess that this car is chassis number 0844 or 0846.

This is a 1965 Ferrari 330 P2, and the note in the programme about this car reads as follows:

Continental, February 1965. In line with what had
happened in 1964 a 3.3 litre 275P2 version was also
available. Both models were used to gain the prototype
championships for Ferrari that year.'

The car then belonged to David Piper (and still does) and is chassis #0836.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph in the paddock at the at the Silverstone Historic Tribute meeting in June 2004.
It's David Piper's 1965 Ferrari 365 P2, #0836, originally built as a 330 P2 with a 3,967cc V12 engine, but converted to 365 P2 specifications with a 4,390cc V12 engine before it was acquired by David Piper in late 1965. This Silverstone meeting included a race for the 'European Sports Prototype Trophy Organised by Group4Racing' for which this car would have been eligible, but it is not listed in the programme of the event nor the table of results.

I photographed this car in the paddock at the Silverstone Historic Tribute meeting of June 2004, though it doesn't appear to have taken part in any of the races at that meeting.

Ford F3L

This car took part in the Pre-1972 Le Mans Cars Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997.
It's a 1968 Ford F3L - also known as a Ford P68 - which was designed by Len Bailey and built by Alan Mann Racing for them to compete in the Group 6 prototype class in the 1968 season. The car has a 2,993cc V8 Ford Cosworth DFV engine but proved to be very unreliable, not finishing in any of the races in which it took part in 1968. In 1997 the car was owned by David Piper and was driven at Silverstone by Andrew Fletcher.

Friday's Ferrari

This is one of the cars displayed at the 'Ferrari Feature' at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.
It's a Ferrari 330 P2, and this is what the programme of the event said about it:

22    330 P2
Mid-engined V12; 4 litres; 410bhp at 8200rpm; twin ohc
per bank; all round independent suspension by double
wishbones/coil springs. intended for use by the works
team, their first appearance in racing was at Daytona
Continental, February 1965. In line with what had
happened in 1964 a 3.3 litre 275P2 version was also
available. Both models were used to gain the prototype
championships for Ferrari that year.

These Ferraris of David Piper are frequently difficult to identify, but this one seems to be chassis #0824.
The car behind is another of David Piper's cars, a Ferrari 250 LM, which is presumably #8165.
NB: The Ferrari factory called it the '250 LM', though it should strictly speaking be a '275 LM', having a V12 engine of 3.3 litres. It got the 250 LM label because the first to be produced had a 3 litre engine.

Friday's Ferrari

This is one of David Piper's cars at the Silverstone Historic Festival meeting in August 2001.
It's a 1964 Ferrari 330P2, serial number 0836 and another four of David Piper's Ferraris are behind the 330P2. This Wikipedia article tells you about the Ferrari P series of sports prototype racing cars.

Friday's Ferrari

This is one of David Piper's cars again, photographed at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994.
It's a 1964 Ferrari 365P and it appears to be one of the two cars which David Piper has with Chassis number 0824. That's David Piper, second from the left.

Friday's Ferrari

Here are a couple of photographs of one of David Piper's confusing Ferraris, this time at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994.
It's shown in the programme of the event as a Ferrari 365 P1 entered by David Piper in the 10 lap Motor Sport Pre-'70 Le Mans Car Race for the John Woolfe Trophy. A driver change during the race was mandatory, but both drivers for this car as shown in the programme as 'TBN' (To Be Nominated). David Piper owned two cars with the serial number 0824 - as www.barchetta.cc explains:
David Piper owns two P1 with the chassis number 0824. One has a new frame (built in 90) and one uses the original frame (finished in 98).
- and it looks like this is the one with the new frame.
NB: The Ferrari 365 P1 is a 1964 model, but the 'H' at the end of the registration number 'UKT 66H' indicates a car first registered between 1 Aug 1969 and 31 July 1970.

Friday's Ferrari

This car appeared in the Visage Pre '72 Le Mans Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1996, entered by David Piper and driven by the singer Chris Rea. It's shown in the programme as a 1965 Ferrari P1 with an engine capacity of 3998cc. I've looked for this car in www.barchetta.cc and it looks as if it's a 365 P2, serial number 0824, about which there's a note saying: 'David Piper owns two P1 with the chassis number 0824. One has a new frame (built in 90) and one uses the original frame (finished in 98)'

Friday's Ferrari

In April last year I posted photographs of some of David Piper's Ferraris at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in 2001. David Piper and his cars have been regular competitors in historic motor racing and below are photographs of some more of his cars, plus one from Nick Mason's Ten Tenths company at the 1999 Coys meeting.

Car number 7 is Nick Mason's 1970 Ferrari 512S (1026), number 81 is David Piper's 1964 Ferrari 275LM (8165) and number 8 is David Piper's 1969 Lola T70 MkIIIB

Friday's Ferrari

Today's photograph is of one of David Piper's cars, 1964 Ferrari 275LM, serial number 8165, at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994.
It's lining up in the paddock ready to take part in a practice session for the Pre-1970 Le Mans Car race and is being driven by the singer Chris Rea, who is of Italian extraction and has a well-known passion for Ferrari racing cars.

Friday's Ferrari

At the Silverstone Historic meetings I went to in the 1990s and early 2000s David Piper was usually present with a few of his stable of Ferraris. The photographs below show the cars he took along to the Historic Festival meeting of 2001.

1967 Ferrari 330P4, serial number 0822

1964 Ferrari 330P2, serial number 0836

1964 Ferrari 365P, serial number 0824

1967 Ferrari Dino 246S

1964 Ferrari 275LM, serial number 8165

The photograph below, which I took at the 1965 Tourist Trophy race at Oulton Park, is presumably of the same car, although at that time it was labelled a 250LM. The Wikipedia entry for Ferrari says:
'Only the very early LM's were true 250 models, with all the rest made as 3300cc models and as such should have been named 275 LM (the early cars were also converted to the 3300cc engine).'

Correction: The car in the 1965 Tourist Trophy race in 1965 was 5897, now owned by Englebert Stieger.
