1976 March 761

This is a photograph that I took in the paddock at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010, and it's a car that competed in the Grand Prix Masters F1 Cars 1955-1985 race.

It's Mark Higson's 1976 March 761, a car that was designed by Robin Herd and powered by the 2,993cc V8 Ford Cosworth DFV engine. It competed in the 1976 and 1977 seasons, but the only notable result was Ronnie Peterson's victory in the 1976 Italian Grand Prix. Any drivers following this car must have been comforted by the message on the rear spoiler.

 

March 761

This photograph was taken at Luffield Corner during the Grand Prix Masters race at the Silverstone Historic Tribute meeting in June 2004.

Peter Williams in the blue and yellow 1976 March 761 is leading the 1976 Penske PC3 of Frank Sytner with, in the background, Lorina McLoughlin in a 1974 McLaren M23. All three cars are powered by the 2,993cc V8 Cosworth DFV engine. According to the programme of the event the March is chassis #761/5 which didn't actually take part in any races until the 1977 season. The Penske is chassis #PC3/02, driven in period by several drivers including John Watson and Derek Bell, and the McLaren is chassis #M23/6, which competed in the 1974, 1975 and 1976 seasons, being driven by Denny Hulme, Jochen Mass and James Hunt, amongst others.
