Friday's Ferrari

This is one of the cars that took part in the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998.

It’s the 1970 4,993cc V12 Ferrari 512 S of Brandon Wang that was driven in that race by Gary Pearson. Twenty five examples of the Ferrari 512 were produced, allowing it to be homologated into the FIA's Group 5 Sports Car Category, and this car is chassis 1016. It was developed to challenge the Porsche 917 in the International Championship for Makes but won only one race in the 10 round Championship (Ignazio Giunti/Nino Vacarella/Mario Andretti at Sebring in 1970), although the Ferrari team picked up two second and four third places to finish that season in second place to Porsche.

 This car took part in the Italian Historic Car Cup race at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.

I've shown photographs of this car previously in the hands of two previous owners, on 16 May 2014 at Silverstone in 1998 when owned by Brandon Wang, and on 12 April 2013 at Donington Park in 2003 when owned by Olivier Cazalieres.

Friday's Ferrari

In April last year I posted photographs of some of David Piper's Ferraris at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in 2001. David Piper and his cars have been regular competitors in historic motor racing and below are photographs of some more of his cars, plus one from Nick Mason's Ten Tenths company at the 1999 Coys meeting.

Car number 7 is Nick Mason's 1970 Ferrari 512S (1026), number 81 is David Piper's 1964 Ferrari 275LM (8165) and number 8 is David Piper's 1969 Lola T70 MkIIIB

Friday's Ferrari

This car seen at Donington Park in June 2003 is a 1970 Ferrari 512 S driven by Frenchman Olivier Cazalieres. It's pictured in the pit lane going for a practice run at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Donington Park.

This car, pictured in the pit garage at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1996, is a 1970 Ferrari 512S entered by Ten Tenths Ltd and driven in the Visage Pre '72 Le Mans Car Race by Simon de Latour. This 5 litre V12 engined sports car was developed to challenge the Porsche 917 in the International Championship for Makes. Ferrari won only one race in the 10 round Championship (at Sebring), but picked up two second and four third places to finish the season in second place to Porsche.

It looks as if this is the car that was rebuilt from the remains of serial number 1026.
