1935 Brough Superior

This car was on the stand of the Railton Owners Club at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Centre in Manchester in August 1994.

It's a 1935 Brough Superior which is powered by a 4,163cc 8-cylinder inline Hudson engine. A note in the brochure of the event reads as follows:

'The Hudson is an important car to R.O.C. members as the chassis and engine form the basis of all 8 and 6 cylinder Railtons. For many years only Hudsons which were contemporary to the Railton (1933-1950) were admitted to the club. but we have recently extended this rule to include all Hudsons from 1909 to 1956 (the years of production). As a result of this we now have a number of vintage Hudsons and quite a few of the later Hornets attended our meetings. The Nottingham built Brough Superior has always been very acceptable to us, as apart from the excitingly different coachwork, it shares the same Hudson engine as the Railton. Vehicles on display will include a Railton Light Sports Tourer, a Brough Superior "Dual-Purpose" Tourer and a Hudson Terraplane Sedan. All three cars were built in 1935, but despite their different appearances it should be remembered that they all have the same engine and chassis (although the Hudson is a six whilst the other two are eights).'

1935 Hudson Terraplane

This car was on the stand of the Railton Owners Club at the Northern Classic Car Show in the G-Mex Centre, Manchester in August 1994.

It's a 1935 Hudson Terraplane, built by the Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan. The Terraplane chassis and engine were also used on the British Railton car built by the Fairmile Engineering Company in Cobham, Surrey, hence the appearance of this car on the stand of the Railton Owners Club.

1935 Railton 8

This was one of the exhibits at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Centre, Manchester in August 1993.

It's a 1935 Railton 8, and was on the stand of the Railton Owners Club. It's not mentioned in the brochure of the event which says this about the Club:

'We are celebrating the 60th birthday of the Railton which first appeared in 1933 and with its effortless top-gear performance and superb acceleration was hailed as being '10 Years Ahead Of Its Time'. Reid Railton, who gave his name to the car, was best known for designing the Napier Railton, which holds the Brooklands track record, and the Railton Mobile Special, which broke the world Land Speed Record in 1938 and again in 1947 being the first car to actually exceed 400 mph.'

The Railton 8 was produced between 1933 and 1940 and has an 8-cylinder 4,168cc engine, and when AWX 118 was shown at the 1986 Northern Classic Car Show the following note appeared in the Show's brochure:

'The Railton was a successful combination of American power and English coachwork, It was based on the 8 cylinder Hudson chassis and the example shown is fitted with the popular Fairmile drophead coupe body.'

Hudson Big 6

This car was on the Railton Owners Club's stand at the Northern Classic Car Show at the G-Mex Arena, Manchester in August 1992.

It's a 1935 Hudson Big 6 Sedan with a 6-cylinder inline engine of 3,474cc. The Big 6 was only produced in 1935, and as well as the four-door sedan was also available as a 2-door coupe and 2-door cabriolet.

Railton

This photograph was taken at the Northern Classic Car Show in the Belle Vue Exhibition Halls in Manchester in September 1986.

It's on the Railton Owners Club's stand and the brochure of the event said this about the car:

The Railton Straight Eight was produced between 1933 and 1940 - this is a 1935 car and has a 4,168cc engine.

Essex Terraplane

This car was on the Railton Owners Club stand at the Northern Classic Car show at the G-Mex exhibition centre in August 1992.

It's a 1932 Essex Terraplane, built by the Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit, Michigan. From 1934 the car was simply called a 'Terraplane'. The Terraplane chassis and engine were also used on the British Railton car built by the Fairmile Engineering Company in Cobham, Surrey, hence the appearance of this Essex car (and also a Hudson) on the stand of the Railton Owners Club.
