This is a photograph taken on practice day for the British Grand Prix at Aintree in July 1957.
It's the Maserati 250F (#2527) driven in the race by Harry Schell, who qualified in seventh place on the grid but retired on lap 39 with a broken water pump. I showed a photograph on 3 May 2016 of how this car looked in July 2000.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteTerrific website, by the way.
You have been tricked. This is chassis 2529. Fangio tested 2527 in practice with number 2 but decided on 2529 for the race, so the 2 was moved to 2529.
Cheers,

Your picture is 2529 in practice. If you web search Schell 250F photos from the British GP, you will see that Schell's race #6 is in a different location, as is the white background.
Note in this picture of 2529, the white background is far forward and the top end on the 6 lands on the Maserati emblem.
Well spotted - it looks as if you're correct. I usually use two sources to find out the chassis numbers, but in this case it looks as if I've only checked on one - and it's probably the most unreliable of the two. The second one agrees with you.
DeleteEmail me at barriehobkirk@shaw.ca and I'll send you pictures of both Schell 2529 (#6)pictured, then 2527 (#6) and Fangio in 2527 (#2) and then 2529 (#2).
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Barrie
