Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the RAC International Tourist Trophy race at Oulton Park in May 1965.

It’s Mike Salmon in the John Danway Racing’s 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO approaching Lodge Corner. The car is chassis 4399GT and it was rebodied in the 1964 style by Scaglietti  at the end of 1963. It finished the race in 12^th position on aggregate over two heats.

1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe

I took this photograph of a car approaching the Knickerbrook corner at Oulton Park during the RAC International Tourist Trophy Race in May 1965.

It's Jack Sears driving the Alan Mann Racing Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe and he ended the race in seventh place. The race was run in two two-hour long heats with the winner being the car that covered the greatest overall distance. It was won by Denny Hulme in a Brabham BT8, having covered 138 laps, 69 laps in each of the heats. Jack Sears managed 61 laps in the first heat and 66 in the second for a total of 127 laps.

1965 Elva Mk VIII BMW

I took this photograph in the paddock at Oulton Park at the Tourist Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in 1965.

It was listed in the programme of the event as an Elva BMW entered by Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd and was driven by Chris Amon. The race was run in two heats each of 2 hours duration and the winner would be the car that covered the greatest distance in total. The winner was Denny Hulme in a Brabham BT8, completing 138 laps, but Chris Amon's  Elva BMW dropped out of the first heat with overheating after just over 1½ hours and retired after just a few minutes in the second heat with a broken throttle linkage.

Friday's Ferrari

I took this photograph at the RAC Tourist Trophy Race at Oulton Park in May 1965.

It's David Piper in his 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, which should strictly be called a 275 LM because it has the larger 3.3 litre engine instead of the 3 litre engine of the 250LM. The car is chassis number 5897 and it finished in third place in the race which was won by Denny Hulme in a Brabham BT8.

1965 Lotus 30

I took this photo of Jim Clark in his Lotus 30 on the approach to Lodge Corner in the early stages of the RAC Tourist Trophy Race at Oulton Park in May 1965.

The race was scheduled to be run in two parts, each part lasting for 2 hours with the winner decided by the aggregate of the two parts. The Lotus 30 was Colin Chapman's first attempt to build a larger displacement car and usually had a 4.7 litre Ford V8 engine, though the programme of this event gives the capacity as 5.3 litres. Jim Clark finished the first part in a lowly 16th place and retired just over halfway through the second part with transmission problems.

1965 Lola T70 Traco

I took this photograph in the paddock at Oulton Park before the start of the  RAC International Tourist Trophy Race in May 1965.

It's the 1965 Lola T70 of John Surtees who set the fastest lap in practice but retired with a steering problem after 19 laps of the first part of the race which was scheduled to be run in two parts, each part lasting for 2 hours. The car had a 5.3 litre Chevrolet V8 engine prepared by Traco.

1965 McLaren Elva Oldsmobile M1A

I took this photograph in the paddock at Oulton Park at the Tourist Trophy meeting at Oulton Park in 1965.

It was listed in the programme of the event as a McLaren Elva Oldsmobile M1A and was driven in the race by Bruce McLaren. The race was run in two heats each of 2 hours duration and the winner would be the car that covered the greatest distance in total. The winner was Denny Hulme in a Brabham BT8, completing 138 laps, but the 4½ litre Oldsmobile engine in Bruce Mclaren's car developed an oil leak in both of the heats and only managed a total of 30 laps.

1965 RAC Tourist Trophy

I took this photograph at Lodge Corner on the first lap of the RAC Tourist Trophy race at Oulton Park in May 1965.

Leading is John Surtees in the Team Surtees Lola-Chevrolet T70 followed by the McLaren Elva-Oldsmobile M1A of Bruce McLaren and the Lotus Ford 30 of Jim Clark. None of these cars finished the race - John Surtees dropped out after 13 laps, Bruce McLaren after 30 laps and Jim Clark managed 102 laps before retiring. Denny Hulme won the race in Sidney Taylor Racing's Brabham-Climax BT8, completing 138 laps in the 4 hour long race.
