1989 Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO

This is one of the cars that Audi took along to the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in May 2001, together with the Auto Union C-Type and D-Type pre-war Grand Prix cars. The car is seen at Coppice Corner during one of the demonstration runs.

It's the 1989 Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO that took part in the North American IMSA GTO Championship in that year and was driven by Hurley Haywood, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Scott Goodyear and Walter Röhrl.

2000 Audi R8

May 2001 marked the first appearance of the Auto Union C-type and D-type Grand Prix cars at Donington Park since the late 1930s when Audi brought an Auto Union C-Type and a D-Type to the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting. They brought several other cars and motorcycles that day, including the one shown below.

This is the 2000 Audi R8, developed from the previous year's R8R and powered by the same 3.6 litre V8 engine. The R8 competed in the Le Mans 24 Hour race six times, from 2000 to 2005, winning on 5 occasions and being beaten only in 2003 - by the Bentley Speed 8.

1926 NSU 6/60

This is one of several vehicles, including two Auto Union Grand Prix cars, that Audi took to the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in May 2001.

It's a 1926 NSU 6/60 that was a successful competitor in the 1½ litre class of racing in the 1920s. It has a 60 bhp 6-cylinder inline 1,482cc supercharged engine, and its best result was when it took the first four places in the up to 1½ litre class at the 1926 German Grand Prix at the Avus circuit. Georg Klöbe finished in fifth place overall with Jakob Scholl in seventh place, Franz Islinger eighth, and Josef Müller in tenth place. This is the only one of those cars that has survived, and this photograph was taken on the stretch between the Old Hairpin and McLean's Corner.

Audi Quattro

NSU Spider

I've shown photographs previously of the pre-war C-Type & D-Type Auto Unions and other vehicles that Audi took to the VSCC's Richard Seaman Memorial Trophies meeting at Donington Park in May 2001, and here's another car that was shown and demonstrated that day.

It's an NSU Spider, produced by NSU between 1964 and 1967, and the first production car to be powered by a rotary engine, first conceived by Felix Wankel. Wankel has now become the generic term for the rotary car engine. The Spider's engine had a capacity of 498cc, produced 54bhp and could reach almost 100mph. The photograph here was taken on the inside of Coppice Corner.

DKW Schnellaster

I took this photograph at the Richard Seaman Memorial Trophy meeting at Donington Park in May 2001 - the meeting where Audi brought along C-Type and D-Type Auto Union Grand Prix cars, together with various other cars and motorcycles produced by the Auto Union concern. This vehicle was parked next to the display area where these cars were on show, and it was presumably another of the vehicles brought by Audi.

It's a DKW Schnellaster, a vehicle produced by DKW Auto Union between 1949 and 1962 in Ingolstadt, to the north of Munich in Bavaria. The Auto Union factories were originally in Chemnitz and Zwickau in what became the Soviet controlled East Germany after the Second World War. Auto Union restarted operations at Ingolstadt in 1945 and eventually evolved into the Audi company.
