1952 HWM F2

This was one of the competitors in the HGPCA Pre '60 GP Car Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in August 1999.

It's Kirk Rylands' HWM, described in the programme of the event as a 1957 car with an engine capacity of 3,442cc (the car had been given a Jaguar engine, hence the '1957'). HWM competed in Formula 2 races from 1950 to 1953, and in the last two of those years the World Championship for Drivers was run under Formula 2 rules. By 1952 the cars had become uncompetitive and a revised model, as pictured, was introduced, but this car was also largely outclassed by the opposition. The best result they achieved was probably when Paul Frère and Peter Collins finished in second and third places to Emmanuel de Graffenried's Maserati A6GCM in the ADAC Eifelrennen race at the Nürburgring in 1953.

1952/57 HWM Jaguar

This car took part in the HGPCA Pre '65 Grand Prix Car Race at the Christie's International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1992.

It's the HWM Jaguar of Kirk Rylands, a 1952 HWM Formula 2 car with a 1957 6-cylinder inline 3,442cc Jaguar XK6 engine. 

HWM

This car took part in the Raymond Mays Trophy race for Pre 1961 Grand Prix Cars at the Silverstone Historic Festival meeting in August 2001.

It's the 1951 HWM of Michael Harting, owner of the HMW company formed in 1950 by John Heath and George Abecassis. The cars raced as Formula 2 cars in 1950 and 1951, and when the World Championship was run to Formula 2 rules in 1952 and 1953 they competed in those races too, but were becoming more and more outclassed by the end of the 1953 season. It was the car in which the likes of Stirling Moss and Pete Collins gained much of their early racing experience. On 31 December 2012 I showed photographs of this car taken at Donington Park in May of 2001.

Crowded Paddock

This is a photograph I took in the paddock at the SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2007.

There's a preponderance of British Racing Green, and even the blue car nearest the camera is a British car - it's the 1955 Cooper T39 Bobtail of Adrian van der Kroft that I featured on 11 July 2016. Adrian van der Kroft is also the owner of car number 38, a 1952 HWM F2 car fitted with a Jaguar engine. There are 5 Cooper Bristols - those of David White, Patrick Walker, Nigel Bancroft and Geoffrey O'Connell lined up together at the rear, and the one with the red nose is Paul Grant's. Number 49 is the 1954 HWM Jaguar of Michael Steele, 27 is Ian Nuthall's 1952 Alta F2, and numbers 10 and 7 are Nick Wigley's 1954 Connaught B type and 1959 Cooper T51 respectively.
