Friday's Ferrari

This is one of the cars that featured in a tribute to Ferrari at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997, taking part in a paddock display and track demonstration.

It's a 1949 Ferrari 166 chassis #011F that had been raced in the late 1940s and early 1950s in Argentina by Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán Gonzáles. It was powered by a 1,995cc V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo and was originally used in Formula 2 racing, but became eligible for World Championship races when they were contested by 2 litre cars in 1952 and 1953. The 'YPF' decal on the side of the car denotes the Argentinian state energy company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales.

Friday's Ferrari

Ferrari was the featured car at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1997 and this is one of the cars featured in the Ferrari display.

Friday's Ferrari

I've shown two photographs of this car previously, on 18 April 2012 and 30 Oct 2015 which were taken at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1994 when it was part of a display paying tribute to Juan Manuel Fangio.

It's a 1949 Ferrari 166 F2 car, Enzo Ferrari's first single seat racing car, and the chassis number is 011F. It is thought to be one of the cars that Fangio drove early in his career before he joined the Alfa Romeo F1 team and had been fully restored by Tony Merrick in the 4 years before this appearance. The blue and yellow car behind the 166 is Robs Lamplough's 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis number 3445GT.

Juan Manuel Fangio

The Coys International Historic Festival meeting of July 1994 at Silverstone featured a tribute to Juan Manuel Fangio and had a display of some of the cars with which he was associated. The photograph below shows three of the cars which are associated with his World Championship victories.

His first World Championship was won in 1951 in an Alfa Romeo and the car on the left is an Alfa Romeo 158 of 1950. Although he started 1954 driving a Maserati 250F, Mercedes Benz introduced their new car at the French Grand Prix and he won the Championship in that year and 1955 driving the W196 model, an example of which is on the right-hand side of the photograph. The car in the middle is a Maserati 250F which Fangio used in winning the 1957 Championship. He also won in 1956 driving a Lancia-Ferrari and at the time of this tribute there were none left in existence, although since then several of the earlier Lancia D50s and the Lancia-Ferrari have been recreated (or 'faked' as Denis Jenkinson would have said).

Also on display was this 1948 1.5 litre Ferrari 166, serial number 011F, thought to have been raced by Fangio in Argentina.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Fangio drive in the 1955 British Grand Prix at Aintree and the 1957 British Grand Prix, also at Aintree.
