HWM

This car took part in the 10-Lap Race for Pre-1961 Racing Cars at the VSCC's Richard Seaman Trophy Vintage Car Races meeting at Oulton Park in August 1992.

It's Kirk Rylands' HWM, described in the programme of the event as a 1952/57 car with an engine capacity of 3,442cc (the car had been given a Jaguar engine, hence the '52/57'). HWM competed in Formula 2 races from 1950 to 1953, and in the last two of those years the World Championship for Drivers was run under Formula 2 rules. I showed photographs of one of the 1951 cars on 31 December 2012 and 4 June 2017. By 1952 the cars had become uncompetitive and a revised model, as pictured, was introduced, but this car was also largely outclassed by the opposition. The best result they achieved was probably when Paul Frère and Peter Collins finished in second and third places to Emmanuel de Graffenried's Maserati A6GCM in the ADAC Eifelrennen race at the Nürburgring in 1953.

HWM

This car took part in the Raymond Mays Trophy race for Pre 1961 Grand Prix Cars at the Silverstone Historic Festival meeting in August 2001.

It's the 1951 HWM of Michael Harting, owner of the HMW company formed in 1950 by John Heath and George Abecassis. The cars raced as Formula 2 cars in 1950 and 1951, and when the World Championship was run to Formula 2 rules in 1952 and 1953 they competed in those races too, but were becoming more and more outclassed by the end of the 1953 season. It was the car in which the likes of Stirling Moss and Pete Collins gained much of their early racing experience. On 31 December 2012 I showed photographs of this car taken at Donington Park in May of 2001.

Hersham and Walton Motors (HWM)

HWM was a racing team owned by George Abecassis and John Heath who ran a team of Formula 2 cars between 1950 and 1952, competing in several Grand Prix races. It was the car which introduced Stirling Moss to Grand Prix racing, finishing 8th in the 1951 Swiss Grand Prix and retiring from the same event in 1952. The car is pictured here at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Donington Park in May 2001. The race programme says this about the car:

'......HWM lead the way with their Alta powered cars and it is pleasing to see a car (4) entered by Mike Harting who now runs HW Motors the original manufacturer. The original owners, John Heath and George Abecassis ran a team, which toured the Continent, living off starting money.
