Cooper T45/51

This car took part in the Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1998.

It's the 1958 Cooper T45/51 of Rod Jolley which has a 4-cylinder inline 2,495cc Coventry Climax FPF engine. It is a 1958 T45 model uprated to the specifications of the 1959 T51, and is chassis #F2-23A-58.

1958 Lister Monza Jaguar

This car took part in the Flockhart Trophy Race at Donington Park at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting in June 2008.

It's the 1958 Lister MonzaJaguar of Rod Jolley with a 6-cylinder inline 3,781cc Jaguar engine that was built for Ecurie Ecosse to run in the Race of Two Worlds at Monza. The Race of Two Worlds was conceived as an annual exhibition event to be run on the banked oval at Monza and contested by two teams of cars from the USA (USAC cars as in the Indianapolis 500 race) and from Europe (F1 World Championship cars). Because of safety concerns and costs (and a lack of enthusiasm amongst the European F1 teams) the event only lasted for two years, 1957 and 1958, being won by the American cars on both occasions. Ecurie Ecosse entered a team of three Jaguar D-types in the 1957 race, and in 1958 two Jaguar D-types and this single seat Lister Jaguar built especially for the race and consequently known as the Lister Jaguar Monzanapolis. The building was completed in the paddock at Monza leaving insufficient time to paint the aluminium body of the car before the race, but it was later painted Ecurie Ecosse blue. It was subsequently  returned to the original unpainted finish.

Lister Jaguar Monza

This car competed in the VSCC Flockhart Trophy Race at the Vintage Sports Car Club's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2006.

It's the 1958 Lister Jaguar Monza of Rod Jolley, a car that was created to run in the second Race of Two Worlds in 1958 which was contested by a team of American Indianapolis cars against a motley collection of European cars on the banked oval track at Monza. At the 1957 event Ecurie Ecosse had entered a team of D-Type Jaguars for the race but they fared no better than the other European cars, so for the 1958 race the team built a single seater car with a Lister chassis and a 3.8 litre Jaguar engine. It was built at such short notice that the work was actually completed in the paddock at Monza, leaving no time for it to be painted so it ran in the race with the bare metal finish as seen above, but proved to be slower than the Ecurie Ecosse D-Type Jaguars that also ran in the race. The car ran for a time in historic races in the 1990s painted in the Ecurie Ecosse blue livery, but is now back in its original bare metal finish. Incidentally, to suit the American Indianapolis cars both the 1957 and 1958 races were run anti-clockwise round the Monza track instead of the clockwise direction in which races there were usually run.

Cooper T45/51

This car took part in the HGPCA Pre '66 Grand Prix Cars race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2003.

It's the 1958 Cooper T45/51 of Rod Jolley and is pictured during the race at Lodge Corner. The car has a 4-cylinder inline 2,495cc Coventry Climax FPF engine and is a 1958 T45 model uprated to the specifications of the 1959 T51, and is chassis #F2-23A-58.

Giron Alvis

I took this photograph in the paddock at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Oulton Park in June 1984.

It's Rod Jolley's Giron Alvis, described in the programme of the event as a 1932/37 car with a supercharged 3,500cc engine. I can't find out much about this car, but I suspect it may be a 1932 Speed 20 with the six-cylinder inline 3,571cc engine from a 1937 Speed 25. The only reference to it in the programme notes reads:

'The silver Giron-Alvis is always an unforgettable sight, and it can go very fast, if not always for long.'

Lister Jaguar Monza

This car competed in the Ron Flockhart Memorial Trophy Race at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2004.

It's the Lister Jaguar Monza of Rod Jolley, a car that was built in 1958 to compete in the Race of Two Worlds which pitted American Indianapolis cars against European cars on Monza's banked oval track. The race had been held in 1957 when the European cars, including Ecurie Ecosse D-Type Jaguars were soundly beaten so the following year Ecurie Ecosse built this single seater car based on a Lister chassis with a 3.8 litre Jaguar engine. The race was still dominated by the American team though. Construction of the Lister Jaguar was actually completed in the paddock at Monza and it ran in the unpainted finish seen here. For a time in the 1990s though it was painted in Ecurie Ecosse blue, and on 30 April 2016 I showed a photograph of the car as it appeared at Silverstone in 1999.

The Flockhart Trophy Race

I took this photograph at Redgate corner on the first lap of the Flockhart Trophy Race at Donington Park at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting in June 2008.

Leading is Philip Walker in his 1959 2½ litre Lotus 16 from the 1957 2 litre Cooper T43 of Andrew Smith. Behind them is the 1958 3.8 litre Lister Jaguar Monza of Rod Jolley, and at the rear is Hubert Fabri's 1957 3 litre Aston Martin DBR4 just behind Ian Nuthall's 1952 2 litre Alta F2.
