70s Road Sports

I took this photograph during the 70s Road Sports race at the Gold Cup meeting at Oulton Park in August 2017.

Leading is Neil Brown in a 1977 Lotus Eclat followed by Mark Oldfield in a 1978 Lancia Monte Carlo. The third car is Richard Attwood's 1978 Porsche 928 then the 1967 MGB Roadster of Peter Bowyer.

1964 BRM P261

This is one of the competitors in the Pre 1966 Grand Prix and Tasman Cars race at the Silverstone Historic Festival meeting in August 2001.

It's the 2 litre 1964 BRM P261 of Richard Attwood which is Chassis #2617 and was driven by Jackie Stewart in the 1965 season with a 1½ litre V8 P56 engine then driven by Jackie Stewart and Richard Attwood with a 2 litre engine in the Tasman Series in early 1966. The programme of this Silverstone event says about the BRM P261:

'The wailing 2-litre V8-engined BRM P261s of the evergreen Richard Attwood (his car was built about the remains of Current BRDC chairman Jackie Stewart's '66 Belgian Grand Prix wreck) and Germany's Thomas Bscher may be able to get the better of the Brabham Contingent led by Spencer Flack (BT7) and old pals John Harper and John Beasley in BT4s.'

Friday's Ferrari

This car took part in the one hour long Italian Historic Car Cup at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.

It's the 1966 Ferrari Dino 206S of Harry Leventis, chassis #0834 and he shared the driving in the race with Richard Attwood. The car started off in 1965 as a Dino 166S, with a 1,593cc V6 engine, but later that year was fitted with a 1,987cc V6 engine, and that and further alterations gave it the same configuration as the Dino 206S. 

BRM P126

The Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1993 included a display of cars celebrating British Racing Green, and this is one of the cars included in that display.

It's a 1968 BRM P126, a car that was raced by BRM in the 1968 F1 season and had a 2,998cc V12 engine. Richard Attwood was one of the BRM team drivers that season, and he drove the car in the track display at this Silverstone meeting.

BRM P261

This was one of the cars competing in the HGPCA Pre-1966 GP Cars Race at the VSCC's SeeRed meeting at Donington Park in September 2006.

It's the 1,498cc V8 1964 BRM P261 of Richard Attwood. On 10 May 2017 I showed a photograph of two of these cars at Silverstone in 1999, one of which was chassis P261/5. The madasafish.com website gives details of all the P261 cars, and this one appears to be chassis P261/7.

BRM P261

These cars took part in the Maserati UK Race for Pre-1966 Grand Prix & Tasman Cars at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1999.

They're the BRM P261s of Paul Alexander (no. 14) and Bruce McCaw (no. 46) - the latter being driven in the race by Richard Attwood. The programme of the event said this about Paul Alexander's car:

Few models beyond the 1950s - let alone individual cars - enjoyed Grand Prix careers spanning several seasons, but BRM P261-5 has the distinction of having competed at the highest level from 1964-'68, in both 1500cc and three-litre Formula 1 guises.

One of three raced by Graham Hill in 1964, it excelled on the road circuits, finishing second in the French Grand Prix at Rouen and fifth in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. A back-up car in 1965, it contested the final 1500cc Grand Prix  in Mexico with Jackie Stewart.

Privateer Bernard White's Team Chamaco Collect fitted it with a two-litre BRM 'Tasman' V8 for 1966, Vic Wilson taking it to fourth in the non-championship Syracuse Grand Prix. By Monaco, Bob Bondurant was in, the American finishing fourth and last in a race of attrition.

Innes Ireland placed fourth in the Oulton Park Gold Cup, and went on to win the US and Mexican GPs. David Hobbs ran it in the '67 British and Canadian GPs, and was back in '68 with a three-litre V12 engine installed. Sixth in Silverstone's International Trophy, Hobbs took a Honda drive for the Italian GP, where Frank Gardner gave 261-5 its last outing, but failed to qualify.

Superbly rebuilt to its two-litre specification by Hall & Fowler, 261-5 is finally winning races, 35 years on, with Paul Alexander.

Friday's Ferrari

This is a car that took part in the Italian Historic Car Cup race at the Silverstone Classic meeting in July 2010.

It's the 1966 Ferrari Dino 206S of Harry Leventis, chassis #0834. According to the programme of the event Harry Leventis was due to share the driving in this race with Richard Attwood, but the barchetta.cc record says that Nick Leventis drove the car. On 7 September 2012 I showed a photograph of this car at the 2004 SeeRed meeting at Donington Park.
