Friday's Ferrari

This is a photograph that I took at Luffield Corner during the HGPCA Sports Car Race at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.

The yellow car is the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC of David Cottingham which has a twin overhead camshaft 4-cylinder inline 1,984cc engine derived from the 1953 Formula 2 unit designed by Aurelio Lampredi and a body designed and built by Scaglietti. The 500TRC was an updated version of the 500TR, the first to have the 'Testa Rossa' red camshaft covers, modified to comply with the 1957 Appendix C Regulations, and it was a 'customer' car, never being raced by Scuderia Ferrari. David Cottingham's car is chassis #0682MDTR that was first owned by Ecurie Nationale Belge (also known as Equipe National Belge) which was formed by a merger of Ecurie Belge and Ecurie Francorchamps. It finished in seventh place in the 1957 Le Mans 24 hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, winning the 2 litre class. The green car at the side of the Ferrari is a 1957 Lotus Eleven, probably that of Carol Spagg, while behind are the red 1954 Austin Healey 100M of Bill Clegg and the 1952 Jaguar C-Type of Hugh Taylor.

This photograph was taken at McLean's Corner during the 1950s Drum-Braked Sports Racing Cars race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2005.

It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #682MDTR which is powered by a 1,984cc twin overhead camshaft 4-cylinder inline engine derived from the one used in the Formula 2 cars of 1952/53. The Ferrari 500 TR of 1956 was the first Ferrari to be labelled 'Testa Rossa', which refers to the red colour of the two camshaft covers, and the 500 TRC was the customer version of that car. Following the Ferrari is the 1959 Elva Mk 5 of David Brock-Jest and further back is Albert Otten's 1952 Allard J2.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car I've featured several times previously, and this photograph was taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995.

It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, chassis #0682MDTR, with the Lampredi designed 4-cylinder inline 2-litre engine and a Scaglietti body. The car was originally campaigned by Jacques Swaters' Ecurie National Belge team with whom it competed at the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, finishing in 9th place overall and winning the 2-litre class.

I took this photograph at the HGPCA's Donington International Historic Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park in May 2004.

It's David Cottingham's 2-litre 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, which I have featured several times previously. The car immediately behind it is Christopher Keen's 1954 Kurtis 500, and the car on the trailer in the background is the Austin Healey 3000 MkI that Chris Clarkson and Ted Williams shared in the Gentleman Drivers GT and Sports Endurance Race.

Here's a car that took part in the Champagne Charles Heidsieck Sports Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.

It's David Cottingham's 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, originally campaigned by Ecurie Nationale Belge and had the four-cylinder 2 litre Lampredi designed engine. Behind the Ferrari is Willie Tuckett's 1955 Jaguar D-type, and number 32 on the left is Simon Draper's 1955 Bristol 450S.

This is a car that appears regularly at historic car meetings in the hands of the owner David Cottingham and is here seen at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in 1993.

It's a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC, with a 2 litre 4-cylinder engine, that was conceived as a customer car and never raced by the works. The serial number is 0682MDTR. Behind it is the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France, serial number 0911GT, then owned by Reza Rashidian.

Today's car was photographed at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993.

Although shown in the programme of the meeting as a 1956 car, according to www.barchetta.cc it's a 1957 Ferrari 500TRC with Scaglietti bodywork. It was first owned by Ecurie Nationale Belge (also known as Equipe National Belge) which was formed by a merger of Ecurie Belge and Ecurie Francorchamps. It finished in seventh place in the 1957 Le Mans 24 hour race in the hands of Lucien Bianchi and Georges Harris, winning the 2 litre class. The serial number of the car is 0682MDTR and it was driven at this meeting by the owner David Cottingham.

Friday's Ferrari

This is the 1956 Ferrari 410S of Brazilian Carlos Monteverde seen at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998. You can read here what the official Ferrari website says about the 410S and this site gives you the history of this particular car which is serial number 0596CM.

Also in this photograph you can see five more Ferraris, (from the left) two 365 Daytona GTB/4s (15667 & 15681), a 500 TRC (0682MDTR), an 860 Monza (0604M) and a 250 GTO (4153GT).

Friday's Ferrari

There are actually four Ferraris seen in this photograph taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 2001. The nearest car is a 1954 Ferrari 750 Monza (0568M) and next to that is a yellow 250 Testa Rossa of 1957 (0738TR). Car number 37 is a 1955 Maserati 300S, beyond that is a red Ferrari 166MM Barchetta (0040M) from 1950 and then a yellow 1956 Ferrari 500TR (0682MDTR). The red coupe beyond that is, I think, an AC Cobra.

The 750 Monza, which was introduced in 1954, was a 3 litre version of the 2 litre Mondial and was named 'Monza' after winning its first race at that circuit in the hands of Mike Hawthorn and Umberto Maglioli. The bodywork for cars was originally designed by Pinin Farina, but it is the later cars with Scaglietti designed bodies which are perhaps better known. This particular car spent most of its life in Finland, hence the Finnish flag on the headrest.

This is a photograph taken at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992. It shows a group of cars lining up to take to the track for a sports car race and the main car featured is a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa of 1957, serial number 0742TR. There are two other Ferraris in the line-up, a 1957 500TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, (number 42, the yellow car) and a 250MM of 1953, serial number 0390MM, (number 33, the black car). The two other cars shown are a 1957 Jaguar D-type behind the Testa Rossa, and a 1960 Maserati T61 behind the 250MM.

Friday's Ferrari

Today's car is a 1956 Ferrari 500TRC, serial number 0682MDTR, an improved version of the 500TR which was introduced in 1954 as a replacement for the 500 Mondial and was the first Ferrari to carry the 'Testa Rossa' name. This photo was taken at the 2005 See Red meeting at Donington Park.
