Locomotive 1505 Ariadne

This is a photograph that I took at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester in August 1990.

It is one of the British Rail Class 77 Co-Co electric locomotives built at the British Rail Gorton Locomotive Works in the early 1950s for use over the Woodhead Line between Manchester and Sheffield. In 1969 all the Class 77 locomotives were sold to the Dutch national railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen, where they became NS 1500 Class and renumbered as such. They were withdrawn in 1985 and 1505, originally 27001 and named Ariadne, was preserved at the Manchester Science and Industry Museum.

1912 Belsize 10hp

I took this photograph on a visit to the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry in April 1986.

It's a 1912 Belsize 10hp and was built by Belsize Motors Ltd of Clayton, Manchester. The Belsize Company started life in France under the name Marshall’s and took the name Belsize when they took over the Belsize works formerly used by the Manchester Bicycle Company.

1935 Crossley Regis Six

I took this photograph at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry in April 1986.

It's a 1935 Crossley Regis Six with what the DVLA record says is a 1,651cc engine. Both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder versions of the Crossley Regis were built, approximately 1,050 in total, between 1935 and 1937. The 4-cylinder model had a 1,122cc MC type engine and the 6-cylinder either a 1,476cc JM type or a 1,640cc JMC type unit. This particular car is a 6-cylinder model, chassis 100762, engine number JM374 and body number RE422. The Crossley car was manufactured in Manchester, the main site being in Napier Street, later named Crossley Street, Gorton.
